On the edge of the Cotswolds, a five-minute drive from Moreton-in-Marsh, Wolford Wood is a peaceful site bordered by its very own 150-acre ancient woodland – a Site of Special Scientific Interest that is home to a whopping 2,500 different species of flowers, fungi and wildlife. Wolford Wood also has an additional 50 acres of pastureland and wildflower meadows, plus five miles of wild and mown tracks. To top it all off, the site has a good set of facilities for a family get-together or for a group of friends going to the countryside. Communal amenities include a toilet and shower block. The pubs and restaurants of Moreton-in-Marsh can be reached by a 45- to 55-minute walk. The town also has two large supermarkets and a range of boutique shops and services, plus a train station with connections to Oxford, London Paddington, Worcester and Malvern. Northwards, Stratford-upon-Avon is half an hour’s drive away, or there is a bus from Moreton-in-Marsh that takes 50 minutes.

Non-electric grass tent pitch (wild)

Liked: A great site!
The pitches had a wild camping feel thanks to the nice touch of leaving the grass between pitches long.
While the camping kitchen (with kettle, lighting and plenty of washing up sinks) and the toilets and showers were well maintained and had everything I needed.

Good availability of fire pits, and the availability of grills too meant I could do some cooking on the fire as well.

(Also there's a park run here on a Saturday morning... which I'm sure is lovely for people far fitter than I am!)

Disliked: Only negative was the site can get a bit waterlogged after rain, but that's camping in Britain in October! Bring some boots/wellies and that ceases to be a problem! (Only putting this here as a footwear reminder to others, definitely not as a reason not to visit!)

Non-electric grass tent pitch (wild)

Liked: Beautiful and peaceful location near a forest, and not too far from local attractions and amenities. The firepit hire and logs were a great addition, as well as the washing up and shower facilities. Parking was plentiful.

Disliked: Wheelbarrows could do with updating and repairing as the ideas is very convenient, however almost all of them were either loose screws and handles, or punctured tyres which made them difficult to use.

Non-electric grass tent pitch (wild)

Liked: Great campsite. A very back-to-basics approach; really nice to get away from the modern world and enjoy a simpler existence for a couple of days. The location is great, too, and local towns/villages like Chipping Norton are beautiful places to visit.

Disliked: There was nowhere to put rubbish. I do get the ‘take your rubbish home’ approach, but we had nowhere to put food waste etc for two days. The toilets/showers were quite busy in the morning - it seemed there wasn’t quite enough facilities for the number of people the campsite could accept.

Liked: Love the wild field for camping and so much space to be away from other tents. Really handy there was a communal fridge over by the showers and fire pit and logs were great.

Local attractions

Chastleton House (five minutes’ drive) dates from the early 17th century and displays exquisite tapestries from the Flanders. This Jacobean mansion is one of several National Trust properties in the area. Others include Snowshill Manor and Garden (20 minutes), once the home of eccentric artist Charles Wade, and Hidcote (25 minutes). Try to catch a play at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon – it’s quite a thrill to see timeless plays like ‘Hamlet’ or ‘King Lear’ performed in the playwright’s birthplace. If you can’t get tickets, events also take place in the garden of the half-timbered house where the Bard was born. Cheltenham (50 minutes) has elegant shops and splendid green spaces like Montpellier Gardens, with sports fields and a bandstand, and Sandford Park, popular in the summer for its open-air pool. The Wilson Art Gallery and Museum displays Arts and Crafts artefacts (including works by William Morris), plus a collection of Dutch and Belgian art.
