  • Quiet park in scenic grounds in Scrooby village, by the River Ryton
  • A 10-minute drive from Bawtry and 15 from Yorkshire Wildlife Park
  • Acclaimed food pub within a couple of minutes' walk
Sail ever so seamlessly into your next summer (or spring, autumn or winter…) hol at Pilgrims Fathers Caravan Park: named in honour of a local resident who emigrated to New England on the Mayflower in 1620, this stellar site is in green and scenic surrounds on the banks on the River Ryton, a couple of miles from Bawtry and within the ancient village of Scrooby. Staying here will have you following in famed footsteps – Queen Elizabeth I and Cardinal Wolsey both stopped off in the area during their travels. Guests on their own journeys will be pleased to know that this park is in a handy location, covering five and a half acres of north Nottinghamshire countryside on the border with Lincolnshire between the Peak District National Park to the west and the Lincolnshire Wolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty to the east. Days out nearby could include seeking out the animals at Yorkshire Wildlife Park, perusing the shops in Doncaster and traipsing through Sherwood Forest – all within half an hour’s drive. Back at the park, grass pitches, showers and toilets, a washing-up area and chemical disposal are handy facilities for your hol. Parking is allowed by pitches; if you want to leave the car there for a day, a bus stop close by has links to Bawtry and on to Doncaster. For eats after returning from roams, an acclaimed pub serving food is a few minutes’ stroll away and a couple of supermarkets are about five minutes away by car in Bircotes if you’re having a crack at cooking.

Local attractions

Scrooby has a few sights to head towards on foot from Pilgrims Fathers Caravan Park, including the octagonal-spired Parish church, a mill, the old vicarage, ancient farmhouses and the pinfold. Further out, the National Trust Clumber Park in Worksop is a 20-minute drive away for saunters through gardens and along trails passing by heaths and parkland; bikes for hire mean you can cycle 20 miles’ worth of nearby paths too. Alternatively, wooded walks can be had in Sherwood Forest or the Sherwood Forest National Nature Reserve (30 minutes away by car). Kids not keen on wanders? Sundown Adventureland, a theme park for the under-10s, is a half-hour drive away as well. For urban times, Sheffield, Lincoln and Leeds are all under an hour away by car, and in an hour and 10 minutes you could be browsing the boutiques in York’s historical streets.
