Non-electric grass pitch

Liked: Lovely open field, with access to the lake nearby. Shame you can't see the lake and castle from it. The showers were amazingly warm, and it was nice to have a washer and dryer on site too for a sensible price.

Disliked: Lack of view of the lake/castle. Field is a little more sloped than I would have liked...but that is me nitpicking!

Electric grass pitch

Liked: Wasn't overly impressed with anything if I'm honest.

Disliked: Quite a few things to be honest, big hole in the ground where we had to pitch was very uncomfortable but we had no choice to pitch there. The noise we had to endure from other campers and on both nights we were there we got woken up by a vehicle coming and going at 3am!!!!!!!

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked: Felt very upon arrival at reception, they gave clear instructions where to go and pitch our tent. They explained where all the facilities was, also gave us a leaflet on information on the site aswell as the local area. We found a nice pitch, and ultimately enjoyed our stay. Highly recommend.

Disliked: Nothing. The site adequate.

Electric hardstanding touring pitch

Liked: We were really happy with the site, first time here, receptionist was extremely helpful and polite. Shower and toilet block impeccable even though it seemed to be in constant use. Pitches were ok, a little on the narrow side to be honest. The surrounding lake and woodland were an absolute pleasure to walk around, 51 Swans on the lake at one point. We’re bird watchers and couldn’t believe it when we saw a small flock of Gold Crest, they are absolutely beautiful little birds.
We will definitely be returning to the site, and most definitely ask to be near the lake.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked: The staff in reception were ever so polite, and kind. The proximity to the castle, and York was wonderful, and the lake walk was picturesque.

Disliked: I know it’s part of the wildlife, and it can’t be helped, but the crows were very noisy, and the campsite got so busy that the toilets/showers were crowded. Would have been great if there were a park for the children to play in. No signal/wifi

Electric hardstanding touring pitch

Liked: Pitches well kept. Peaceful surroundings. Shower block and toilets centrally located with washing up amend washing machines attached with water waste and bins nearby. We had a lovely peaceful weekend.

Disliked: Nothing really. Bit of a hike to castle Howard if you’re a bit challenged but other than that could not fault. Wi-Fi dipped in and out.

Local attractions

Yorkshire folk are rightly proud of 'God's Own Country' – it's home to some of the finest historic houses, coast and countryside around. If you want to keep things local, head out to Kirkham Abbey (15 minutes' drive) to visit the ruins of the priory or for waterside strolls along the Derwent river. Like to be beside the seaside? Of course you do, and luckily this area has plenty of options to choose from. If you fancy venturing to Whitby's harbour and beaches, drive to Pickering (25 minutes) and hitch a ride on a steam train for a stonkingly scenic journey over the North York Moors. Bempton Cliffs Seabird Centre (an hour away) is a rather wilder beauty spot – this nature hub is home to about a quarter of a million nesting seabirds (so be sure to pack your binoculars). Art, architecture and landscaped grounds can all be rather moreish, so check out other historic houses in the area, like Nunnington Hall (20 minutes), Duncombe Park (25 minutes), Sledmere House (30 minutes) and Beningbrough Hall (40 minutes), if you fancy a change of scene on your blue-blooded escapades.
