  • Quiet rural campsite on the track of the old Mid-Suffolk Light Railway
  • In central Suffolk, half an hour's drive from Bury St Edmunds
  • Simple campsite in the grounds of a farm; half a mile from the A140
Take the little ones to stomp through the Suffolk countryside or find a peaceful plot for a catch-up with friends at Brockford Sidings Campsite, a quiet rural site on the trackbed of the old Mid-Suffolk Light Railway. Although no trains have passed this way since the 1950s, it's still possible to see what the line known affectionately as the 'Middy' was like if you walk five minutes over the road to well-preserved Brockford station, where there's a volunteer-run museum and part of the track is still open to visitors. This low-key campsite is set on a large arable farm in central Suffolk in a convenient location half a mile from the A140 and the small village of Wetheringsett. The larger town of Stowmarket and the A14 dual carriageway are a 15-minute drive away to the west, meaning almost all of East Anglia is within easy reach. This is a dog-friendly site that's very close to a good number of cosy country pubs. The nearest are about a mile away, but the site owners recommend bringing a bicycle for the full Suffolk pub crawl experience.

Electric grass pitch

Liked: Well maintained site, clear instructions on arrival and clearly marked pitches.

Disliked: Unfortunately, there are not enough facilities for the number of people the site could potentially hold. These were not always clean, although the site can not be held responsible for dirty animals booking their site.

Electric grass pitch

Liked: Really liked this site, perfect for few chilled nights away, showers etc all clean and showers were lovely and hot. Went to the middy bar just across the road on the Friday eve which was definitely worth a visit. Perfect WiFi on the pitch which is a first for any campsite we have stayed at.

Disliked: Could do with a few more showers and toilets especially if the site was full as 2 isn't really enough for amount of people onside. Not much to do in area within walking distance.

Railway Wagon camping pod (four person)

Liked: We stayed in one of the cabins/huts and is was great, very comfortable beds and plenty of room for sitting and chilling at night. Host was so good, our kids got very cold at night so I asked if he had a spare heater. To my surprise he went out and got us one straight away and left it for us. Was a real game changer as cold at night when we stayed.
Showers and toilets like new and only for use of the people in the cabins. Pictures on the website don’t do it justice.
Great location for mountain biking, we did 2 days at twisted oaks and 2 at Phoenix bike parks, so perfect location. 30 minute drive to both locations

Disliked: As it’s an unmanned site could be difficult to sort issues with noisy users etc.

Electric grass pitch

Liked: Nicely planned site quite small, although only 2 vans on site when we were there. Lovely area and great access from A140, but far enough from this main road so it was quiet. Just down the road from Mid Suffolk Light Railway.
Interesting self check in, a red telephone box. Also separate area for holidays was the train carriages next to what was once a station platform.
Good for visiting Eye, Debenham, Thornham Walks and Diss.
Friendly owner who made a point of coming to chat during our visit.
Easy WiFi - mast on site!

Disliked: At this time of year the ‘outside’ facilities were a bit challenging, although fine in summer when warmer. Toilets and showers (unisex) were quite open to the elements. Although they were very modern and well presented. Showers could do with a curtain to protect clothing and shoes from shower spray while in use.

Railway Carriage 2 bedroom camping pod (eight person)

Liked: We hired the railway carriage for 2 nights for 7 of us to stay. We were really impressed with how clean everything was and had an excellent time!
There was plenty of space for everyone to sleep and the beds were comfy. The "communal space" between the bedrooms is a little small for 8 people, but we all fit in one room to play games, so it was not a problem at all. Plus the weather was beautiful, so we spent a lot of time outside.
Judy was really friendly and helpful. Unfortunately, we arrived quite late (which was completely our fault) but Judy was really lovely and gave some instructions to help us get into the carriage.
Lots of things to do locally - including a lovely little wool shop called Kelly's Craft Corner in the nearby Debenham where we also found a great breakfast. We're only sad that we couldn't stay longer!
There is a great dog park there and dogs are welcome - none of us bought our dog, but we are all dog lovers, so very happy to see the dogs on site! Already planning our next trip to Brockford Sidings campsite (and bringing my dog) !

Electric grass pitch (large)

Liked: Been coming here for 3 years now and never been disappointed.
Large, clean tidy pitches, clean, tidy toilets and showers.
Great for a quite get away or great to bring your children, just pick the right time.
The campsite has a train station theme, other accommodation as well as tents and caravans.
Sun was out which made it even better.

Disliked: Nothing

Local attractions

After taking the kids to learn about old-fashioned travel at the Mid-Suffolk Light Railway Museum (five minutes' walk), take them off for animal encounters, agricultural insights and pony rides at Easton Farm Park (30 minutes' drive), or venture in the other direction towards Framlingham Castle (30 minutes) for family-friendly adventures on a medieval theme. If you liked that, then Henry II's unusual polygonal tower at Orford Castle (50 minutes) should be right up your street too. While here, make time to take in Orford village's pretty traditional cottages and welcoming pubs, or follow the sound of the waves and explore the wild wetlands of Orford Ness National Nature Reserve (50 minutes). More coastal capers await at spectacular spots such as Aldeburgh (55 minutes), Thorpeness (an hour) and Southwold (an hour), all of which are located within the gorgeous Suffolk Coast and Heaths Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Birdlife abounds in this biodiversity haven – your hosts particularly recommend grabbing a pair of binoculars and heading to the well-camouflaged hides at RSPB Minsmere (an hour) and Walberswick (an hour).
