  • Friendly, simple site half a mile from pubs in the village of Barrow
  • In the grounds of a fitness centre with a gym on site
  • Couple of minutes' walk to archery, horse riding and assault course
Ready for action? Fab four-acre Church View Campsite is attached to a well-established fitness centre and event space in the little village of Barrow, 15 minutes’ drive from Bury St Edmunds. Fitness fans, active types and those who just want to have a chuckle at their mates trying to scale sizeable obstacles should all have a whale of a time at this place. The on-site gym’s available to guests on a pay as you go basis; if you’d rather work out in the open, drop in next door to the assault course at The Playground, fire a few arrows at the archery club or wander up the road to the local riding stables. There are escape rooms and a miniature golf course should you fancy something different too. After all this activity, it's worth bearing in mind that (as long as you’re not on some sort of self-inflicted bootcamp) you can reward your efforts with something tasty from the chippy, café or pubs 10 minutes’ stroll away. The site also has its very own bar and café for even easier eats. Or if it’s all too much, just stay put for an evening’s cookout over a barbecue (sometimes with a spectacular sunset to boot – fingers crossed). There's also a small on-site licensed café-bar serving snacks and light bites, with a lovely bamboo garden area where you can watch the world go by with a pint or some coffee and cake.

Electric grass pitch

Liked: A great campsite- very family friendly with small play area, table tennis table and some animals. It's linked to a crazy golf, gym and escape room.
The facilities are good: hot showers with plenty of space, plenty of toilets, washing up area, water taps, fire pits to hire....a really great place.

Electric grass pitch

Liked: Loved this site! Super friendly staff, facilities were really good and always working. Lots of things for kids to do. Totally worth staying here, and will definately come back again.

Disliked: Not a dislike as such, more just something to note. The entrance is a bit steep so if you have a setup with low ground clearance it might catch, but otherwise nothing else

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thanks for the review and so glad you had a good stay.
You are right about the entrance being steep, usually only catches very low back ends or caravans with very long back ends. We do have another entrance that can be used by prior arrangement.

We had a great time at the site, calm, peaceful and easy to access.

Electric hardstanding and grass motorhome pitch (water hook-up)

Liked: Lovely site with a homely feel. Pitches well sized and good facilities on the pitch and throughout the site.
Lots of activities available and even animals on site (not free roam as far as I could tell).

Disliked: Nothing

From the manager: Thanks and glad you enjoyed our site.
When bird flu is not restricting them we do like to let our half a dozen hens free range and they are very happy to interact especially with the children. BUT we are equally as happy to pop them away if anyone is not keen on birds.

Loved it!

Non-electric grass tent, campervan or trailer tent pitch

Liked: I loved this place! So many other sites are either very rustic with minimal amenities or very busy/loud/expensive, but this strikes the right balance for me. Church View has all the amenities I could want (hot water, washing up station, plenty of toilets and showers, picnic table at each site, charging points, ice pack freezing, drinking water, and a little play area for kids). Yet, in spite of having all this, the site feels fairly small and it was very quiet at night. The pitch was flat, with soft grass, and somehow the whole site seemed pretty dry in spite of pouring rain shortly before our arrival (must have excellent drainage!). The site was clean and very well thought out. I wonder if it was purposeful to put the play area near to, and within sight of, the washing up station? Brilliant! This really made my life easier, as I was camping alone with a three year old, and without the play area I probably would have needed to stop and chase him down every minute or so while trying to wash dishes! Oh, and the owners were really friendly too.

I think this is probably the ideal spot for a first camping trip with children (in my case, I’ve camped with my son, but this was the first time I camped alone with him). My son enjoyed seeing the hens and guinea pigs. I took him in the buggy for the 10-15 min walk into Barrow, which was a pleasant walk along a quiet road with pavements. There he played at the good-sized playground behind the village hall and then we had lunch at a pub. The next day we drove 15 min to the Ickworth National Trust site. We had enough to do for our 48ish hour trip, and it was a lovely stay!

