  • Wildlife-rich site spread across 100 acres with seven fishing lakes
  • A 10-minute drive from aviation heritage sites and Tattershall Castle
  • Angle for coarse fish, carp and trout in the park’s well-stocked lakes
Angling aficionado? A break at Bain Valley Fisheries, a site set across 100 acres of farmland with seven lakes created from old quarry pits, is just the ticket for fishing folk. At this peaceful site in the pretty village of Tattershall Thorpe, deep in rural Lincolnshire, settle down by one of the bodies of water – some of which are 11-foot deep – for daytime angling or turn up at night to fish under the shimmer of the stars. Half the site’s made up of water, so there’s ample room to find a space of your own or as a small group in the hopes of reeling in carp, coarse fish and trout. Not just here to catch water-based critters? Wander around the site on the lookout for birds, continuing on to one of the public footpaths in the surrounding area. If hunger strikes, nab a table at the 13th-century pub in the village for food. This park is a prime spot too for World War I and II buffs: the Battle Of Britain Memorial Flight Visitors Centre and Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage Centre are both within 10 minutes’ drive. With parking at every lake (and pitch), fishing at the site is accessible to anglers with disabilities. Supplies are available in Woodhall Spa town, three miles away, which has a range of independent shops as well as a bowling green and an open-air swimming pool. There's no toilet on the pitching field but guests are very welcome to use the toilet facilities next to the farmhouse (300 yards from the field).

Electric grass motorhome pitch

Liked: Cheap and clean but it’s more for people who enjoy fishing. Ok for a stop over but not for me.

Disliked: I thought the park up was near the lakes but it was a field away from the lakes. Had difficulty in finding where to go and couldn’t get to talk to anyone on the phone for help. Had to ask one of the fisherman where to go

Local attractions

When you’re not fishing, set aside some time for a visit to the National Trust’s Tattershall Castle, a medieval red-brick fortress with audio guided tours available, then breathe in the fresh air at the nearby Tattershall Lakes Country Park and Tattershall Farm Park (all 10 minutes’ drive). Wanders done, there are a few unmissable sights for history devotees in the area, including the Battle Of Britain Memorial Flight Visitors Centre (10 minutes), a hangar storing RAF planes including a Lancaster bomber, and the WWII aircraft displays in the Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage Centre (15 minutes). To find out about a different part of the area’s past, make a beeline for Boston, a market town many Puritans left for the New World. It’s also famed for St Botolph’s Church, which has one of the tallest medieval towers in the country, and market days are Wednesday and Saturday if you fancy a side of shopping with your historical explores. Craving the coast? The seaside – and more specifically, Skegness – is around 40 minutes away.
