Campsite

  • Small and friendly meadow site near the Shropshire Hills
  • Within 10 minutes' walk of Much Wenlock
  • Campfires allowed: logs and kindling available on site
Good times for all ages can be anticipated at Wenlock Edge Caravan and Camping near Wenlock Edge in Shropshire: if you want a peaceful and relaxed setting with stacks of space for the kids to let off steam, this family-friendly place will tick all your holiday boxes. The big draw here is the friendly vibe from amiable owners and seasoned campers Claire and Carol, who'll be seen on site keeping everything shipshape (and sorting out logs and kindling for your evening campfire). The modern facilities extend to showers and toilets with underfloor heating, hair dryers and heaters, as well as a laundry room. Other topping factors are the big and safe natural area for kids to run around in away from the main site, and the closeness of Withies to activities of all sorts, including hikes around the Shropshire Hills, industrious visits to Ironbridge and its museums, and mooching around Shrewsbury, under half an hour's drive away. Withies is set in six acres of grassy meadow on Wenlock Edge near the Shropshire Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It's a 10-minute walk to the historic market town of Much Wenlock and its visitor centre, traditional shops and a satisfying selection of pubs and restaurants.

Electric optional grass touring pitch

Liked: Clean and tidy with a new shower block. Proper electric Mira showers (not the push to use type). Electric hookup posts allowed for closer camping with friends

Disliked: The field is on a slop so you will need levelling ramps for a camper but the pitches nearest the showers and play area were most level.

Electric optional grass touring pitch

Liked: Compact nature of site, handy walk in to village from back of camping field, new toilet block and friendly owners. Good security with keypad access

Disliked: No marked pitches is fine providing people respect each's other distance and the site doesn't get too busy. Electric showers were a bit weedy and chemical loo disposal could do with a flush! There wasn't any hooks on the shower cubicles and insufficient bins for refuse on site but plans afoot to rectify this I believe! Some pitches could be on a bit of a slope.

Electric optional grass touring pitch

Liked: Immaculate toilet and shower facilities , the under floor heating was a real bonus. Very tidy site and quiet, which was handy as this was our first trip out with our 16 week old baby ( there was only us and one other staying ). Very close to the town centre , easy walking distance ( do take a torch for dark evenings as a small section doesn’t have pavement )

Disliked: Not a dislike but would have liked to have been told it’s a coded gate to get in, as we didn’t know the site was unmanned and maybe your pitch emailed over as we didn’t realise ( on texting the owner we did get told we could pitch wherever we wanted , which was fine as it was quiet but maybe would be a bit more chaotic when busy. But I imagine this is as it’s the start of the season and as stated , into ourselves and one other staying over

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Lovely campsite close to Wenlock Edge in Shropshire. Fairly quiet at night although close to a main road. Really well kept neat and tidy campsite. The shower and toilet block are really clean.

Disliked: When I arrived I was faced with two huge electric gates and a buzzer that no one answered for half an hour despite me ringing every 30 seconds. I also contacted the owner via the number on the sign outside but it just went straight to answerphone. Not a great start considering I'd driven for 3 hours from South wales and it was getting dark. Eventually a young woman answered and she sounded annoyed that I was ringing the buzzer - I explained I was trying to get in and had made a reservation on pitch up she replied abruptly "well my dads not here". I asked what I was supposed to do then and she replied " I'd better let you in then " and gave me the code for the gate. Not a good start. I also left a message for the owner in his answerphone but he still hasn't replied. The next morning I spoke to another camper who has also had the same experience. It's a real shame as I won't be coming back because of this and the campsite was really nice once I managed to get in.
Also the field has quite a slope- something to bear in mind particularly if you're in a roof tent like I was.

Local attractions

Wenlock Edge Caravan and Camping is in prime position for Shropshire's country, town and historic attractions, from its setting near the Shropshire Hills and within walking distance of town. Much Wenlock is between Shrewsbury and Bridgnorth, with the Ironbridge Gorge and the town of Telford to the north-east. Within a few minutes' walk is the limestone escarpment of Wenlock Edge, a Site of Special Scientific Interest running for over 19 miles between Craven Arms and Much Wenlock. It includes the marked trail of the Shropshire Way, the bridle path of the Jack Mytton Way, and eccentric structures like the tower Flounder's Folly, which many walks around the area pass. The Ironbridge Gorge Museums should entice even the most reluctant of small Shropshire holidaymakers: this UNESCO World Heritage Site has 10 museums telling the tale of Britain's Industrial Revolution, including the Blists Hill Victorian Town and Enginuity, an interactive design and technology centre with shows and workshops. Also make time for a trip on the spectacular Severn Valley Railway, on its 16-mile route through the Severn valley and along the River Severn for much of the way. The track runs from Bridgnorth to Kidderminster; alight nearby at Ironbridge Level Crossing, or nine miles from Withie at Bridgnorth. County capital Shrewsbury is 13 miles away, and the market town of Ludlow within 23.
