  • Peaceful, family-friendly farm campsite at Bildershaw in County Durham
  • Raby Castle and Locomotion railway museum both 10 minutes by car
  • Spacious, dog-friendly grass pitches; small café and basic shop
Looking to treat the kids to ‘proper’ camping in a rural field? Without all the posh accoutrements of glamping, but with bags of fun things to do in the area? Roll up to Stone House Farm at Bildershaw, 15 minutes’ drive from Bishop Auckland in County Durham. As well as being only 50 minutes’ drive from the sandy beach and amusement arcades of Redcar, this pop-up site is close to major family attractions including Raby Castle and Locomotion railway museum (both 10 minutes by car), as well as Diggerland Durham (35 minutes). Set on a working farm just off the A68 to Corbridge, the well-maintained camping field has level grass pitches with views over the valley towards Barnard Castle. There’s plenty of room for parking up next to your pitch, having a family kick around with a ball and sparking up your barbecue for alfresco feasts on warmer nights. Grab your morning coffee at the small on-site café or browse for some light snacks at the basic on-site shop. Now the practical bits: if you’re bringing the family dog(s), please keep them on leads around the farm. Please note there are compost loos and an under-cover washing-up sink, but there is no hot water and no electricity on site.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Big field, beautiful views, ground good for pegging. Little shop was helpful, friendly owner. Fire pits available as a kit for £10, bag of logs was surprisingly big and plenty. Car park for additional cars is handy too. This site is on a hill so sacrifice a bit of level ground for beautiful views of Weardale!

Disliked Facilities a bit tired but functional. Second night music continued on past midnight but always expected on a sunny evening and hard to police.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked - Nice big fields with great views
- Cooked breakfasts available
- Small cafe/shop with snacks and beers
- Washing up shack
- Activities like axe throwing and archey for an extra fee
- Very easy access to bridleways/footpaths - includung a bridleway skirting the site perimeter

Disliked - Road noise was the only real detractor for this site. Nothing they can do about it of course, and you mostly get used to it, but it does remind you that you're not that far out in the sticks.
- Just one portaloo for the whole site, as well as some compost toilets. Not a problem for us but something to be aware of

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Spacious pitches, clean toilet, friendly host, reasonably priced, well signposted. Good as an overnighter on a long trip

Disliked No rules around quiet time. Groups were drinking and being noisy until 3am so sleep was disturbed. Wouldn't stay again with kids for this reason, but if you're looking for a venue that will offer that ethos then this would be ideal.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Personally welcomed by site owner who explained where everything was and where the best spot to pitch up was. Informed us what was available, gave us his number in case we needed anything.
The site itself is beautiful and has stunning views from the top field, we went on a day that was quiet, which we liked, as it was our first family camping experience and having the site to ourselves made it that much nicer. Fire pits are available to buy on site and there is a toilet and drinking water available.
