Pitches

  • Grass pitches at an adults-only Suffolk holiday park near Saxmundham
  • A 20-minute drive to Aldeburgh beach; 25 minutes to Orford Castle
  • Entertainment, fishing, a pool and fitness suite on site
Occupying a quiet corner of a Suffolk holiday park 10 minutes' drive from Saxmundham, the spacious grass pitches at the adults-only Lonely Farm provide peace by the bucketload as well as all the advantages of the park’s facilities. And what facilities they are: with not one but two fishing lakes on site, this is a splendid spot for keen anglers, and there’s plenty more to lure you in too. On high-season weekends (March to October), you’ll be kept entertained by free activities and events, and when the weather is behaving, you can get out on the tennis court. Keep up your exercise regime (if you must) in the fitness suite, or swim a few laps of the heated indoor pool. If you prefer more sedate pursuits, you can simply have a wander along the park’s woodland walk. Guests staying on the pitches at Lonely Farm also have access to electric hook-ups, shower and toilet blocks, waste disposal points and fresh water points.

Electric grass touring caravan pitch

Liked: Errrr, the grass was green.

Disliked: I have never had an experience quite as bad. I was looking at booking for Lonely Farm but on Pitchup the pitch sizes were only 6m long and 6m wide, not big enough for any touring caravan outfit. I wanted to call to double check this, but the phone number provided was invalid. After some super-sleuthing and several dead ends, I managed to get through to someone to do with Carlton Meres who was very professional and informed me they were all grass pitches so size would not be an issue. I went ahead and booked.
When it came to hitch our new caravan, we realised we needed an electric adaptor from van to car (our fault) but this was unfortunately at 4pm, on Pitchup it stated you cannot check in after 5pm but can call to advise of a later check in requirement.
So I tried every number I could find and could not get through to anyone, anywhere. After repeated attempts at calling, we were forced to give up and did not dare travel to the site in the fear we would not be able to get on the site and have to turn around and go home.
The next morning I attempted several calls and kept getting put through to the wrong place. The lady I did eventually speak to was empathetic and realised that every time she tried to transfer my call to someone to do with Lonely Farm, I was getting bounced back to her. So she was great and said she would email them to tell them of our issue.
Half an hour later I got a call from someone purporting to be from Lonely Farm who was incredibly passive aggressive in her manner. I advised her of the whole situation, she attributed the blame to Pitchup and said "we are not them", to which I replied "I know that but you use them for your booking system and regardless of that, I've had absolutely no luck in getting through to you". She couldn't reply to that and instead informed us that we were fine to attend the second night of our two night booking and that we were on pitch 3.
Off we went! Not feeling hopeful but wanting some enjoyment from our booking fee.
We turned up to no reception being evident, so took it upon ourselves to find our allocated pitch.....which was taken by another van.
I went to try again to find reception, which on the site map was apparently the wooden cabin.
A person saw me looking around and turned off their lights rather than coming to the door.
On the site map it gave a Warden number. This did not even ring but went straight through to voicemail several times. I eventually left a message to say that we were on site, had picked another pitch and to call back.
I'm sure you won't be shocked to read that we did NOT get a call back.

The site facilities are rudimental at best, need serious updating and unclean.

The alleged pool and gym is actually not on site as advertised on Pitchup, but actually down the road at further cost.

We were kept awake by vehicles thundering down the drive to the barn they use as a laundry and stock room for their main site elsewhere.

I actually can't quite believe how terrible it all was. So thanks for that.

Electric grass tent pitch

Liked: The hot showers

Disliked: The corporate capitalist greed of the owners of Lonely farm who own the huge Carlton Meres holiday park complex. They wacked the nightly tent pitch up from £8 a night to £23 per night without any explanation which is a complete extortionate rip off and totally unacceptable. Do they want customers or not ?

Electric grass motorhome pitch

Liked: Liked the peaceful site, with clean toilets and showers. Showers with hot water. Several drinking water points. Separate grassed places for tents, caravans and mobilehomes/ campervans; the latter having concrete strips for hardstanding.
Footpaths for walks straight from site. RSPB sites and coastal sites in easy reach. Saxmundham has Tesco and Waitrose ( which has easier parking for campervan/ mobilehome.)

Disliked: If the non functioning soap dispenser, that juts out over the sink,
could be removed in the lady's toilet area; that would make it less awkward when trying to clean teeth.

Local attractions

For days at the beach, take to the coast at Aldeburgh (20 minutes’ drive) and treat yourself to fish and chips, or head to cute little Southwold (25 minutes) for retro amusements at the Under the Pier Show on the pier. From there, hop on the ferry across the River Blyth to Walberswick (25 minutes) for a drink in the pub or to spot wading birds among its heathlands and marshes. Other day trips that should bring a smile to your faces include all the animal encounters at Jimmy’s Farm and Wildlife Park (40 minutes), Banham Zoological Gardens (an hour) for its penguins and sea lions, or the truck safaris across the savannah at Africa Alive Zoological Reserve (half an hour). Pleasurewood Hills Family Theme Park (45 minutes) is another good bet, with water rides and rollercoasters galore. Mix things up a bit by introducing some history into your lives: at Framlingham Castle (15 minutes) you can walk the defence walls, and at Orford Castle (25 minutes) there are displays of local Roman finds and audio tours of the castle’s tangle of passageways.
