  • East Yorkshire caravan park 25 minutes’ drive from historic York
  • Castle Howard 25 minutes’ drive and Flamingo Land Resort 35 minutes
  • Grass and hardstanding pitches at a historic former railway station
It’s not every day that you get to camp up at a former railway station, and certainly not one used during World War II for troop movements. Such is your luck when you book a stay at East Yorkshire’s Fangfoss Old Station Caravan Park, 25 minutes’ drive from historic York and its many attractions. Covering 4.5 acres of prime Yorkshire countryside, the park has grown up around the former platforms and railway station (the latter now a Grade II listed building), with some pitches set along the old railway line (it closed in November 1965) and others in a well-drained field. All have electric hook-ups. The roads surrounding the park are good, and there’s no fiddly manoeuvring to be done to get in through the wide entrance gate. Once on site, a service road gives easy access to all the caravan and tent pitches too, and everywhere is lit up at night for ease of movement. Kids are welcome and they can keep themselves safely occupied at the play area. If you’re bringing dogs, please keep them on leads while on the park and pick up any mess. You can exercise your pets on several quiet rural walks direct from the pitches. Park owners Jo and Simon are constantly on hand to help you out and make your stay as enjoyable as possible.

Fully-serviced grass and gravel pitch

Liked: Recycling.

Disliked: The pitch was supposed to have been a fully serviced pitch but it wasn’t, yes there was water and yes there was electricity but that was not on the pitch what a fully serviced pitch is and no drain on the pitch.
The pitches looked scruffy with what looked like an old awning poking through in places , some places uneven I nearly broke my ankle going to the hook up board.
We did not meet the owners.
Not worth the £30 -00 a night paid.

Fully-serviced grass and gravel pitch

Liked: Plenty of room for caravan and awning. Park kept the kids occupied with the added extra of plenty of space for a kick about with football.

Disliked: Nothing

Liked: View, nice dog walk where dogs can run free!
Rocky! Very helpful & informative. Will do anything for anybody!
People were friendly.
Everything you need, shower block, washing up & laundry area. Park for kids.
This place has great potential to be amazing and a lovely peaceful retreat!!

Disliked: Ok, on arrival it looks run down and tatty. This is mainly due to the very old and neglected caravans that are obviously residents/long term or stored vans!
Give them a clean!! It will make a hell of a difference to the aesthetics of the site.
Nobody wants to see green falling apart caravans they make it look like a breakers yard.

Toilets smell foisty with a sewage smell, but are clean with a radio in the background. Showers although look dated are mira showers and the water was hot and nice new shower curtain. Could do with a little buffet or stool in there to sit on to get dressed.

Pitches aren’t fully serviced you need to go get your own water they are just electric.

It definitely needs work to bring it up to standard!
Having said all that we have been told improvements are being made and you can see where they have cleared parts for the hardstandings. They are relatively new owners and hopefully it gets the modernising this gem of a site deserves!

Maybe a little leaflet handed out on arrival explaining about the site, pitches and local info would be great and much easier than having to explain everything.
Wish you lots of luck!
Rocky rocks!

Fully-serviced grass and gravel pitch

Liked: There’s a really lovely pub in the nearby village which has a great menu and was very friendly

Disliked: Nobody around to greet us. No reception sign. I had to phone them and wait ages for someone to come. The site is unkempt and the pitches are squashed in haphazardly. Half the site was a permanent residence and the vehicle were old and dirty and surrounded by mess. The hard standing area was more like a car park, gravel full of weeds. There wasn’t an electric pitch available for us even though we had booked one, so he offered us a patch of grass behind a wall where we could reach a hookup which was probably the best place on the site. Toilets were not bad but not good enough. There aren’t any good walks around here and the roads have no paths.. We will not be returning unfortunately

Liked: On arrival the signal isn’t great on where to book in but Rocky meet us and was extremely welcoming, explained where we could pitch up and where all the amenities are. The site itself was clean and could see rocky took pride in the site. Facilities could do with an upgrade but clean and more than adequate

Disliked: Could do with some investment in the pitches, toilet block and kids play area

Local attractions

The beguiling city of York (25 minutes’ drive) beckons with its landmark Gothic-era Minster (climb the tower for spectacular views over city rooftops), medieval dioramas at Jorvik Viking Centre and walks around the city walls. You can also take scenic cruises down the River Ouse, hang out in historic waterside pubs or frighten the whole family on guided ghost walks after dark. Cultural types among you might marvel at the sumptuous rooms and priceless antiques at Castle Howard (25 minutes), where you can also breathe in clean Yorkshire air as you explore the 18th-century follies and monuments that dot the surrounding parkland. Fans of war history could make a beeline for the World War II aircraft and armoured tanks on display at Eden Camp Modern History Museum (half an hour). Kids will probably fret until they’ve spent a day on rollercoasters or spotted big cats at Flamingo Land Resort (35 minutes); if they’re not behaving well, threaten to lose them – and find them again of course – in the corn labyrinth at York Maze (15 minutes, seasonal).
