  • Simple rural site in Staffordshire, on the edge of the Peak District
  • A 10-minute drive from Alton Towers and 20 minutes from Dovedale
  • Football and volleyball nets; lots of space; a minute from the pub
Family rift? One lot wants rides and slides and attractions, the others long for walks in the wilderness and watery outdoors stuff? Reconcile all warring parties at Rue Hill Campsite, a simple and friendly site in the Staffordshire countryside, where (almost) every wish can be granted. This special spot is surrounded by green fields on the edge of the Peak District, a minute’s drive from the village of Cauldon Low and about 10 minutes’ drive from Alton Towers. Space is the word here: there’s a wide grassy field to stay in with plenty of room for running about at full pelt too, as well as more organised activities around the football and volleyball nets. Barbecues are welcome; hire firepits with logs, sticks and paper from the team for the simple pleasures of gathering round the flames, warming fingers, sizzling things on sticks or singing lusty songs (reasonably quietly). It’s a minute’s drive to a pub with food and 15 minutes to a nicely varied selection of shops, supermarkets, takeaways and other eateries at Ashbourne.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Myself and my 2 friends took our 6 children camping for the first time. We only went for the 1 night as we wanted trial how the kids would get on, youngest being 4 years old. The campsite is absolutely spotless and very well kept. The toilet and shower facility is fantastic and it includes access point to charge your phone in the wall. The kids loved all the outdoor space to fly our kite, the onsite football nets and volley ball net. Really pleasant experience thank you.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ A hidden gem in the Staffordshire Moorlands — we’ll be back!

We visited as a mum with children — three younger teens and two older teens — not a traditional family unit, but we were made to feel completely welcome. We needed two tents and this was no issue at all — the price stayed the same and there was plenty of space without disturbing our neighbouring campers. Wonderfully inclusive!

The owners Lorraine and Brian are warm, friendly and passionate about what they’ve created.
You get a Hand-drawn map (so unique)of local attractions, walks and pubs — a lovely personal touch.

Set in Eight acres of stunning rural Staffordshire on the edge of the Peak District. The skies here are something else entirely — we experienced a thunderstorm one night and rather than being a nuisance, it was one of the most spectacular things we’ve ever witnessed from a campsite. Breathtaking. Only 5 minutes from Alton Towers too!

Showers and toilet block — as expect; clean and well stocked, but remember it’s a camping site not a hotel. Good lighting
Hot showers, picnic benches, recycling and drinking water all on site.

Football and volleyball nets kept the teens happily entertained for hours — and as a football family, those goal posts were everything to our boys! We know they’re not cheap to provide, so thank you. Please fellow campers — don’t hang off them or blast them unnecessarily so they last for everyone to enjoy. Lorraine even borrowed the children a ball as they forgot theirs.

Gentle Note to Parents
The trees and shrubs here have clearly been lovingly tended for years — every branch and bush. Please remind your little ones not to snap branches or damage the trees. Without this care the site simply wouldn’t be as beautiful as it is.

Hiring a fire pit cost £10 a night including wood and kindling is an absolute bargain. BBQs are welcome and you can bring windbreaks, awnings and gazebos at no extra cost perfect

Without a car, your options for exploring further afield are limited — worth planning ahead. There is some road traffic audible but it’s genuinely not a nuisance.

Wi-Fi is not the strongest — but that’s not why you go camping! If your child has devices and you’re not on an electric hook-up pitch, expect them to discover the bathroom block has sockets and practically live in there. 😄 leave their phones at home, or get electric pitch if you can, best still embrace the digital detox!

Perfect for Solo Travellers Too
This place has made me want to return alone as an adult. It is one of the few places I’ve found genuine quiet and calm. The atmosphere is unhurried and those skies — stunning. Highly recommend it to solo campers there is adult only section
It’s all field but sectioned off

Down the hill and through the cut you get reception and to see bunnies hopping everywhere beautiful wild flowers and plenty more of nature at its best

Overall
Brilliant value
.A back-to-basics, eco-friendly campsite with a genuinely warm heart that welcomes everyone. All campers were decent behaved too

Wonderful time and cannot wait to return! 🏕️

Electric hardstanding touring pitch

Liked Easy to find, a warm welcome on arrival and a quick check in. As 2 adults we were given a nice quiet pitch away from the ‘family’ pitches which was nice. The shower / toilet block was kept very clean It had fresh flowers and music playing which was a nice touch. Toilet roll and handwash was a plenty. Nice hot showers aswell as phone charging points in there. There are football goals and volleyball bets set up and lots of open space for children to play. Felt safe had a great time.
