  • Peaceful site next to a 16th-century pub in Kirkby on Bain
  • 1.75-acre coarse fishing with carp, bream, rudd, roach and more
  • Three miles from Woodhall Spa and 21 from Lincoln
Fishing and fauna? Barn owls and kingfishers are among the residents you might encounter among the six acres of wildlife haven of Bainside House in Lincolnshire, with more feathered and furry critters easily spottable in the surrounding countryside via serene strolls along the waters of the Bain. Fish should be easily spotted on site as well: Bainside House's main attraction is its 1.75-acre fishing lake stocked with carp, bream, tench, perch, rudd, roach and barbell. Fishing not your thing? Golf courses and cycle paths are nearby, or you could amble along to Woodhall Spa, zip along to Lincoln, or hike the Lincolnshire Wolds, the Lincolnshire Fens or the Viking Way. (Whatever you pick for your day, round it all off with an evening at the topping 16th-century pub next to the site, which serves good food and a range of cask ales.) Among the basic but well-maintained amenities at this friendly place are a toilet and shower block with disabled access; recycling, and chemical disposal (only biodegradable or cesspool-safe chemicals to be used here, please). Bainside is for adults only.

Electric grass touring pitch

Liked: Really friendly couple running the site (Paul & Fiona), super helpful.
Very quiet location with good dog walks and only 3 miles to Woodhall Spa, 5 to Horncastle. Centrally located for Lincoln or the coast (approx 25 miles to each).
Pitches are level and good sizes, we managed with our Basecamp 4 no problem which has the door and awning coming off the back, total approx 9.5m long. This can be an issue on some sites.
There is site wifi, but we have our own 5g mobile router, so didn't use the site wifi, so can't comment on the speed.
Lovely, dog friendly pub next door which also does food. We didn't eat there, so can't comment on the food.
Showers and toilets could benefit from a little updating/maintenace (shower riser broken in one), but were clean and perfectly fine.
We'd definately go again and recommend to friends.

Disliked: Not really a major issue, but there seemed to be limited waste facilities. Small rubbish bins with a notice saying only food and drink waste and to take anything else home. Not tgat we're in the habbit of creating loads of rubbish, but there Didn't appear to be facilities to segregate or recycle, e.g cardboard or tins/cans/glass? Ended up putting it all in one bin which didn't seem right.

Electric hardstanding and grass motorhome pitch

Liked: This is a nice quiet site with level pitches. We were on a hard standing with EHU, which was almost like a super service pitch as the water tap was located on the EHU post shared with one other pitch. We were made to feel very welcome by the owners who were friendly and approachable. Toilets and showers were clean and well maintained. There's a nice pub next door, we only had a drink but they serve food and there was a nice friendly atmosphere inside. We were there for walking and there's loads of paths, not too far to pick up the Viking Way which you can walk along in to the centre of Horncastle and beyond. The nearby Kirby Moor Nature Reserve is worth a look, we had the place to ourselves when were there. This is a site that I'll bookmark to return to again in the future.

Local attractions

This amiable place is close to the Bain river, in the small village of Kirkby on Bain between Horncastle and Coningsby. Walking trails and cycle paths are easy to access from here, along the river, from the village and to the nearby Sites of Special Scientific Interest of Kirkby Moor and Moor Farm Nature Reserves, to the west of Kirkby on Bain. The Lincolnshire Wolds are six miles away. The handsome market town of Woodhall Spa three miles away is a Fairtrade village with a selection of top shops to spend some money at, and access to long-distance walks of the Fens including the Viking Way's 147 miles from the Humber Bridge in north Lincolnshire to Oakham in Rutland. (Much more easily, there's also the Spa Way, a traffic-free footpath of just over three miles from Woodhall Spa to Horncastle.) Golfers can shoot along the courses and academy of Woodhall Spa's National Golf Centre, voted among the top 25 courses in the world; and if you'd rather have putting, a course plus tennis courts, an outdoor pool and a croquet lawn are at Jubilee Park three miles away. For a day trip (or two), the castle, cathedral and shops of Lincoln can be reached in about 21 miles.
