  • Small and friendly adults-only site 10 minutes' drive from Shrewsbury
  • A 15-minute drive to Wroxeter Roman City; Ironbridge half an hour
  • Five-acre site with a bar and shop; shared kitchen; dedicated dog walk
Heritage hunters, serenity seekers, walkers, wildlife watchers and fans of all things Roman (and wine) … cart yourself off to this small, peaceful and secluded Shropshire site for all the above and a fair bit more, at a friendly rural base less than ten minutes' drive from the medieval market town and 600+ listed buildings of Shrewsbury. As well as its locale five miles from the Shropshire capital, Cartref Camping and Caravan Site is also half an hour's drive from the famed industrial setting and UNESCO World Heritage Site of Ironbridge, and a short drive from Wroxeter Roman City and its adjoining Roman vineyard. It's set in the Shropshire Hills where several walks and bike rides are easily reached, such as Offa's Dyke Path passing between Shrewsbury and nearby Welshpool; the Marches Way, also passing Shrewsbury on its way from Cheddar to Chepstow, and lake-based wanders around the glacial waters of Ellesmere. The amiable Cartref owners have named the site after the Welsh word for 'home', as the mission on site is for everyone to feel relaxed and comfy, whether they're Crusoe-style campers or out on their first trip with a new tent or caravan. Pitches have a cosy, private feeling as they're marked out with hedgerows. Within the site's five-acre field is a dedicated dog walk, and there's also a small bar selling local ales, Wrexham lager and Shropshire gin along with wines and other spirits. The immaculate amenities include a toilet and shower block with access for disabled guests, a washing-up area and a laundry. Cartfef also has a shop and communal kitchen.

Liked: Great campsite, very easy to book in, the pitches are brilliant, found the electric set up with the app worked great, the reg recognition for the barrier is much better than the normal key pad that most sites use.
Very convenient for Shrewsbury & Telford.

Disliked: Nothing to dislike about the site, the only thing for us, because we are walkers, trying to plot local walks is near impossible, even though the footpaths are clearly marked on the latest updated OS maps, lots of footpaths are blocked by local farmers and gardens because.
Shropshire Council, local farmers & wealthy homeowners clearly don't seem to respect the public rights of way act.

Liked: Site was beautiful. Very well maintained. Nice on-site bar area which served food on a Saturday evening - we did not try the food. Staff very helpful and friendly. Small shop. Site was quiet and a haven for birds. Security barrier for getting in and out. Showers and toilet block very clean. Chemical toilet emptying area well thought out. Loved the knee operated sink - fantastic idea. Small laundry room, which we did not use and small shed with leaflets of local area. Site is in a good location for Shrewsbury and also for exploring Wales/Snowdonia. Wi-fi was good. You get an electricity allowance per day and have to pay for any units used above that - which was reasonable. You do need a smart phone to log on to the electricity app, but it was easy to do.

Disliked: Although the showers and toilets were exceptionally clean, they were a little basic. Showers were the push button, fixed head, type which could not be held on, you had to keep pushing the button. They were, however, very clean and hot.

Liked: The site was small and very well kept. Lived the enclosed pitches so it felt like you had your own private space. The attention to detail was good, the little bar and shop with friendly staff was great. Even the chemical toilet cleaning area was impressive!! Great location with some lovely walks near by. Throughly enjoyed the stay.

Disliked: Dog walking area was very small, but even that was adequate so disliked nothing really.

Liked: Gorgeous little camp. Adults only which suits us as a couple who have brought up 5 children. Spotlessly clean and well kept. Staff very helpful and friendly. Toilets and showers clean and warm. And a lovely little bar on site. Beautiful countryside and unbelievably quiet. What's there not to like? Looking forward to returning.

Disliked: Loved everything about the camp. Apart from the distance. Wish it was a bit closer to home in the East Riding of Yorkshire.

Liked: Fantastic site! The staff were amazing and went above and beyond with service.
They even brought out treats for the dog but as ours is allergic to meat and couldn’t have one, they went and got some of their own dogs vegetarian treats for him and said he could keep them! Amazing.
The bar area is better in person than on the pictures, super friendly, lovely drinks and so cosy with the log burner.
We can’t wait to return in the summer to enjoy the beer garden.
Highly recommend.x

Local attractions

Shropshire's splendid capital of Shrewsbury is around five miles from Cartref Camping and Caravan Site. The piles of old buildings to see will keep anyone occupied for quite some time, but ask around when you're there to see if any of the famed festivals are running during your stay: the Shrewsbury Flower Show, Folk Festival and the Shrewsbury International Cartoon Festival and more have their HQs here. Roam a little further to Wroxeter Roman City, five miles south-east of Shrewsbury: once one of the biggest cities in Roman Britain, it's managed these days by English Heritage, which runs regular events, an audio tour and a museum around its bathhouse remains, townhouse re-creation and the biggest free-standing Roman wall in the country in the Old Work. Guided tours, afternoon teas and wines are available at Wroxeter Roman Vineyard. The Industrial Revolution site of Ironbridge half an hour's drive away is another top Shropshire attraction, or you could sample some fine dining or afternoon teas in the foodie town of Ludlow. Ellesmere, with its glacial meres created during the last Ice Age, also has a bowling green at the ruins of its 11th-century motte-and-bailey castle.
