  • Ensuite glamping pods in the grounds of a traditional village pub
  • In the Yorkshire Wolds, half an hour's drive from York
  • Pub serving breakfasts, home-cooked meals and local ales
If you’re up for long walks or bike rides by day, but only a short stroll from dinner to bed, a stay at Ye Olde Red Lion should suit you very well indeed. The glamping pods at this East Yorkshire site are in a quiet corner of the landscaped grounds at a traditional village pub – far enough away from the main building to give you a peaceful stay but crucially only a very short amble from dinner and drinks. The pub and pods are in the village of Holme-on-Spalding-Moor, a handy location for getting out to walking and bike routes in the Yorkshire Wolds. The village is on a main A road and has bus stops, so it’s easy to go out exploring further into Yorkshire too – perhaps heading to the east coast or taking days out in York, Leeds or Hull? That village location is pretty useful for amenities too: there’s a convenience store, a café, a takeaway and another pub a short walk away. The highlight is surely the pub itself though, which is open for breakfasts and then offers a full menu of well-priced home-cooked food from lunchtime through to the evening. There are plenty of cosy corners to nurse a drink too – maybe a pint of something local, or a choice from the selection of over 30 gins? Whatever you pick in the pub you’ll no doubt be pleased that it’s only a short walk back to your pod, where beds are made up and you’ll have a range of useful things including heating, wifi, a kitchenette and an ensuite shower room.

Local attractions

Set off in search of your rural neighbours with outings to North Cave Wetlands reserve (15 minutes’ drive) or RSPB Blacktoft Sands (35 minutes) – both are great places for spotting all sorts of native and migratory birds. For a different kind of animal encounter, visit Ings Park Alpacas (15 minutes), where you can book alpaca walks or have a giggle with some sheep trekking. Bit of city time thrown into the mix? Head to York (half an hour) for a day of walking the city walls, visiting the minster and stepping back in time at the Jorvik Centre and National Railway Museum. Hull (40 minutes) is another great choice, especially if you’d like to eyeball sea creatures at The Deep aquarium, and there’s always plenty to do in Leeds (50 minutes). Something for the kids to do? Various adventures await at William’s Den (15 minutes) – or how about a day on the beach in Bridlington (45 minutes)? If you don’t have the family in tow, maybe a leisurely stroll around Burnby Hall Gardens (15 minutes) might be on the cards instead.
