Ssssh, don’t let the kids get wind of it, but if you stay at Knowle Donkey Sanctuary Certificated Location, a Caravan and Motorhome Club members-only campsite on a farm 10 minutes’ drive from Solihull in the West Midlands, they’ll get to spend lots of time sharing cuddles with the furry residents at the namesake sanctuary. Along with donkey hugs, at this site (new in 2024 and still maturing; all the basics are in place, including water, Elsan points, recycling and visitor information), you also get neatly maintained gravel and grass pitches with countryside views. There’s also a dedicated dog run, so Fido can join you on your adventures, and free-range eggs and honey from the farm’s hives are for sale on site too (that’s breakfast taken care of then). Barbecues are allowed at the pitches, and there are supermarkets in Knowle and Dorridge (both five minutes’ drive) for picking up provisions; Solihull (10 minutes) is the nearest place for major shopping sprees. If you don’t fancy cooking alfresco, there’s a food pub adjacent to the Birmingham Canal about five minutes’ walk away. The site couldn’t be easier to get to, being less than 10 minutes from Junction 5 of the M42, and only 10 miles from Junction 15 of the M40. Please note: this site is under development and the owners will do everything they can to minimise disturbance to guests while improving the facilities. Also, there is some traffic noise from the A4141 at peak times, but it’s quiet at night.

Electric optional hardstanding and grass pitch (members only)

Liked: Large level hard standing pitches with a tap and electric hook up on each. Easy walk to canal side pub or Knowle shops. Nice to watch the Donkeys and other animals from your pitch.

Disliked: Road and aircraft noise could be an issue at busy times. Around the pitches needed grass cutting and a tidy up. More recycling bins needed.

Electric optional hardstanding and grass pitch (members only)

Liked: The pitches were a great size, plenty of room with both gravel and grass surfaces and very level too. The Donkeys were gorgeous and great to watch too! Electricity was extra, we didn't use it as we have solar. The welcome was warm and we really enjoyed our stay. We will be back.

Disliked: There was some noise from the road, didn't really bother us though.

Electric optional hardstanding and grass pitch (members only)

Liked: A lot of work has gone into this site but it’s still a work in progress. The pitches are really generous but we found it difficult to sort out the electric supply as we had trouble setting up the app and gave up. The rescue donkeys were charming,
Convenient location for onward travel. Great pub nearby.

Disliked: Some road noise.
Had difficulty in setting up app to get electricity so gave up

Liked: Simple site, with electric hook-up and water at pitch, which is obviously being upgraded. Huge pitches! Friendly owner. Donkeys in the next field a huge plus! Road noise was minimal, especially at night. Pub nearby.

Liked: Seeing and interacting with the donkey’s was great. Talking with one of the main volunteers showed the passion and knowledge of the donkeys needs.

Disliked: Road a bit noisy but every thing else made up for it

Electric optional hardstanding and grass pitch (members only)

Liked: Flat level pitches. Nice wide gravelled pitches.
View looking over fields.
Nice restaurant/pub just 15 mins walk away. We have been here before and you can see the developments that the site is undergoing. Site has WiFi which is charged for.

Disliked: Unfortunately, our pitch had a few dog messes on it. A black Labrador suddenly appeared on day one. Dog was friendly enough but our old dog got a bit worried.
The road noise was very evident as the site is on quite a busy main road.
Electricity is metered. Doesn't seem as if you get what remains on the meter returned.

Electric optional hardstanding and grass pitch (members only)

Liked: Excellent wide pitches, very close to the motorway, nice walks nearby and lovely to see the donkeys too. Easy access to water, grey and elsen facilities.

Disliked: End pitch was very water logged including around the EHU, not easy to setup and not walk mess into the van.

Local attractions

After you’ve all stopped fussing the donkeys, local bucket-list attractions include the spectacular and family-friendly Warwick Castle (20 minutes’ drive), with jousting sessions, raptor flying displays and live shows re-enacting major events in British history. Other attractions with a heritage slant include the National Trust properties of Baddesley Clinton, where you can tour Elizabethan interiors, or Packwood House (both 10 minutes), a Tudor mansion with an exquisite topiary garden. And of course, Shakespeare’s birthplace of Stratford-upon-Avon is only half an hour away by car for performances at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre and visits to the bard’s birthplace. The National Exhibition Centre (15 minutes) is host to year-round fairs and festivals, while petrolheads can spend time admiring the British bikes on display at the National Motorcycle Museum (10 minutes). And after all that culture, if your kids are asking for more time with furry creatures, Hatton Country World (also 10 minutes) has a petting farm as well as dinosaur trails and soft-play for toddlers.
