  • Horsebox kitchen and private bathrooms; pub five minutes’ walk
Can’t decide whether to holiday near Constable Country or the Suffolk coast? No need to make such decisions anymore, as a stay at The Suffolk Steel House and Glamping puts you close to both. Three generations of a family have got together here to produce a small and luxurious bell-tent campsite in half an acre of peaceful Suffolk countryside near Ipswich. Each adults-only tent is kitted out with a king-size bed and sprung mattress for a decent night’s sleep. Outside there’s a private dining area for barbecues, and a shared kitchen is nattily fitted into a converted 1950s horse box, where cooking basics are supplied along with a washing-up area. Bathrooms are private, with one dedicated to each tent, and housed in a Monty Don-inspired ‘steel house’ with handy facilities including hot and cold running water, enclosed showers and flushing loos. The setting is on the edge of the pretty village of Tattingstone, with a couple of pubs for sampling local brews as well as shops where you can replenish barbecue stocks. If you’d like to explore further afield in gorgeous rural Suffolk, each bell tent guest has access to a vintage bicycle for the duration of their stay.

Local attractions

Keen to be out in the fresh air? There are several footpaths from the pitches leading to views of Tattingstone village and Alton Water, while leisure facilities at Alton Water Sports Centre (15 minutes’ drive) include windsurfing, kayaking and paddleboarding for more adventurous types. You could also hop on your vintage bike to cycle through Tattingstone and on to the cute village of East Bergholt (half an hour by bike), the birthplace of landscape artist John Constable in 1776. From there it’s an easy step to Flatford Mill (40 minutes), where he painted his famous ‘The Haywain’, and a choice of cycling paths and walking routes running alongside the River Stour. For a day of old-world seaside fun, visit Felixstowe (25 minutes) for its sand and shingle beaches and a fish-and-chip feast on the pier. Standing on the River Deben, waterfront Woodbridge (20 minutes) has Georgian architecture and lots of cosy pubs, while ancient, half-timbered Lavenham rewards a visit for its indie shops.

The Stour bell tent

Liked: A really beautiful place to stay, with all mod cons covered, from wifi to washing up!

Christabel was really helpful, providing directions to the secret beach and ensuring we had everything we needed - and then letting us get on with it!

The campsite is peaceful and scenic, the tent, kitchen and bathrooms were spotlessly clean and the bed was very comfortable!

The Orwell bell tent

Liked: The peace and quiet. It’s a very peaceful site. Our own shower block was a real treat with a lovely hot shower. The little kitchen was well stocked and the tea tent was a great place to sit and relax.
