  • Off-grid and adults-only lakeside cabin on a private island in Suffolk
  • The Broads National Park and Southwold both about half an hour’s drive
  • Exclusive use of lake and meadow; walking trails run around the farm
Looking for something rather special? How about your own private island, lake and meadow? The glamping offering at Rookery Meadow, 10 minutes’ drive from Harleston in Suffolk, is called Little Island Retreat – and it’s just the place for a fabulous romantic getaway in a one-of-a-kind setting. Park outside the meadow, follow the path through the wildflowers and past ancient oaks, cross the bridge and you’ll be in your own little cabin for two, with no neighbours… apart from the horses in the next meadow and the wildlife that lives around the two-acre lake. Inside the wooden cabin are a king-size bed plus lots of little extra touches like games, a bean bag, LED lanterns and candles. Outside, the deck has seating, a barbecue, a cool box and various bits of cookware for chilled-out evenings taking in the stunning views over the water. The cabin itself is off grid, but you’ll have an eco toilet just next door, and a short walk takes you to the shower (with towels and eco-friendly toiletries), flushing loo and a utility room with a fridge, plug sockets and USB charging points. How you spend your time here is totally up to you – there are yoga sessions on offer from qualified instructor Gem, or you might like to settle on your deck to watch the sunset while owls and kestrels soar overhead.

Little Island Retreat cabin

Liked: Stayed 3 nights at the Little Island Retreat for a little break to get away from everything. What a place, literally cannot fault anything. You have the retreat and the entire lake to yourself, with Shane and Wayne the lovely ducks to keep you company. You're a field away from the main house so you really do feel totally on your own. We were blessed with sunny weather and it was just so quiet, relaxing and tranquil. We were also allowed to take our kayaks on the lake.
The lodge itself is very comfortable with everything you need for cooking on the BBQ and sitting outside on the decking of an evening (blankets, mozzy traps, plates/pans/cutlery), lanterns, a reservoir with plenty of drinking water and a novel compost toilet. 3 minutes walk across the field takes you to the farmyard where you have you're own bathroom/washing up room with electric and hot water etc. We also had a great time playing ping pong and darts in the games room.
We will miss Shane and Wayne welcoming us of a morning and chilling out with us in the evenings!

Disliked: There is nothing to dislike about this place

Little Island Retreat cabin

Liked: We couldn’t have asked for a better stay at Rob’s little island retreat! We were incredibly lucky with the weather so were able to make full use of the new jetty Rob had built prior to our stay. A highlight for us definitely included the friendly pair of ducks (Shayne and Wayne) whom Rob warned us were sure to steal our hearts! The setting is pure paradise as you are truly immersed in the gorgeous east Anglian countryside surrounded by ancient oak trees, you will be sure to not want to leave after a taste of this little slice of heaven!

Little Island Retreat cabin

Liked: Amazing place for solitude. No wifi. No TV. Comfortable bed and views with a view. Shane and Wayne the 2 ducks will keep you entertained! Nothing is too much trouble and Rob is close by.

Disliked: Not much to add apart from wet footwear as the grass was very wet due to the rain and dew the next morning. We should have remembered our wellies. The walk to the Shower block was a bit further than we thought but it's all fresh air so just go prepared with footwear.

Local attractions

There’s much to explore near Little Island Retreat on the Norfolk/Suffolk border – long-distance walking routes Boudicca’s Way and Angles Way actually pass across the farmland. It’s also half an hour’s walk to the evocative ruins of South Elmham Minster, a flint-built church thought to date from the seventh century. If you’d rather do your exploring on water, Beccles (25 minutes’ drive) sits pretty on the River Waveney and is the place for hiring boats to chug off down the broad – otherwise you can try your luck by canoe, kayak or paddleboard. Seaside Southwold (half an hour) is an excellent pick for beach days or eating fish and chips on the pier. Set waterside, St Peter’s Brewery (five minutes) is open for tastings, and you can also tour the vines at Flint Vineyard (15 minutes) before sampling the vintages. When you’re feeling adventurous, ride a camel at Camel Park Oasis (15 minutes). Not feeling that vibe? Have a potter around the tropical plantings at gorgeous Henstead Exotic Gardens (25 minutes, contact for opening times).
