  • Intimate adults-only site a 15-minute drive from York city centre
  • Beningbrough Hall 15 minutes’ drive; Dalby Forest 50 minutes
  • Dogs welcome; café; communal fridge; launderette with tumble dryer
Ah, Yorkshire – they don’t call it ‘God’s own country’ for nothing. Whether you want to hike in the splendid North York Moors National Park (35 minutes’ drive) or the Howardian Hills National Landscape (20 minutes), or explore the sights of York, such as the medieval Minster (15 minutes), The Little Hide puts you within fairly short and convenient access. Sitting just on the other side of the A1237 from York, The Little Hide feels like a world away from the city, surrounded by rural landscapes and agricultural fields. What’s more, this is a grown-up place for grown-up people (and their canine companions), and there are no children here to disrupt your peaceful break – only the occasional quack from the ducks in the pond… Accommodation comes with a luxurious finish – think elegant decorative touches, fluffy pillows and fleecy blankets (but do remember to bring your own towels), plus a kettle for a well-deserved hot brew after a wind-swept hike. If you fancy making something more substantial, the Fridge Shack has a communal fridge freezer, toaster and microwave (the nearest supermarket is a five-minute drive away), or you can head to the on-site café for farmhouse breakfasts and simple lunches. Oh, and home-made cakes. The site also has toilet and shower blocks (including facilities for disabled guests) with pay-to-use hairdryers, and a launderette with a tumble dryer, an iron and ironing board if you need to look your best when you go into York for dinner, for example.

Posh camping pod (no pets)

Liked: Quiet environment. Good beddding.

Disliked: Lack of privacy, too dark inside due to sunscreening sticked on windows, no table, chairs nor toaster inside. Lighting cold and unsufficient, distance to the toilets too far. the whole place needs some TLC

From the manager: Dear Mr De Boeck, I am so sorry that you did not enjoy your camping stay - the pods are designed to be cozy, and the film is to give you privacy. The photos show that there are no tables inside, but there is nothing to stop you bringing the outside table inside... The toaster is in the communal Fridge Shack for you to use at your convenience, along with a microwave and fridges. There is not enough room in the pods for these things, and it does not say that there are in the pods, only available to them.
The toilets are a 30 second walk away - that's pretty close really, and we are starting work on the garden area now that it better weather. I'm disapointed in your review, you never made contact with us when you were here to express any problems with us, so we could address them... Regards, Donna

Local attractions

Make the York City Walls your first stop upon arriving in York (15 minutes’ drive): the walkway atop these medieval fortifications should give you a decent idea of where the main sights lie, from the Minster (with more splendid views from the top of the tower), to the ruins of St Mary’s Abbey. Meanwhile, trainspotters might want to head straight to the National Railway Museum. A Georgian red-brick mansion with a history going back to the Elizabethan era, Beningbrough Hall (15 minutes) is home to temporary art exhibitions in the first-floor Reddihough Galleries. The gardens include themed areas such as a formal garden, a walled orchard and a Mediterranean zone. Dalby Forest (50 minutes) is the place to embrace nature, whether you’re into hiking (or mountain biking) along hilly wooded trails, exploring the tree canopy from a Go Ape course or admiring the night sky (Dalby is a designated Dark Sky Discovery Site).
