Pitches on site

  • Family-friendly rural site 10 minutes’ drive from Scarborough
  • A 15-minute drive to Dalby Forest; half an hour to Filey Brigg
  • Part of a 138-acre farm with roe deer and other wildlife on site
For those who can’t decide between coast and countryside, Prospect House Farm Campsite might be a very sensible solution. This small, family-friendly site is set among the green North Yorkshire hills and yet it's only a 10-minute drive from Scarborough’s beaches. Pitches here are in a field that's part of a 138-acre livestock farm, and they're all set up to be mighty peaceful. The pitching field is a car-free zone and your neighbours in the next-door fields are dairy and longhorn cattle. It's a popular spot for wildlife too – you might spot roe deer, foxes and badgers as you stroll through the meadows or head out on stone-walled bridleways. Campfires are permitted on site here, so set off for the village of Scalby (five minutes' drive) to pick up provisions from the store (handy to note the village also has a couple of pubs if you'd rather settle in for a cosy evening…) Back at base, amenities include a washing-up area, recycling points and a bathroom block with showers. Days out? Perhaps a hike through Wykeham Forest up to Raptor Viewpoint for the sight of buzzards, ospreys and kestrels flying overhead, or an outing to Scarborough, where you can relax with fish and chips on the beach while the kids dip their toes in the sea or jump between rockpools. And if you’ve always wanted to have a go at surfing or paddleboarding, this is the place for you, provided you can brave the chilly North Sea waters (though surf schools have wetsuits for hire).

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Liked that there were clean & warm showers, clean toilets, that we could have campfires was a bonus; the shop was well stocked, the fridge/freezer plus charging points were all clean & nice to have’s. The pitches were clean & well marked. The location was really good in that we were central to Scarborough & Whitby which are lovely towns to visit. Joe was welcoming, friendly, helpful & knowledgeable on everything we had any questions about.

Disliked: Although the site does say that you can’t park your car at the pitch, we assumed that we’d be able to drive our car to the pitch to offload our tent & bags etc but alas, the reality of a tree blocking the entrance with wheelbarrows to the right of it, met us at the drop off point; making their intentions abundantly clear.

Non-electric grass motorhome pitch

Liked: Saturday night stay

Conveniently placed for Scarborough. Camper/motorhome/caravan pitches - Small amount of pitches gives a more personal feel fornyour stay. Quaint little toilet block - reconditioned horse box

Disliked: Saturday night stay

Website says the site is dog free so we left the dog at home. At least two pitches had dogs with them so pretty dissapointed there as Milo woulda loved Scarborough

Despite beng advertised as a peaceful and serene site it also has a party venue and loud live music played til around 10. We were expecting a quiet site. Also on checking in we just had some guy walk up from the venue with a drink in his hand and tell us some directions to our pitch and rhen he walked off back - felt a bit unprofessional.

Check out at 10am is perfectly understandable on a busy site with high volume and high turnaround but on a small site with a boho atmosphere it just seems a bit of a rush, for what? They're slightly sloped grass pitches with no EHU... what's the urgency with vacating pitches?

Booking auto enrols you with The Greener Camping Club. I have no idea what I've paid for here. No confirmation email, no emembership card sent via email as promised, nothing showing that I am now a member of the GCC. i guess the next time I book a GCC site my membership will kick in and I'll get £12 off? To join GCC it's £12 for 12 months but only 1st Jan thru 31st Dec. I booked my pitch a month back in July so I'm paying double essentially - £12 for 6 months. What a rip off. But wait, if you sign up for the GCC in september you get membership for 15 months... makes no sense. If I pay £12 I want 12 months. Just charge me a pound for a months membership otherwise.

From the manager: Hi Ben,

Thanks for your feedback, and just to clarify a few points. The site is dog free, and the people you mention were asked to leave when we discovered they had dogs with them. We don't have a party venue, we were having a private party for a birthday, everyone on site was made aware. And other people pitched next to you heard nothing.

The benefits of the greener camping club far outweigh the membership cost. We promote small campsites with masses of space, as per your first comment that is exactly what you experianced. We are not like other sites, with pitches crammed in, as many as possible. A tree is planted on site for every member enrolled and looked after until mature. You now have access to all the other GCC sites across the UK that offer a similar experiance.

Non-electric grass tent pitch (family)

Liked: We were concerned about not being able to drive to our pitch to set up, but when we arrived we were given a pitch in the camper van field, so we could keep the car next to us. This was much better as we camp with some heavy gear.
The site is beautiful with great views and huge pitches nicely divided by long grass - great for the environment.
The owner is very friendly and helpful.
The toilets are clean, the shower hot, and constant flow- best I’ve had camping in uk. It was a busy bank holiday - so a second pot washing sink would have been good.
It’s a fabulous little site - we’ll definitely go back and highly recommend.

Disliked: Nothing to dislike really, we would ask to be in the camper van field again for our own set up.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Lovely location

Disliked: Paid £44 for a pitch for two nights, when I arrived at 5pm there was nowhere to pitch my tent so I left for another campsite. Not much else to say

From the manager: Hi Simon,

We are quite disappointed you felt the need to write this and felt the need to leave site to find somewhere else. I have checked back through our booking system and on the day you came to stay there was 4 spare pitches excluding your own that was reserved for you. We also have a spare pitch that isn't bookable in case of emergencies or walk ins that are desperate for a place to stay. So it is impossible that there wasn't space for you. You also never rang to discuss this whilst on site, if you had it could have been swiftly rectified.

Kind regards

Liked: Really peaceful campsite. Basic but well looked after. Shower was hot and clean and the toilets always had loo roll in. Not far from a supermarket and easy to get to the beach.

Disliked: Would have been nice if there was an area to have a game of footy or rounders in.

Local attractions

Scarborough (10 minutes’ drive) has much more to offer than just sandy beaches and watersports (although both of those are excellent prospects). Other options include the medieval fortress, which has expansive coastal views from the grounds, or the chance to make a splash at Peasholm Water Chute – or an even bigger splash at Alpamare waterpark, where the kids can play in the wave pool and on the twisty slides while the adults treat themselves to a spa treatment. There's no shortage of active pursuits at Dalby Forest (15 minutes), which has cycling and mountain-biking trails (including a World Cup MTB trail), a Go Ape Treetop Challenge and forest Segway rides. Younger children, meanwhile, can have fun searching for the Gruffalo sculptures or building a den. If that doesn't give you your fill of wildlife, head to Filey Brigg (half an hour), where the dramatic headland stretches into the North Sea and provides a home to guillemots and cormorants, plus grey seals. If you strike it lucky, you might also witness the odd whale or dolphin swim past.
