  • Quiet off-grid site on a working farm at Arkendale in North Yorkshire
  • Knaresborough 10 minutes’ drive; Fountains Abbey half an hour
  • Farm shop, pub and supermarkets all within 10 minutes’ drive
Sometimes you just want things simple and peaceful, and that’s where Poplars Farm comes in… This pop-up site is on a working North Yorkshire farm, 10 minutes’ drive from the River Nidd-side town of Knaresborough, and there’s definitely something of a wild camping vibe here. Pitches (some are sloping) are in a neatly mown grass field, and although facilities stretch to a portable loo, there are no showers or electricity on site. Walkers will be pleased to hear that the circular Knaresborough Round hiking route passes through the farm, and there’s plenty of other stuff to do with the kids nearby. Go fishing at Staveley Nature Reserve (10 minutes’ drive, keep a look out for the otters on the wetlands), or play a round on the golf course at Knaresborough (five minutes). Alternatively, try clay pigeon shooting at Hazel Bank Shooting Ground (also five minutes) and go-karting at Tockwith Karting Yorkshire (20 minutes). York, its minster and museums are 40 minutes’ drive away for a dose of culture, and the lively shopping hub of Harrogate is 20 minutes in the car. Everything you want for cooking on the barbecue is available in Boroughbridge supermarkets (10 minutes’ drive), but if you’re not in the frame of mind for cooking, then a tasty breakfast awaits at the farm shop in Minskip (10 minutes), and there’s a good foodie pub in the local village of Arkendale (five minutes’ drive/half an hour’s walk).
