  • Adults-only site in the centre of Thorganby village
  • A 25-minute drive to York or 35 minutes to Castle Howard
  • Bus stop nearby for services to York
An easy pace of country living is the essence of this adults-only site in rural North Yorkshire. Country Living Campsite is in a top location in the centre of Thorganby village, an attractive spot with direct bus services into York city centre (Monday to Saturday; please note that there is no bus service on bank holidays). The site has a limited number of pitches and only adults are allowed, so the whole place has a quiet, relaxed vibe that's great for laidback country holidays. Settle into this slower pace of rural life by taking a walk on one of the many footpaths that crisscross the local countryside or by simply sitting back and appreciating the open views, wildlife and spectacular sunsets. If you’re minded to travel further afield, this site is within easy reach of major routes, so you can easily access destinations like York (25 minutes' drive), Castle Howard (35 minutes), the North York Moors National Park (50 minutes), and Yorkshire's gorgeous east coast (an hour and five minutes).

Electric optional grass and gravel touring pitch

Liked: Secluded position. Nice outlook and quiet

Disliked: Arrived in our campervan without our own facilities only to find the toilet block locked and out of order, leaving us rather stranded. Even though the owner was sympathetic this didn’t resolve anything. A partial refund as gesture of goodwill would have been appreciated as £24 for parking alone out season is rather expensive.

From the manager: We do not take campervans due to them not having their own facilities. Unfortunately pitch up do not differentiate between campervans and motorhomes so have done a work around which should have highlighted no campervans on booking. Our facilities were also closed for winter - if the boiler hadnt recently burst in the frost i would have opened the toilet - this was explained at the time. I offered full refund to give opportunity of going elsewhere. Not much more i could have done.

Non-electric grass and gravel touring pitch

Liked: Very quiet rural site with beautiful views of the countryside. Shower and toilet facilities available although we didn't use them. We had a peaceful undisturbed sleep. We received a text message from the owners letting us know what pitch we would be on and to make ourselves at home. Plenty of taps for water

Disliked: A stone pathway to the grey water point would be of benefit especially in the winter time as the ground was very wet. To empty the grey water from your motorhome requires a lay of about 15 metres of pipe as you cannot drive up to it or a grey water waste carrier. Although if it is on wheels you would struggle to wheel across the grassed area.

Electric optional grass and gravel touring pitch

Liked: Ease of arrival and set up. Great shower and onsite loo. Walks from the site in all directions is perfect and this is probably the quietest site I have been on. Lesley is a fantastic host and it was nice talking to her about her horses and the countryside. Very easy to get to from the A19 and the A1 so will use it as our stop off when travelling.

Disliked: Leaving

Electric optional grass and gravel touring pitch

Liked: Quiet site. Friendly owner with excellent communication before and during stay. Yes there’s only 1 toilet and shower but we were well aware of this before booking and only 1 other person on site so not an issue at all! Shower lovely, hot and powerful and hot water for washing up! Pitches were large and level. 100% will be visiting again!

Disliked: Only small gripe was no light over washing up facilities so it was pitch black…. Easily resolved by the use of a light up beanie! Also not a dislike, more an FYI, the road leading to the site is very dark so go slowly so as not to miss the turning.

Non-electric grass and gravel touring pitch

Liked: The site is small, simple and with all the basic things you’ll need. One toilet, one shower, chemical toilet disposal, water, bins, and outdoor washing up area.

There are 6 pitches with electric hook up and 6 without. All have gravel hard standing and grass and are level.

The owner gave helpful instructions for self check in and we chose from the available non-electric pitches. We chose the end pitch and reversed in so we had an unobstructed view of the adjoining fields. Lovely. It’s a very peaceful site which overlooks fields and trees. Ideal if you want a quiet escape. We really like adult only and smaller sites for that reason.

We met the owner later on and she was very friendly and helpful.

Recommended and this is on our list of places we would happily return to.

Disliked: Nothing. The facilities were limited but clean, tidy, and exactly as described.

Route directions

After going past the few houses at the top of the lane, look for the site entrance on the left, near a large oak tree. Please take it slowly as the lane is a no-through road and it's tricky to turn round on if you miss the entrance. (If you do miss the entrance you will need to continue for about a mile then use the track at the end to turn around.)

Local attractions

The biggest boon of this site is its quiet countryside location coupled with its proximity to transport connections that take you out to some of North Yorkshire's best spots. Historic York has a fab café culture and packed cultural events calendar, and is also a particularly tiptop spot for those holidaymakers who are partial to an abundance of old buildings, monuments and museums. Learn about Vikings at the Jorvik Centre, take a wander around the National Railway Museum or visit the country's biggest independent air museum; York Minster and York Castle Museum are another two of the city's absolute must-sees. Outside York, both Harrogate and Leeds are around an hour’s drive away from Country Living Campsite and jam-packed with historic highlights and a lot of independent local shops and restaurants. Castle Howard can be reached within just over half an hour too. Towards Hull, immerse yourself in the exhibits of award-winning aquarium, The Deep, where seven species of shark swim among the countless other sea creatures that roam the centre's numerous aquarium tanks.