Disliked: Not really a dislike, but I’d suggest putting a sign at the gym entrance saying it’s also the entrance to the indoor toilets. I was looking to see what indoor space was available to take a break from the cold (the indoor space has a little lobby with a small sofa and vending machine). I wandered around looking for quite a while, because I didn’t think that door could possibly be the right place to enter, since it’s clearly marked as the gym entrance and has a gym reception desk just inside. Also the advert probably should be updated to let guests know that gym use is for an additional cost (not included).

Finally, I’d suggest changes to the lighting. Turning off the lights a bit earlier would be nice - I was worried they’d keep my three year old awake until they were turned off (at 10:15) but bedtime actually went fine. I do wish I’d been able to show him a better view of the stars, though, which were glorious after the lights were off. Dimmer lights that more closely follow the road to the loos would probably be more helpful (maybe getting a few of those solar powered ones with timers on posts?) But maybe it’s just me - I love dark and stargazing while camping!

Electric grass pitch (water hook-up)

Liked: Lovely little campsite, not too big, cafe on site, plenty to do around too but also nice and peaceful. These small sites are much friendlier than large ones and always better value

Electric hardstanding and grass motorhome pitch (water hook-up)

Liked: Plenty to do on site, the café was a nice touch and the burgers were excellent. Nice to see some animal life on site, not everyones cup of tea but children love it, as they did the play area.

Disliked: The washing facilities seemed a bit haphazard. Certainly clean enough but only 1 dedicated shower each for M & F with others opening straight out on to common areas. Only one handwashing facility for 3 toilets and a urinal in the mens area which was suboptimal and no means of drying hands outside the one shower room.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: You must have missed our separate indoor shower facilities which have two men's and two ladies showers.
The numbers of showers, toilets and wash hand basins are such that queues don't usually develop. In the ladies there are two sinks for 4 toilets.
Our facilities are basic and we do not advertise otherwise

Electric grass pitch (water hook-up)

Liked: It was quiet which was very important to us. The play area was a hit with the children as were the animals especially the chickens. Fire pits were a plus and the sunsets were beautiful. Staff also seemed friendly.

Disliked: I didn’t realise the obstacle course etc were ran by a different company. It was really expensive so we didn’t bother. The gym was also a reason I booked but seemed a right faff with getting a fob so also didn’t bother. The camp is tired, facilities were a little too ‘rustic’ for my liking but that’s personal taste, they seemed clean enough. I couldn’t work out why they pitched everyone so close to each other when there was so much space? Seemed a little odd to me, I’d have spread everyone out a little to give more space.

From the manager: Thanks for the review - I hope the following will help future guests.
The assault course is a business next door to us, very popular with guests and with a 10% discount for campers if you ask reception for discount codes for this and for other activities .
The gym is a full members gym which has a fob entry system so this needs to be arranged. It is just a case of calling the gym manager who will arrange. I offered to get the manager to drop by the pitch for this guest but they refused and advised of the phone number which they decided not to use. Other campers at the same time accessed the gym with no problem.
We are rustic and some of our facilities are tired, we keep them clean and there is plenty of hot water. Don't come here expecting shiny new facilities. We update as we can.
Our pitches are some of the biggest you will find, but spacing can be down to bookings around your booking in the diary.
It just so happened that the type of pitch booked by this guest was well booked out and other types were not. We do when possible make changes to give everyone more space and you are always welcome to speak to us on arrival about where you are sited. It is not always possible during school holidays to make easy changes.

Local attractions

Up for a challenge? The Playground, just next door, has a huge assault course to tackle, along with a collection of more kid-friendly obstacles. If that’s given you an appetite for such antics, follow up with a zip through the trees on the canopy trails at Go Ape, half an hour away by car. If that’s not really your style, perhaps trot up the road from the site to Barrow Hall Stables for riding lessons, countryside hacks and summer-hols activity days that should please pony-mad nippers. Want to see the gee-gees going full pelt? The famed racecourse at Newmarket is a 15-minute drive away. Too much adrenaline? Calmer times are around too – perhaps in the cafés, gardens and abbey of Bury St Edmunds, or with a wander through the stunning gardens at Ickworth (even if you’re not usually one for a stately home, this one’s worth a visit – if only to marvel at its perfectly round Georgian rotunda building). Both are about 15 minutes away by car. The pretty half-timbered houses of Lavenham (half an hour away) are worth a look too.
