  • North Yorkshire shepherd’s huts 20 minutes’ drive from Pickering
  • Edging the North York Moors National Park; Whitby beaches 40 minutes
  • Luxury accommodation with ensuite bathroom and private hot tub
When the siren call of spectacular North Yorkshire comes calling, answer it and book a stay in bespoke luxury at Middlehead Huts, a small group of shepherd’s huts at Stape, 20 minutes’ drive from Pickering on the edge of the North York Moors National Park. Sleeping up to three guests, each of the well-equipped and stylish huts – which were all built on site – has a living and sleeping area with a proper double bed and a sofa, a well-equipped kitchen corner with all the utensils you need to conjure up simple meals, wardrobe space and a dining table. Ensuites have a shower, sink, loo and shaving point, and all linens are supplied too. Air conditioning takes care of summer heat and a woodburner keeps everything toasty warm on cooler days; you can slump in front of the Smart TV for downtime, and if you hit any rainy days, there’s a huge selection of books and games to be found in the conservatory by the site’s cottages. Outside each shepherd’s hut is a prettily landscaped grassed garden with picnic seating and a firepit, plus what's likely to be the real highlight for many guests: your own private hot tub. Anglers can go fishing on the pond (you’ll need to buy a licence), and there’s a free EV charger for guest use, as well as communal washers and dryers.

Local attractions

What’s it to be – the moors or the beach? Luckily they’re both close to hand. If you’d like to see them on the same day, jump aboard the North Yorkshire Moors Railway at Pickering (20 minutes’ drive) to steam across heather uplands to Whitby (40 minutes), overlooked by its dramatic Gothic-era abbey and with a choice of beaches, where you can paddle in the sea or forage for jet among the rock pools. If you’d prefer to explore on foot, there are numerous walks from the site – it takes about two hours to walk to the ruins of remote Skelton Tower. Hit Goathland (half an hour’s drive) for a family stroll up to Mallyan Spout Waterfall (15 minutes’ walk), or a longer jaunt across the moor to Simon Howe Stone Circle (50 minutes) for views across moortops to the North Sea. Kids in tow? Inspire them with a love of nature at the wildlife exhibitions in Dalby Forest Visitor Centre (35 minutes’ drive), let them try out the family-friendly mountain bike trails and then all have a go on the zipwires at Go Ape Dalby (also 35 minutes).
