  • Suffolk farm campsite with smashing wheat-field views
  • A 20-minute drive to Jimmy’s Farm and Wildlife Park, and 30 to Ipswich
  • Peaceful pitches with a fishing lake on site; pub 10 minutes’ walk
Looking to catch some carp on your stint in Suffolk? Situated on a quiet corner of a farm near Ipswich, Wheathill Campsite has a small fishing lake – a fab introduction to fishing for kids as there are lots of carp – right next to its camping pitches. This peaceful field is sheltered by trees and hedging, and there are wonderful views over the valley and wheat fields from the hillside. The shower facilities are spacious and clean, with wheelchair accessibility and a baby-changing mat, and there’s drinking water on site, but otherwise you’re pretty much left to your own devices. Even if you’re not an avid angler, there’s still plenty to do. Get the walking boots on and explore the area's footpaths, which can be accessed from the site through the woods. Middle Wood (20 minutes’ walk) and Bonny Wood (40 minutes) are close by, with a diverse variety of natural habitats – but please remember to stick to the footpaths at all times. Another walk from the site may well lead to the pub – families, dogs and muddy boots are all welcome at the local (10 minutes’ walk), which also doubles as a fish and chip shop, and there’s another dog-friendly pub in the next village of Somersham (five minutes’ drive) too, currently open from Thursday to Sunday. If you’d rather go down the self-catering route, you can pick up supplies in Needham Market (10 minutes), a small market town with an array of handy shops – and a park where kids can feed the ducks. For fishing supplies, there's a great tackle shop 15 minutes away in Great Blakenham.

The Hive shepherd's hut (no pets)

Liked: Such a peaceful place. Away from traffic noise and the lake is calming and picturesque as is the surrounding countryside.
My father moved the Hive. Clean and well organized. A cute little place.

Disliked: Make sure to take everything you need along with you. Around a 10 minute drive to the local village store which isn’t huge. Probably closer to 20 minutes each way to a supermarket.

From the manager: Thankyou for your review and recommendation. We are hoping to install some vending machines which will save a trip to the shop.
Although the village shop is small it holds some lovely local treats and those essential items.

Electric grass and gravel touring pitch

Liked: Clean facilities and a fantastic view from our pitch over the suffolk countryside. Will require leveling blocks. Having the facility if using a firepit in the evenings was a lovely bonus.

Disliked: Driving in from the Needham Market direction the site is not signposted adequately.

From the manager: Thanks for your comments and feedback, We will look into better signage to reach the site.

Electric grass and gravel touring pitch

Liked: What a lovely little site the owners take pride in there site and it shows everything was spotless and clean the showers were pipping hot big plus in my book toilets so clean and smell clean as well, bins clearly labelled washing up facilities brilliant there is washing up liquid towels etc,the views are stunning very rural it’s a little gem of a camp site, if you like fishing, wish I had packed a rod, got a little lake well stocked with carp and Rudd and roach or that’s what it looked like fire pits available if needed. We have already booked to go again.

From the manager: Thankyou for your lovely review.
We do take pride in our little site and do our best to maintain and keep it clean for our customers so it’s great to be appreciated :)

The lake is full of Carp with a few Tench & Bream so definitely bring your rod on your next visit.

Look forward to welcoming you back

Electric grass and gravel touring pitch

Liked: Lovely location, lovely views. Toilets and showers were very clean. site was clean. Small site.

Disliked: Hardstanding pitches were small, meaning you have to walk on muddy ground to get into campervan when the weather isn't good.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thankyou for your comments and feedback. We have the grass beside the gravel area to allow for awnings/tents etc but it does get a little muddy in the winter months.
Glad you enjoyed yourselves stay

Electric grass and gravel touring pitch

Liked: Beautiful location, spotlessly clean, fabulous dog walks. Little extras, such as providing shower gel, washing up liquid, cloths and tea towels were really appreciated. Thanks for a super stay

Disliked: Not a dislike, just a comment. Larger gravel area would have helped as it was particularly muddy around the pitch. But in no way did it spoil our stay.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thankyou for your lovely comments. Glad you enjoyed your stay, the dog walks and our little extras.
We understand your comment regarding the gravel area but it’s good to have some grass for tents and awnings.
Look forward to welcoming you back again

Electric grass and gravel touring pitch

Liked: Lovely setting with great views lots of useful information good recycling very clean toilets

Disliked: Pitch was very out of level both ways and could not get level with ramps water fill up was very slow overpriced for what you got compared with other sites offering fully serviced pitches for less

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for your comments and feedback. Levelling the pitches are in our to do list for this winter and the new larger water pipe is going in this week which will make the flow quicker.

We are sorry to hear you feel we are overpriced for your party size. We are a very small site and therefore chose to have a flat rate.
This does include

*Camping/touring pitch for up to 4 people
*Electric
*Clean, maintained toilet and shower facilities including soap and toilet roll
*Wash up area including hot water, washing up liquid, sponges, t-towels & bin liners
*Baby changing unit
*Up to 4 dogs
*Tent boxes
*Additional tents|bivvys|awnings

Through our market research we found that in comparison to other sites which charge additionally per person and for these additional amenities our prices are often lower.

We do appreciate your feedback, it is vital for us to continue to improve our customer satisfaction. We look forward to welcoming you back in the future.

Liked: EVERYTHING!! Firstly I would like to say that Sarah ( owner / manager ) keeps this beautiful place spotless … the toilets and showers sparkled with how clean there were … every morning Sarah sweeps cleans and checks everything is perfect and you are left with this amazing scenery to enjoy whilst watching people fish in the lake … wonderful walks to go on ( and you can end up in the local pub ) The Lime Burners enjoy a pint and a gorgeous lunch … 10/10 from us .. Local attractions

If you’ve got kids in tow, treat them to encounters with ridiculously cute goats and sheep at Baylham House Rare Breeds Farm (15 minutes’ drive) and if the weather’s good, there are lots of spots for picnics there too. Jimmy’s Farm and Wildlife Park (20 minutes) is another sure-fire hit with the kids, with anteater handling and donkey-grooming sessions, while you can all try the inflatable obstacle course at Alton Water Sports Centre (half an hour), or maybe have a go at dinghy sailing. Keen to get some more casting practice in? Suffolk Water Park (10 minutes) has a large fishing lake and a bait shop, plus a waterfront café, a nine-hole golf course and putting green for any none-fishers among you. For a big night out, hit Ipswich Waterfront (half an hour) with its riverside bars and bistros, and then catch a concert or an art exhibition at St Peter's by the Waterfront (20 minutes), in a former church.
