  • Handcrafted cabins in lush woodland a 10-minute drive from Warwick
  • Charlecote House 10 minutes’ drive; Stratford-upon-Avon 15 minutes
  • Dogs welcome; kitchenette and woodburning stove; forest views
You wouldn’t think that lovely, peaceful Coplow Woodland Retreat, surrounded as it is by lush forest, actually sits just off the A46, the road that links Warwick (10 minutes’ drive) to Stratford-upon-Avon (15 minutes), and yet… That is how easily accessible this remote-feeling site is. Accommodation is in handcrafted wood cabins that sleep up to two adults and two children (on the sofa bed); dogs are welcome, too, though there is an additional fee. If you want the temperature inside your cabin to get extra cosy, there is a woodburner, and the owners provide a bucket of firewood that should keep you toasty for a couple of days (you can always buy more on site). The cabin kitchenette has two gas hobs, a terracotta fridge pot (a nod to the site’s eco credentials, which also include solar-powered electric lights) and all equipment to whip up a delicious family meal. The mini dining area fits two people (great for romantic meals by the light of the woodburner…); if you’re travelling as a family and don’t want to banish the kids to the sofa, you might prefer to take your meals alfresco, on the decking area, while admiring the splendid forest views. And if being in woodland inspires you to cook your meals in the open air, there is a firepit with a hanging barbecue. A composting toilet and a shower room (stocked with eco shower gel, shampoo and conditioner) are shared between two cabins; hand and bath towels are provided.

Local attractions

A lively university town, Warwick stretches along the River Avon, on the banks of which rises a medieval castle first built by William the Conqueror. The castle grounds include the Peacock Garden and the Horrible Histories Maze. On the outskirts of town, Lammas Field is a sprawling green area circled by a racecourse. A National Trust property, Charlecote House (10 minutes’ drive) is a red-brick mansion with Tudor-era turrets and Victorian extensions. The interiors feature marble floors and busts, as well as family paintings; outside, sheep and deer graze in the Capability Brown-designed parkland. When visiting Stratford-upon-Avon, head first to the box office of the Royal Shakespeare Theatre or the Swan Theatre to see if you can score tickets for the evening show (or better still, buy them online in advance). Then spend the day strolling through the town, looking for Shakespeare’s Birthplace and Anne Hathaway’s Cottage, and checking out the automata and mechanical art at the MAD Museum.
