  • Family-friendly Norfolk site in the grounds of the Sandringham Estate
  • King’s Lynn 20 minutes’ drive; Blakeney Point 45 minutes
  • Food shop and restaurant; playground; direct access to woodland trails
You know how King Charles III likes to retreat to the rural quiet of Sandringham Estate? Well, it might be time to take a leaf out of the monarch’s book and stay at Sandringham Pop-Up Campsite, which sits in the grounds of the renowned Norfolk royal estate. And if that doesn’t already feel suitably posh and exclusive (though surely it does…), between April and October guests have access to selected areas of historic Sandringham House, along with its spectacular gardens and parkland. In addition to an adventure playground, the site has a number of woodland walking and cycling paths; if that doesn’t appeal to your competitive spirit, make sure to be here on a Saturday morning, when you can take part in the weekly five-kilometre park run. As for cycling, the flat terrain of the Sandringham Estate makes it an easy and family-friendly option. National Cycle Network Route 1 runs right through Sandringham, linking Snettisham (10 minutes’ drive), where a quick diversion takes you to a coastal nature reserve for a spot of birdwatching, to King’s Lynn (20 minutes), where the route runs along a disused railway line. Need to stock up on provisions? The on-site shop (in the visitors’ centre) sells a wide selection of local produce, much of which also finds its way in the delicious meals served at the restaurant. For anything else, there is a farmers’ market less than a mile away, just off the B1440 (15 minutes’ walk) or you can head into Dersingham (five minutes’ drive), where there are also more dining options.

Local attractions

In King’s Lynn (20 minutes’ drive), check out the Victorian smokehouse at the True’s Yard Fisherfolk Museum, which occupies an old fisherman’s cottage. There’s more local heritage at Stories of Lynn - Museum and Old Gaol Cells, where you can learn about the town’s trading heyday in the Middle Ages and admire the King John Cup, a bejewelled drinking vessel. Watatunga Wildlife Reserve (25 minutes) – the name sounds exotic, but this safari park is right here in western Norfolk, and it has free-roaming herds of deer, antelope and water buffalo, plus assorted birds. Meanwhile, the sand dunes at Blakeney Point (45 minutes) are home to a large colony of grey seals. With its distinctive onion dome-topped turrets, National Trust - Blickling Estate (50 minutes) is a red-brick Jacobean mansion. Stroll around the elegant formal gardens and extensive parkland, then visit the RAF Oulton Museum, in the air crew’s former barracks.
