  • A few miles from Wisbech in Cambridgeshire
  • Communal firepit area and bacon/sausages for sale
Ever been to a site which is so good you just want to keep it under wraps? Wend your stealthy way to exceedingly popular The Secret Garden Touring Park in Cambridgeshire’s Fenlands, with accommodation in a green countryside setting within a two-acre garden. You'll spy all sorts of little touches that keep guests coming back: much like the local and migrant wildlife regularly flutters to the flowers and shrubs of the garden, all meticulously developed over years by owners Neil and Lesley to draw in nearby birds, butterflies and beasts like jays, woodpeckers, stoats and hares. The site also has a couple of Gloucester Old Spot pigs. Other little touches at The Secret Garden include an on-site distillery, a communal firepit area, a shop with locally made bacon and sausages, and a ‘hobbit hill’ for the kids to hide out in. All guests have access to two modern shower and toilet blocks, and the kitchen with laundry facilities. Entertainment is available on weekends.

Electric grass pitch

Liked: Cleanliness of the facilities, the quirkiness of the place, the privacy our pitch provided us with, and the little pockets of nature that interspersed the various pitches. Breakfast at the Potting Shed was just lovely, and there was plenty of opportunity to walk our dog. Also, the fire pits for those wanting to use them, and the fact that there's a shop, occasional concerts, and the place is dog friendly.

Electric grass pitch

Liked: Ease of check in - as in no check in !
Pitches- individual private .

Disliked: Busy pub area due to evening entertainment - loads of outside bookings so no where to sit - would have stayed at the pub longer but didn’t due to that.
Lady at breakfast was not overly friendly
Shower blocks would be overwhelmed in busy periods

Electric grass pitch

Liked: Nice secluded pitches with water and electricity. Showers were nice although a bit tired looking. The Potting shed is a great asset, in fact our whole experience would have been very different without the pub to go to, as there is nothing else within walkable distance from the site. The shop was adequate and sold useful amenities.

Disliked: Pitches were quite muddy - no fault of the site owners, but maybe having a couple of options with gravel would be nice. One guy with a caravan got stuck and had to be pulled out by tractor, absolutely ruined the pitch.

From the manager: Hi Gaynor,
Many Thanks for your comments, yes we did have significant issues in the last few weeks of our 2024 season, in fact right from the start of our season in March. It's been the wettest winter I can ever remember here (and that’s a long time😊!). It has been problematic and has put us behind on maintenance for fear of damaging the ground with machinery, unfortunately such conditions on grass pitches do take their toll everywhere, but given 24 hrs with no rain it is amazing how different it can be! We are a little remote, but actually just ½ hr walk to town centre. I believe the idea of using pea gravel on pitches may be a good option for us to trial on some pitches.
Many Thanks
Lesley and Neil – and Secret Garden team

Electric grass pitch

Liked: Great pub on site, beautiful log burner made it feel warm and inviting. Entertainment venue sounded great. Food available and a good on site shop.

Disliked: Getting to the touring pitches, even for seasoned carriers it's quite daunting. Firstly you have to use the turning circle which for us was easy enough but family had a larger tow vehicle meaning they couldn't turn in one maneuver. It looked like some relatively small access changes could be made that would make a big difference.
Then getting down to the pitches was extremely tight due to the hedges and trees. I don't really think it's designed for tourers to be honest. Once onto the pitch it was nice and level. Shower block good with underfloor heating which was a lovely treat.
On leaving the site you have to navigate the turning circle once again but the opposite way round. Again if the approach was slightly altered this would make leaving much easier.

From the manager: Thank you for your comments, we're pleased you enjoyed your stay with us and enjoyed our cozy pub and underfloor heating in the showers - a treat in the autumnal weather!
As you can imagine, we have had hundreds of tourers visit us and there is good reason why our entrance is designed as it is. The roundabout system in the main yard is based on highways design and dimensions for a mini roundabout – so we are no different than the public highways and if approached correctly it is easy to use with the largest of touring vans.
The route from the main yard into the garden touring pitches is also designed this way for very good reason. Our garden modelled site is not like any other traditional campsite and our focus is for a natural playground for families and children to enjoy. Yes, we could redesign to a straight route into the site rather than one winding through the tree lined road – but experience shows us that there are people who will not respect a 5mph speed limit whatever you do. So it is for this reason that the route into the sites are designed as they are, and even with a large unit very simple if drivers are slow and focused on their driving. For us a simple subliminal solution to an all too often common problem!
Many Thanks
Neil / Lesley & Team

Electric grass pitch

Liked: The staff, the site& the public areas such as the pub were great.Unfortunately we couldn't book for the shows as sold out.

Disliked: That we didn’t have anywhere within walking distance to visit.A town, village, local attractions etc. This is no reflection on the site but we don’t always want to get in the car.

Local attractions

Wisbech, Cambridgeshire’s biggest town, is two and a half miles away and has a good selection of museums, shops and Georgian architecture to view (Dickens fans might recognise some of the town’s buildings from the Beeb’s adaptation of David Copperfield from 1999). Octavia Hill's birthplace house and museum, celebrating the many good deeds of this Wisbech woman, is also in the town, or you could reach heady heights at the Fenland and North Norfolk Aviation Museum to see aircraft and displays from across the ages. The National Trust’s Peckover House in Wisbech has great gardens (and croquet on the lawn), as does local brewery Elwood’s, with four acres of greenery as well as a maze to get lost in. Both the RSPB reserve at Ouse Washes in Manea and the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust at Welney in Norfolk are within 15–20 miles if your whistle has been whetted by the wildlife watching on site at The Secret Garden; take a trip around the lakes of the Fens or east to the Norfolk Broads for more species spotting from boat and shore. Within driving distance for day trips you can also reach Cambridge and Ely to the south, Norwich to the east and the scenic seaside towns of Hunstanton, Wells-next-the-Sea and Sandringham to the north, or drive a little further to reach Skegness and Great Yarmouth.
