Set your sights on a stay in a real gypsy caravan? Then you’ll be pleased to learn about Guyhirn Accommodation, 10 minutes’ drive from the shops and bars of Wisbech in Cambridgeshire. Introducing Ruby Rose, a genuine, bow-top ‘vardo’ horse-drawn wagon, painted red with gold motifs and guaranteed to bring out the romantic in you with its traditional styling and cosy ambiance. The caravan contains a standard-length mattress on a sleeping platform accessed by steps; underneath is storage and a seating area. The 21st century has not been forgotten, however. Your accommodation is flanked by two shepherd’s huts for your exclusive use, one containing a rather swish, tiled bathroom with a rainfall shower, and the other kitted out with a kitchen corner plus a seating-and-dining area. Electric underfloor heating will keep you comfy in all three units, while other mod cons include high-speed wifi and plenty of sockets to recharge all your devices. And when it comes to kicking back and relaxing completely, you can enjoy a long soak in the exclusive-use indoor hot tub.

Local attractions

The wildlife lovers among you can go on buggy safaris to see herds of wild buffalo and free-roaming antelope at Watatunga Wildlife Reserve, or embark on guided nature walks at Church Farm in Stow Bardolph (both half an hour’s drive) to learn about foraging for fungi. Fancy some outdoor activity? Call up your inner Robin Hood and fly a few arrows at Grey Goose Archery and Axes (half an hour), where you can also fling spears and axes (safely) around. If the weather isn’t playing ball, head for the laser-tag games at Laserforce or go ten-pin bowling at Hollywood Bowl Peterborough (both 25 minutes), where you can also play snooker and slots. When more cultural pursuits are called for, Peckover House and Garden (10 minutes) offers pre-booked tours of a stately Georgian mansion and meanders around a prettily planted garden. There’s a handsome moated castle complete with priest holes at Oxburgh Estate (40 minutes), and medieval St George’s Guildhall (half an hour) hosts a 15th-century theatre under a historic vaulted ceiling.
