  • Well-equipped family-friendly site a 15-minute drive from Scarborough
  • Fishing lakes five minutes’ drive; North York Moors 20 minutes
  • Cycle hire; play area; launderette; licensed shop; dog-washing station
Don’t let the name mislead you: there is more to St Helens Caravan Park than… well, caravan pitches. Indeed, with several accommodation options, this site is definitely a contender for your next North Yorkshire family holiday. And if you’re looking for a romantic break, there’s also an adults-only area where you will be undisturbed by… er, over-enthusiastic children. (There’s also enforced quiet time after 10pm.) St Helens sits in the Vale of Pickering, between the Beedale Beck river and the A170, which takes you straight to Scarborough in about 15 minutes (by car). It’s a great location – of that, there’s little doubt. Are you into fishing? There’s top-class angling in the four freshwater lakes that make up the North Yorkshire Water Park Fisheries (five minutes’ drive). Maybe you prefer hiking? Besides easy woodland walks in the vicinity, you’re at the southern tip of North York Moors National Park here (20 minutes) and not far from Howardian Hills National Landscape (45 minutes). And if you fancy a day at the seaside, sandy Scarborough Beach (15 minutes) is a fine spot for a swim or an ice cream as you watch the tide come in. Back at the site after a day with the kids, no one would blame you for wanting some time to yourself, so leave the children to make new friends in the playground and take the dog for a nice walk. Muddy tracks? No problem: with a dog-washing station on site, your four-legged companion will look even fluffier and more handsome than when you first arrived. Other facilities on site include a café and a licensed shop, family-friendly bathrooms, a launderette and cycle hire.

Camping pod

Liked: The scenic views, cleanliness of site & toilets

Disliked: How basic the pod was (1 socket, 1 heater, 1 lamp)
Pods location - stuck down the back of site
No wifi connection
Distance to the toilets and the lack of footpaths
Cafe place was only open one evening for food

Camping pod

Liked: The site was absolutely lovely. Well laid out pitches, paths, roads and facilities.
The shower blocks were amazing and they were so clean. The staff were friendly and approachable. My son loved the adventure playground. We both enjoyed Pizza night at the Hitch and Brew.
We had a camping pod which was exactly as described. We watched the sun set over the fields from the decked area of our pod. The site benefits from being in a dark skies area and we were blessed with a clear night so saw thousands of stars!

Disliked: Nothing

Electric optional grass touring pitch

Liked: The pitch was a great size and had the services within it. The park sits in a beautiful area and there were plenty different sounds of nature to be heard. The facilities are very well appointed as individual shower rooms with local radio playing (which I found a great touch).
The staff are all very pleasant and welcoming and always seem to be on hand should there be any issues (which there definitely weren't for us). I love the proximity to all the seaside towns which makes this site a gem to visit.

Disliked: Nothing at all

Camping pod

Liked: Pod 3 was fantastic, we couldn’t have asked for more and for the price too! The Reception experience was easy and fold out map really useful. Site was very clean and had everything we could have needed and more. It felt very safe with a young child and really child friendly, but not too loud or busy either.

Bathroom facilities were the best we’ve ever visited… and with under floor heating! The cafe was really good, flapjack especially. Playground was a great success, really good mixture of things for children of different ages and loads of room. The donkeys and llama were a really nice addition to our stay. We didn’t make use of them but loved the additions of the private bathrooms, bike and dog wash. Everything was so cleverly and carefully thought out, including the site maintenance as we regularly saw site team tidying/ planting and maintaining a really beautiful site.

We wish we’d booked an extra night and will definitely be back again!

Disliked: Can’t think of anything it really was a gem of a find!

Local attractions

At North Yorkshire Water Park (10 minutes’ drive or a 15-minute bike ride) the entire family can make a bit of a splash, either on the inflatable obstacle course or having a go at wakeboarding. There’s also paddleboarding, kayaking and open-water swimming, plus (for those who prefer solid earth to water) climbing and axe throwing. Scrambling up the headland that is home to Scarborough Castle gives you the chance to admire the town’s two beaches from up high: South Beach is lively and lined with shops and arcades, while North Beach tends to be less busy. At its northernmost end is the SEA LIFE Scarborough aquarium. Dotted with statues, follies and fountains, the gardens at Castle Howard (40 minutes) are quite spectacular. Swans and other birds inhabit the area around the lakes and waterways, and it is also possible to take a rowing boat for a trip around the Great Lake.
