Plenty of space for kids to have fun
Open fields

  • Busy, well-equipped site surrounded by the open Suffolk countryside
  • Half an hour’s drive from Sutton Hoo; 45 minutes from the coast
  • Shop, restaurant, miniature golf, owl sanctuary and play area on site
Looking for a Suffolk spot with lots of open space? The dog-friendly Stonham Barns Holiday Park might hit the sweet spot. Well-placed for the Suffolk and Norfolk countryside and coast, this place is equal parts relaxing and active. The latter is very much helped by the fact that the site is part of the Stonham Barns Golf Park site, which has a whole host of family-friendly (and quite frankly fabulous) attractions… There’s a pirate-themed miniature golf course, a sensory room and a funfair with rides and bumper cars, which should all prove a hit with pint-sized guests. No need to go hunting in the trees: the Suffolk Owl Sanctuary on site has over 80 owls and daily flying displays featuring birds of prey. Catch a comedy or tribute act at the Aspal Theatre, sojourn at the fishing lakes or get creative at the pottery painting studio, all of which are on site. Among these attractions are handy foodie places too. There’s a tearoom if you’re craving an afternoon tea and cake, a restaurant powered by local produce and a village shop selling essential food fare. These pair well with the bar and clubhouse, which has sports screens and celebrity evenings, and a shopping village full of niche independent shops. Along with a showground hosting weekly events like car or dog shows and a Sunday car boot fair, these are all one to two minutes’ walk from the pitches. On the immediate site, however, the facilities include showers, toilets, a washing-up area, disabled facilities, wifi, a kids’ play area and spaces for kids to run around and let off steam. There's also a post office on site which provides cash back and other banking services.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked Good campsite, quiet location, plenty of space to pick a pitch/area which suited us. No restrictions on where non-electric books are pitched, no restriction on space. Given how big the space is and no restriction on space it didn't feel like you were intruding on the space of others camping nearby. Staff all seemed friendly, polite and welcoming. Toilet/shower block in the non-electric area is converted shipping containers but they were always clean, plenty of toilets/urinals/sinks so never a queue. Plenty of water points along the middle of the field. Wifi was good, however a little inconsistent with connection at times. On occasions it would drop and not work, other times it was quick and fast. Nice to see the road into the campsite has been given some attention on the past year since we were there last (stone chippings have been laid), now smoother, less holes. Excellent value for money at £30 a night.

Disliked Grass had clearly been cut when it was long as there was a lot of cut/dried grass laying on top of the field, made picking a relatively clear pitch to put the tent on a little tricky, also a couple of big dips near where we pitched up. As mentioned, toilet and showering facility was clean and tidy, however the shower temperature wasn't adjustable and was scorching hot which wasn't great over the hottest weekend of the year to date. Shower head was also very low, for a 6ft guy trying to wash your hair isn't easy at all. As mentioned, Wifi dropped occasionally.

Electric grass pitch

Liked We visit stonham a lot for days out so we were aware there is lots of activities for the kids there, liked the close proximity of the campsite to the shopping village and activities like crazy golf, football golf etc.

Liked the very warm welcome we recieved when checking in and how accommodating the lady in the office was, she is a credit to the campsite so friendly and helpful!

Like the facilities- the bad reviews of the toilets and shower blocks have put me off booking before (even though we have our own it wasn’t a good sign that the toilets and showers were run down) however surprisingly they were absolutely fine! They were clean and tidy everyday and were kept stocked up with soap and loo roll ! I believe they have been refurbished a little so don’t let previous reviews of the toilets and showers put you off- they are all good :)

Disliked As we arrived we were asked where we would like to pitch- I said close to the park and out the way of everyone as we like a bit of peace and quiet (most campers were huddled down near reception) so we were shown to a lovely spot near the park away from everyone … however within 5 minutes there was a LOT of noise coming from the other side of the park around the corner, we looked over and there was about 6 caravans pitched up in a group making a racket… kids continuously beeping the car horns, parents shouting at kids, we spoke to the lady in the office who confirmed this and we were able to move pitch down the other end where everyone else was (now I know why most people weren’t camped up there)

Now we are not judgemental at all however we come away for a relaxing break and so the kids could comfortable cycle around on their bikes and play happily and the presents of those guests on site gave the campsite a totally different vibe! I felt uneasy and outnumbered and didn’t feel happy letting the kids wonder around like I normally would. I have got to say, the people did keep themselves to themselves are were no bother as such however they are CONSTANTLY up and down every 5 minutes in their cars and vans, driving back and forth all day! Which was a bit of a nuisance in the end.

Also we were looking forward to going to the sports bar in the evening so we could play some pool and darts and let the kids play on the machines however many people told us the group go in there every night and can get a bit rowdy. We didn’t want this to stop us trying to enjoy our Holliday so went there anyway but it was literally packed with the whole group! We were totally outnumbered and it wasn’t a pleasant place to have a drink because of this, we had 1 drink and left.

From the manager: Hello, Thank you for the review. We really appreciate both positive and negative comments. There were members of that particular party on site due to a wedding, and we can confirm that they will be vacating the premises later on this evening/ tomorrow morning.

We obviously do not discriminate against any culture and welcome all types of bookings. We apologise if you felt uneasy and it did impose on your holiday. If any problem had occurred then management and security would have intervened but as you said they kept to themselves.

I hope this does not deter you from staying with us again in the future.

Liked Amenities

Disliked The noise of the generator in the next section of site. No sleep for us. Plus barking dogs that were left in a motorhome for most of the night. Unfortunately we left early. We booked 2 nights but only stayed one. Such as shame as it seems a nice park, but we won't be back to this site.

Liked The local area had plenty to do with shops and cafes and staff very helpful and friendly. Toilet and showers were clean.

Disliked The washing up area was old and due to birds flying in leaving feathers and droppings not pleasent which I personally found unhygienic.
My husband found disable facilities were not very good, difficult to lock toilet and the shower light didn't work on our second day.

Local attractions

With all the attractions on site, it might be a while till you look outwards in search of entertainment. However, when you do, the Suffolk coastline is splendidly within reach, as the site is on the A1120 tourist road. Thorpeness (50 minutes' drive), Aldeburgh (45 minutes) Southwold (50 minutes) deliver on walks, watersports and simple seaside amusements. This is also an excellent place to channel your inner historian and deep dive into the past. Framlingham Castle (20 minutes) is a Norman castle with a walk across the 10-metre-high walls. Sutton Hoo (half an hour) is just as spectacular, with two medieval cemeteries where a ship with Anglo-Saxon pieces was found. Perhaps pretty walks and eating out in restored Victorian buildings next? Snape Maltings (40 minutes) on the river Alde is a splendid setting for strolls and cycles, whether around the riverside loop or joining the Suffolk Coast Cycle Route 41. Take in the scenery on a river boat or sip on something caffeinated in the many independent eating venues in the Victorian buildings.
