  • Small, peaceful and dog-friendly site on the River Stour in Suffolk
  • Lavenham 20 minutes’ drive; Jimmy’s Farm & Wildlife Park 45 minutes
  • Luxury glamping pod with ensuite; watersports and bike hire available
When you stay at Henny Riverside Camping, 10 minutes’ drive from Sudbury in Suffolk, all you need to do is step out of your cosy wooden pod and you’re on the banks of the River Stour, ready for watersports adventures. This small, family-run site also offers bike hire, so there’s plenty to do for active families, but if you’d rather just chill in peaceful countryside, well, there are picnic tables under the trees for moments of quiet contemplation. Sleeping up to two guests, the dog-friendly accommodation is in a cosy wooden pod with a fridge/freezer, toaster and kettle in the kitchen corner, an ensuite and a queen-sized bed with all linens supplied. The comfy seating area overlooks a private terrace accessed by floor-to-ceiling glass doors, and outside there’s all you need for alfresco eating on warmer days. Other handy on-site facilities include a communal barbecue and firepit, and if you don’t fancy doing any catering, there’s a great foodie pub almost right next door, which you need to book at least a day in advance. The owners try their best to be eco-friendly and the site runs off of solar-generated electricity; there may be the occasional time when there is no power. They kindly ask that guests are considerate when using the power supply to ensure there is enough electricity to go around.

Local attractions

You have a huge choice of activities in the area: stroll the Stour Valley Walk from the site, go kayaking and paddleboarding along the river – in fact, guided paddles are available from Stour Kayak (five minutes’ walk). If you fancy having a go at axe throwing or archery, make a beeline for White Dragon Activity Centre (10 minutes’ drive), where you can also try duelling with (plastic) swords. Any animal lovers among you can get your fill at Jimmy’s Farm & Wildlife Park (45 minutes), home to donkeys, ostriches, peacocks, reptiles and even polar bears in well-kept enclosures. In need of more animal therapy? You can feed red pandas and giraffes at Colchester Zoo (half an hour), as well as listen to a range of keeper talks. If you’re also keen to inject a little culture into your Suffolk break, Lavenham (20 minutes) is a ridiculously pretty medieval village full of topsy-turvey half-timbered cottages. You can discover the paintings of Thomas Gainsborough at his namesake house in Sudbury (10 minutes), or tour the grounds and interior of stately Tudor-era Kentwell Hall (20 minutes) – and just in case you need another animal fix, there are lambing weekends at the hall in spring.
