  • Remote site set on the edge of Northumberland National Park
  • A short drive to Kielder Water and Forest watersports activities
  • Café/bar on site selling local produce and crafts
Remote, wild, spacious and scenic are all terms rightly fitting The Boe Rigg, in Northumberland National Park a few miles from the market town of Bellingham. Walking and cycling routes are all around here, along with a huge range of outdoor activities within a short drive including the high ropes, watersports and zipwires of Kielder Water and Forest. Also within driving distance are several famed north of England attractions such as Hadrian's Wall and Alnwick Castle, both under 40 miles, and the Northumberland Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, under 50. The site's excellent facilities include a café/bar open daily to sell produce and handicrafts from local growers and craftspeople. Among The Boe Rigg's other amenities are accessible washrooms with toilets and hot showers, a launderette with washers and dryers and a washing-up area. Free wifi is available in the main building. Campfires and barbecues are both allowed but must be off the ground.

Electric hardstanding touring pitch

Liked: Most expensive of the site's we used
Basic campsite laid back
Hardstanding could be tight to get a larger caravan in . Grass to side uneven
Food from restaurant generous portion sizes
Bar onsite
Good for night sky

Disliked: Needs a little bit of finishing off shower curtains, first night struggled for hot water. Toilets just need repairs finishing off

Electric hardstanding touring pitch

Liked: Having a restaurant/bar on site was a bonus. Dog-friendly in the bar area and cosy and welcoming.

Disliked: It was low season, so very quiet. At one point during our three night stay, we were the only caravan on the site. No sign of staff and the restaurant was closed that day (Sunday) so felt a bit lonely.

Electric hardstanding touring pitch

Liked: The location was brilliant, we only stayed here one night as we were doing a run around Kielder lake, so unfortunately we didn't explore much.

The host was nice and friendly. The showers and toilets were nice and clean, and warm too!

Lots of local wildlife in the area, but still it wasn't very noisy. We slept in until 0945.

I've only given activities a 3 star as we didn't do any so I'm unable to comment. Same again for the Wi-fi.

Overall would I stop here again, yes.

Disliked: A few of the sinks hot water taps didn't work.

The electric hook ups were a stretch, depending on which plot you are allocated. We have a 15m cable and it only just reached.

Electric hardstanding touring pitch

Liked: Location and proximity to local points of interest (keilder waters, observatory, and the inside bar/restaurant). The sky was clear meaning we managed to see loads at the observatory and back at the site.

Electric hardstanding touring pitch

Liked: Friendly staff, good facilities, level pitches and wonderful setting. Bonus to have pub/restaurant on site.
Also delighted to find service station in nearby Bellingham after driving through National Park!

Disliked: Water was off on our pitch due to a leak and dishes room got locked in evening when we went to do them around 9pm. No biggie.
Bathroom looked like it was half way through renovations perhaps? Very clean, new flooring, but broken doors on toilets.

Electric hardstanding touring pitch

Liked: Location

Disliked: We stayed for the Sunday only. There was nobody to meet us arrive. The restaurant/ pub was closed all day and night. Extremely small pitches. Did not have the feel of a nice clean campsite. The toilet disposal was a hole in the ground up a dirt track ( not that great sign posted. For £35 a night I do expect a better and cleaner campsite.

Local attractions

Kielder Water and Forest within 16 miles are full of watersports activities such as canoeing, sailing, and waterskiing, along with water walker and sea scooter hire. A high ropes course, climbing, zipwiring, fencing, archery and crossbow are among the many forest activities available on and above land. Three of the attractions of the Hadrian's Wall UNESCO World Heritage site are within a short drive: Housesteads Roman fort, the most complete in Britain; Vindolanda, and Chesters Roman Fort, six miles from Hexham. Also famed in the region is Alnwick Castle and Garden 37 miles away, made up of huge formal gardens including the world's largest treehouse, and in a setting that will be instantly recognised by Harry Potter fans (broomstick training is available during the summer months: how magic). The Northumberland Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty is about 45 miles from here, to reach Bamburgh Castle and Holy Island via moorland, countryside and ancient forest. The site is 45 miles from Carlisle.
