Nordic woodfired hot tub
Misty morning mosco island, ellesmere lake

  • Lakeside park in a wildlife haven on five acres of grassland
  • Dog friendly with woodland walks; hot tub to hire
  • A few minutes' walk from a nature reserve with fishing pools
Grownups! If you seek serenity, scenery and nature-spotting on holiday, this is the Shropshire site for you. Adjacent to the mere of Colemere and set on the lake's south side, adults-only Colemere Caravan Park is in a countryside setting on five acres of wildlife-laden land with peaceful walks all around – and a quarter of a mile from Wood Lane nature reserve, which the expert folk at the BBC describe as one of the best birdwatching sites in Shropshire. Owners Dave and Ingrid have put a lot of thought into ensuring that guests are kept comfy at this peaceful and popular little site: as well as a good range of accommodation options, guests have access to a fully-equipped and cute social area, all hand-built and including a kitchen with fridge, kettle, utensils, pots and microwave. Firepits are available on request and guests can bring their own barbecues. And for keeping toasty after that, a Nordic wood-fired hot tub overlooking the lily pond is available to hire in the afternoons and evenings for four-hour periods (couples only). Picnic tables are dotted around to place the campfire food on, and the park has well-kept separate bathrooms for ladies and gents.

Non-electric grass campervan pitch

Liked: Lovely quiet adult only site with great facilities. Owners were very accommodating, setting up the hottub for us on the first night & providing a fire pit & wood. Loved sitting in the tub looking at the stars!
Great location with plenty of good walks.
Had the perfect relaxing weekend away, will be back!

Disliked: Would have been nice to know the cost of the hottub hire on the website, it's £50 for 4 hours.
Wifi is not great, very intermittent signal but that's not always a bad thing if you want to escape!

Electric grass campervan pitch

Liked: The location is perfect. Literally a few steps from pitches to the lake which has a circular walk that takes about 45 mins and access onto the canal. The pitches are spacious but some are sloping so need levelling blocks if in a campervan. Really pretty site, well maintained with a small duck pond. Social room with sofas, heaters, kettle, fridge etc for getting together with other Campers in the evenings. Hot showers and the owner was really helpful and gave us loads of information about the local area. Would definitely stay again.

Disliked: Not really a dislike but the showers and toilets are quite small. Only 2 toilets/showers so can get quite busy. The toilet doors don't really offer a high level of privacy but there is a unisex toilet/shower with a proper full door.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thanks for your review the unisex toilet is next door with signage ? The toilets are always cleaned and functional. We never noticed no queues during busy periods and no complaints were received .

Liked: Absolutely loved our time, the site is perfect, lovely owners who are so helpful. Great facilities, especially the communal hub which had everything you need and a great place to meet with fellows campers. The surrounding areas , walks and local pubs were fantastic. Will definitely be going back.

Electric grass touring pitch

Liked: Very clean and quiet. Right next to a lovely big lake with wooded walk around it. 45 min canal walk to elesmere. Very pretty site.

Disliked: Not the sites fault but signal isn’t very good but found even when driving around neighbouring areas the signal wasn’t great. There is WiFi but a bit hit and miss. The roads leading up to the site are very narrow, again not the sites fault but good to know. We have a twin axle 8ft caravan so was a little bit snug. Luckily we didn’t meet any traffic coming towards us otherwise we may still be there now not being able to move ;)

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thanks for booking with us!

We do have fast fibre broad band on site and so has the whole community . The roads have passing places all along the route to the site …. Sorry you had trouble with this .

Many thanks

Electric grass touring pitch

Liked: Had a lovely stay at Colemere Caravan Park. Great communication from the start and a warm welcome from Dave. Our pitch had stunning views of the lake and the facilities were clean and well looked after. The owners clearly care about their guests. They had a minor issue with late-night noise and handled it very well, we weren’t disturbed at all but they were so keen to apologise anyway. Highly recommend – we’ll definitely be back!

Otter camping pod

Liked: Have stayed several times in the past and the setting is what draws us back time after time. We use the 'pods' as I'm too old to try and negotiate getting in/out of a tent!
The site itself is kept spotlessly clean by Ingrid and Dave can be seen looking after the upkeep of the pitches. The site has spacious pitches covering 4 fields with a mixture of camping, caravans, motorhome and pods. As an adults only site it is lovely and tranquil with plenty of walks starting from the site. There is the lake immediately on the edge of the site with walks that can vary from 20 minutes to around 4 hrs plus. Canal walk into Ellesmere too.
Our stay this time was for my husbands 70th birthday. I mentioned it to Ingrid in passing and she very kindly dropped off a lovely bottle of wine. Such a lovely, kind personal touch which was greatly appreciated but totally unexpected.
Another fantastic stay. We promise not to leave it too long before returning!

Local attractions

There's stacks to do in the surrounding area, whether you want to stick close to home by foot or pedal, or drive a bit further afield to the towns, tourist attractions and landscapes of Shropshire, Cheshire and north-east Wales – the city of Chester is 40 minutes away and Llangollen on the River Dee reachable within an hour. On the doorstep, tackle the two-mile walk along the canal towpath to Ellesmere or make your way via the purpose-built circular walk and through a wooded area of rhododendrons around the mere and nature reserve, a Site of Special Scientific Interest with species galore to see like otters, lapwings and water birds. The reserve also has several deep fishing pools well-stocked with catfish and big carp; more fishing – and carp – can be had nearby at Blackmere along the towpath from Colmere. Also nearby, wander into Colemere village to see the fifteenth-century thatched cottages, listed in the Domesday Book, to Ellesmere for food festivals, regattas and boat rides on the mere, or drive to Rednal Karting, Paintballing and Laser for an exciting time ten minutes away. Castles including Chirk and Whittington are a doddle to drive to too. If being on the water is your thing, a narrowboat marina is a three-minute drive away from the caravan park and both Colemere and Whitemere sailing clubs are within easy reach. By car, the standard of whitewater rafting at Bala Adventure and Watersports will have you foaming at the mouth – a milder form of the sport, along with abseiling, gorge walking, a steam railway and horse-drawn boat trips is available over the border in Wales at Llangollen.
