Plenty of space for kids to have fun
Open fields

  • Busy, well-equipped site surrounded by the open Suffolk countryside
  • Half an hour’s drive from Sutton Hoo; 45 minutes from the coast
  • Shop, restaurant, miniature golf, owl sanctuary and play area on site
Looking for a Suffolk spot with lots of open space? The dog-friendly Stonham Barns Holiday Park might hit the sweet spot. Well-placed for the Suffolk and Norfolk countryside and coast, this place is equal parts relaxing and active. The latter is very much helped by the fact that the site is part of the Stonham Barns Golf Park site, which has a whole host of family-friendly (and quite frankly fabulous) attractions… There’s a pirate-themed miniature golf course, a sensory room and a funfair with rides and bumper cars, which should all prove a hit with pint-sized guests. No need to go hunting in the trees: the Suffolk Owl Sanctuary on site has over 80 owls and daily flying displays featuring birds of prey. Catch a comedy or tribute act at the Aspal Theatre, sojourn at the fishing lakes or get creative at the pottery painting studio, all of which are on site. Among these attractions are handy foodie places too. There’s a tearoom if you’re craving an afternoon tea and cake, a restaurant powered by local produce and a village shop selling essential food fare. These pair well with the bar and clubhouse, which has sports screens and celebrity evenings, and a shopping village full of niche independent shops. Along with a showground hosting weekly events like car or dog shows and a Sunday car boot fair, these are all one to two minutes’ walk from the pitches. On the immediate site, however, the facilities include showers, toilets, a washing-up area, disabled facilities, wifi, a kids’ play area and spaces for kids to run around and let off steam. There's also a post office on site which provides cash back and other banking services.

What customers say

Reviewers generally praise the friendly and helpful staff, spacious pitches, and the variety of activities and amenities available on-site, including shops, golf, and entertainment. However, a recurring theme is the outdated and often poorly maintained toilet and shower facilities, which some guests found to be dirty and in need of significant refurbishment. Despite these issues, many visitors express a desire to return.

Electric grass pitch

Liked The bus show. Which is the reason we went.

Disliked The false info on pitchup. There is a bar, specialist shops, two cafes and the owl sanctuary. Thats it. The showers are old rusty and dirty,
The staff ( one lovely lady)on the campsite works hard and constant but cant work miracles. This place is a potential gold mine. Just needs investment.

Electric grass pitch

Liked Lovely flat camping field with a very large pitch. Enough toilets and showers. Great shopping village with a good pub that served reasonably priced good food and entertainment. Lovely cafe24 served delicious breakfast. There was a Sunday morning market and events on every weekend.

Disliked Maybe toilets and shower blocks could do with a little updating but they were clean.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked We knew we would arrive late so telephoned the day before. The lady on reception said it wouldn’t be a problem.

The non electric field is so large that space wasn’t a problem. The toilets and showers were very clean with plenty of toilet roll.

The bar prices are very good. We had food from there 2 nights and it was delicious. Staff are all very friendly

Electric grass pitch

Liked Lots to do - golf, fishing, park, shops and a bar/clubhouse. Overall site facilities - we’ve been a few times and enjoyed the campsite.

Disliked We unfortunately had a caravan/van and car show up right next to our tent at 10.30pm with a family with 5 children who then decided to start unpacking everything and this went on until almost 1am. Banging van/car doors, shouting and swearing, lights shining directly into our tent and insettled children crying. This then started again at 3.30am with the adults looking for “rizlas” in their car and banging/beeping the horn. Unfortunately this completely ruined our nights sleep and we were shocked how inconsiderate some people can be. This has now made us think we will probably not be back as we feel there should be more control over who enters the campsite at that time. Fair enough if they were caught in traffic or working or something but to start unpacking everything at that time with so much noise right next to someone else’s tent is extremely selfish. Our son couldn’t sleep at all due to the level of noise and the lights from the van shining into our tent.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked This site is improving every time we go. We love the non electric field, so much space. Very peaceful. Toilets and showers always clean.

Disliked Small play apparatus needs to be blocked off properly. Children were managing to climb on top, even though it was partially fenced off. The gate fence was on its side and if any of the children had fallen I’d imagine they’d have been hurt quite badly.

Liked Nice spacious pitch, plenty of water points, nice and clean.

Disliked It’s advertised that there is a bouncy pillow and a fair on site for the children. This isn’t the case and seems to of been removed.

Local attractions

With all the attractions on site, it might be a while till you look outwards in search of entertainment. However, when you do, the Suffolk coastline is splendidly within reach, as the site is on the A1120 tourist road. Thorpeness (50 minutes' drive), Aldeburgh (45 minutes) Southwold (50 minutes) deliver on walks, watersports and simple seaside amusements. This is also an excellent place to channel your inner historian and deep dive into the past. Framlingham Castle (20 minutes) is a Norman castle with a walk across the 10-metre-high walls. Sutton Hoo (half an hour) is just as spectacular, with two medieval cemeteries where a ship with Anglo-Saxon pieces was found. Perhaps pretty walks and eating out in restored Victorian buildings next? Snape Maltings (40 minutes) on the river Alde is a splendid setting for strolls and cycles, whether around the riverside loop or joining the Suffolk Coast Cycle Route 41. Take in the scenery on a river boat or sip on something caffeinated in the many independent eating venues in the Victorian buildings.
