Non-electric grass pitch
Spacious pitches
Large flat field with plenty of space between pitches
Views of the countryside

  • Peaceful rural site on a working farm a half-hour drive from Newcastle
  • Prudhoe 10 minutes’ drive; Whitley Bay 50 minutes
  • One-acre dog exercise field; less than one mile from a pub
Hoping to leave the car (and related headaches such as traffic woes, low-emission zones and parking fees) at home next time you go on holiday? Please consider booking at Bowler’s Hill Campsite. This simple Northumberland spot is within about two miles of two train stations (Stocksfield and Prudhoe), and it can also be reached by bus. Set on a working farm in a scenic rural location, this family-friendly site has spacious plots for tents in a flat and open field, with no restrictions on how big your pitch can be. It also welcomes your four-legged friends. Indeed, dogs have their very own one-acre exercise field where they can run up and down to their heart’s content. Those who can’t (or won’t) let go of the convenience of driving can reach Prudhoe in about 10 minutes by car. The peaceful site is also handily located to reach highlights like Newcastle (half an hour’s drive) and the Northumberland coast (one hour)… and be back in time to get the barbecue going for dinner. If you don’t fancy cooking after a long day of exploring, you can take advantage of the country pub, tea rooms and small shops within the local area (the pub, for example, is less than one mile from base).

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Large, basic site in a peaceful location. Clean facilities (2 portaloos and a shower) Free to pitch where you like.
Close to A69,
Great for visiting Hexham, Corbridge, Hadrians wall/forts and Newcastle (train station close by) and lots of great walks/ cycle routs around the area.
The exercise field for the dog is a great bonus!
Camp fires allowed.
Well maintained field.
Would highly recommend for people who like a back to basic, simple way of camping.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Easy to find, a nice big field with lots of space to pitch.

Disliked: No drinking water available. Although this is listed in the description I hadn't noticed it. I'd assumed we'd be able to get water to drink and cook with but there isn't any.

No shower on site, we were there in October though so maybe these are just hired for the summer season.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Sorry you missed the information regarding the drinking water. If you had contacted us we would have been happy to provide bottled water, as we have done for many guests.
We do have shower on site, all year around. A map of the site is included in the welcome pack sent to all guests before arrival and shows where the shower is located. Again, if there was any confusion we would have been happy to have helped with this.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Beautiful views and the peaceful environment certainly make this stay worth its value alone. Flexible check in/out times also advantageous after a long working day. Facilities were well presented and clean, owners made us feel welcome and advised us on good locations to eat and visit. Would certainly visit again.

Disliked: No drinking water is a downside but understand this isn’t an easy fix but is reflected in the price.

Non-electric grass motorhome pitch

Liked: It's a nice enough field, reasonably flat

Disliked: 2 portaloos, very basic, not clean. Shower very basic, just the one, and very dirty

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for the review. I am sorry you felt our facilities were not clean enough. We clean toilets and showers at least once a day, with checks more often. Unfortunately things can happen between these times, however we will always rectify these as soon as possible, especially if we are notified. It is difficult to put these things right for guests if they do not notify us until after leaving the site.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: It's a field

Disliked: lighting in shower not working

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for your review, we do not have any lighting in the shower as we do not have electricity on site as we are a basic, rural campsite. The shower can currently be used during hours of daylight and we are looking to provide alternative lighting sources in future.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: The scenery was beautiful. Level grass.

Disliked: We booked for two nights and left after one!! Arrived to an empty field. Tried to get Intouch with the owner as we weren’t sure if we were in right place but they wouldn’t answer there calls. The toilet was pretty grim with wet toilet paper, there was no fresh water on site and the shower was locked.
We had a few drinks and a laugh in one of our tents on the first night, woke up to a text and email stating we were too loud and if it continues we will be asked to leave immediately!! We were just talking with a phone playing some songs.

We noticed a hidden camera in the tree not one sign to say they were recording there guests we packed up and left.
We will not be using this camp site/field again

From the manager: Thank you for leaving your review, having already responded to you via email I wanted to respond on here too in order to give further clarity.
As stated in my email, I am sorry you felt unable to contact us but it seems you may have rand a wrong number. We checked our phone and had no missed calls or messages from you. However if you were struggling you could have tried to contact us via email by replying to our arrival information sent to you.
The portaloos were both fully cleaned, emptied and replenished with toilet rolls just before your arrival. As you were the only guests on site that night, and problems could only have been as a result of the actions of one of your party. In any case, we could have rectified this straight away had you informed us of the problem.
They were still clean at the point of carrying out our evening checks and no-one approached us with any issues whilst we were on site.
We clearly advertise on pitchup and state in our arrival information that the tap on site is not for drinking use, so this was shared with you well in advance of your arrival. We are always happy to provide guests with drinking water, free of charge, if it is requested.
The showers were not locked. They do not lock from outside, only from the inside, so are only locked if they are in use by a guest.
We courteously reminded you of our quiet time policy. Our site is a peaceful, rural campsite which guests visits in order to enjoy the relaxed, quiet atmosphere and location. Although there were no other guests on site when you stayed, we still have a duty to respect local residents and surrounding areas. We clearly state no noise after 10pm at night so have a duty to remind guests of this when music and voices can clearly be heard a distance away after 1.30am.
CCTV on site is for the security of our guests and site and signs are displayed on site. The cameras are directed at the site entrance in order to monitor movement to and from the site, not to film any guests.
We wish you all the best for future in finding a campsite that is better suited to your needs.
