  • Quiet, family-friendly site 10 minutes’ drive from Withernsea
  • Within walking distance of two wildlife-packed nature reserves
  • Aquarium and small zoo a 40-minute drive away in Hull
Calling all walkers and wildlife spotters… fancy pitching up within strolling distance of not one, but two nature reserves? That’s the deal at Garth Farm Caravan and Camping in Hollym, less than 10 minutes’ drive from Withernsea’s coast and 40 minutes from Hull. It's all trees and open fields in the surrounds of this family-run East Yorkshire site, and the pleasing rural views continue at Toffling Hill Reserve (a few minutes’ walk), a place of grassy areas, boundary trees and a shallow pond to explore. Continue your amble for a further 15 minutes to hit the woodland, meadow and open water of Hollym Carrs Reserve, where you should certainly keep an eye out for a variety of birds, mammals and insects while you wander. Supplies can be picked up in nearby Withernsea, which has a couple of supermarkets, or Patrington (a five-minute drive), where it's highly recommended that you head to the local butcher to pick up bits for a barbecue back at base. For those with a no-cooking-on-holiday rule, there’s a local pub serving food and drink, and a coffee shop dishing up homemade cakes and sandwiches at Crossroads Garden Centre; both are around 10 minutes’ walk away. Facilities here are kept on the low-key side to ensure minimal impact on the surrounds, but the basics are covered in the toilet block on site.

Electric hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked: Was met after I got my caravan set up by Hannah. She answered all my questions. Pitches completely level and a little slope. Pitches big enough for caravan car and awning. Own water tap per pitch. Easy to find. 1 toilet and shower each for male and female. Normal farm noises. But no road noise. Great phone signal. Clean facilities

Electric hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked: Each pitch has individual water points and electric also close to pitches. Was able to level the van with small ramps so not too bad, good sized area, well kept. Was welcomed by the owner while setting up also. Pub with good food 8-10 minutes walk really nice.

Disliked: Uneven grass next to the hardstanding part of our pitch, could do with some levelling.

Winter electric hardstanding and grass pitch

Liked: Good large hard standing pitches. water and electric at the end of each pitch. Moved our booking to another date at short notice.

Disliked: One building with two toilets and two showers in. Not a fan of sharing intimate spaces with the opposite sex (they are separate cubicles). No view. No rubbish bins, just one for mixed recycling.

From the manager: Thank you for your comments.

We make it clear on the pitchup.com page that the facilties are shared and also that there are 3 showers on site. Therefore, guests are aware of this before they make a booking with us. We are in the process of adding an additional toilet into the large family shower room (3rd shower). While you where here this shower room is under maintenance so was closed for your stay - as you moved your dates 3 weeks forward at last minute we where not able to finish this work before your arrival. As you where the only guests on site at the time we did not think that this would be too much of an issue for the couple of nights you where here.

We have a mixed recycling bin by the facilities block. But there is also a large green (1000litre) commercial bin by the entrance gate for all waste and rubbish. Sorry that you did not see this.

We have plenty of pictures on pitchup.com of the site layout, site facilites and site description. We do not advertise that we have "views". We are a countryside site surrounded by trees and fields. During your stay we had incredible clear night skies with no light pollution.

Sorry that our site is not for you - we wish you well in your future camping trips.

Electric hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked: Lovely countryside stay. Quiet site.
Great for dog walking.
Facilities were basic but clean. Owner very helpful.
You do need a long electric cable ours is 10 meter but needed to be longer for the pitch. Contacted owner who kindly let us move pitch.

Disliked: Two toilets next door to each other.
That would be ok when site is quiet but not enough when busy.

From the manager: Thank you for your comments.

The track to the site is a council owned road and therefore is not our responsibility - this is the reason we are unable to have any signs to the site. We have, however, put a sign in the the tree with arrows showing where the site is. We also send a welcome email prior to arrival with pin-point location details and site directions to the site.

We have mentioned many, many times on other reviews that our plan is to add more facilities. As a new site it will take time to achieve this and the costs involved are high. While on site there was only yourselves and 3 other families so I am sure that there was no issues with the number of facilities during the time you where here.

We ask guest to only dispose of Eco friendly toilet chemicals - this is due to the horrendous chemicals that are in the alternatives - it is damaging to the environment and has to be emptied by a specialist hazardous chemicals company costing thousands of pounds. As you know we do sell this on site for cost and so all guests are able to purchase it if they have not got any. The eco toilet fluid is available in all shops that sell camping equipment so we are not asking for something unusual.

Local attractions

Swap the rural scenes for seaside ones with a trip to Withernsea (less than 10 minutes by car). Along with arcades, shops, cafés and, of course, the beach, there’s also a lighthouse here with a museum; energetic visitors can clamber up the 144 steps to the top for pretty views. Anglers should make time for some fishing in Holmpton (less than 10 minutes), which has a couple of public fishing ponds. While you’re in the village, delve into the underground nuclear bunker at the former RAF Holmpton. Watery activities continue at Hornsea Mere, the largest freshwater lake in Yorkshire (40 minutes), with rowing, sailing, boat trips and fishing. It’s a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest and a Special Protection Area for birds, so it’s a great spot for birdwatching, too. There are more sights to be had on dry land, such as the Elizabethan Burton Constable Hall & Grounds (35 minutes). Day trips to Hull city (40 minutes) come stacked with kid-friendly attractions, including The Deep aquarium (home to more than 3,500 marine creatures) and East Park, a public park with a small zoo and log flume ride.
