  • Traditional Lincolnshire country pub between Louth and Mablethorpe
  • A 15-minute drive from Louth and half an hour from Skegness
  • Home-cooked food and a cosy fireplace for winter nights
Looking for a peaceful site beside an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty? Hitch a ride any way you can to Waggon and Horses, in the rural village of South Reston and between Louth and Mablethorpe. It's 15-minute drive from here to the coastal resorts of Trusthorpe and Sutton-on-Sea, and the Lincolnshire Wolds are within easy reach. Guests have been welcomed to this splendid countryside inn for over 130 years: these days it's a friendly spot with top facilities, where you can tuck into home-cooked food or a Sunday carvery in the restaurant, have a bar snack or regular special, and join in with the traditional pub games and events regularly held on site… all the while working your way through the menu of guest beers and real ales… Between the seaside and the Wolds, this is a top base for either a weekend break or a longer visit, with loads of activities on offer from leisurely country and coast walks to cycling, golf, nature spotting and seaside amusements. A bus service stops at the site entrance for runs to Louth, Mablethorpe and Skegness. The site has a play area, and barbecues are allowed if you'd rather dinner was DIY. The refurbished toilets and shower are another big plus, and fresh drinking water is available from a tap outside the nearby village pub.

Electric grass touring pitch

Liked: The pub was lovely and very welcoming. We had the fish and chip dinner and it was beautiful, the fish was the size of the plate
the touring field was nice and flat, grass was keep short.
The facilities do need up dating but they were ok for what we needed, as we were only there for one night.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Location, atomosphere

Disliked: Shortage of toilet and shower facilities: 2 toilet cubicals, zero urinals and 1 shower for the entire site.
The shortage was made worse when a group of 30 to 50 bikers assembled on the site for the weekend, bringing the total number of campers up to about 100.
Management gave no warning that this biker camping rally was happening, even though there weren't enough toilets and showers prior to it.
I've personally had bad experiences with bikers (attacking my friend, stealing my van, obstructing me when I was franchised in a pub they hung out in; stuff like that). I'm not saying all bikers are bad, of course not, but I was aware that some could be problematic and, regardless of whether I'd had good experiences with bikers, I don't get on well with having 50 or so men descending on where I'm camping, especially when with my daughter, who has high anxiety, and has been scared of the sound of mororbikes.
It got so that we couldn't get to the two toilets and single shower without wither walking through the biker camp or having to make a big detour round it.
We did our best to make it all feel safe and relaxed for our anxiety-prone daughter (e.g., telling her that bikers are just like everyone else, etc) but their biker outfits are designed to look scary (same as punk outfits, says me as an ex punk) and despite our best efforts to keep her calm, our daughter admitted to being scared 3 times. Please bear in mind that she never, ever normally admits to being scared of anything ir anyone.
I quietly asked the pub/site manager on Satirday evening if she ahd any guarantees of our safety with all the bikers there. Her response was to come up to our tent pitch after dark with a big, bulky biker behind her, and ask me loudly if I felt unsafe!
Without going on,my thoughts are that the site is not suitable for having an influx of extra campers regardless of whether or not they're bikers.
Secondly, more toilets and showers are needed any way (I checked the local council's specifcations and there should be separate facilities by gender, etc).
Thirdly, the manageress should be respectful that bikers' deliberately intimidating apprearance will intimidate people (e.g., children) regardless of how lovely individual bikers may be.
Fourthly, some of us have had bad experiences with big groups of men, bikers or not, and not feel safe having a big rally of them descend upon and join what was a quiet campsite.
Fifthly, dealing with a guest's quietly voiced query about safety by looming up on them late at night with a big man behind them in the shadows and asking (so yhe whole campsite can hear) "Do you still feel unsafe?" makes everything worse.

Electric grass touring pitch

Liked: It was very quiet, nice open grass field. It was just us one one other on the site. However this was before schools finished for the summer holidays and mid week.

Disliked: I wouldn’t call the amenities suitable… I would rather they had said that they do not have any showers. As soon as we opened the door to the toilet it absolutely reeked and it wasn’t even a hot day. We’re luckily self efficient and do not need showers or toilets as we have this in the camper van. The sink to do dishes is so close to the waste disposal site that we didn’t use this either.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: The owner of the pub/site was lovely and was very welcoming. The location was nice and quiet, would definitely go again, will try the pub food next time, unfortunately didn't get a chance this time as no breakfast on Sundays due to roasts but we had to go before that. Two unisex toilets and shower, basic amenities but that's the whole point of camping. Fairly big pitch size, but it was our first time camping, so could be standard, we were happy enough.

Disliked: Not really a dislike but the pub shut a bit early Saturday, but I think it only stays open when there's enough people, which is fair enough.

Local attractions

Get out into the Lincolnshire Wolds or browse the nearby market towns for inland adventuring: Louth, 15 minutes' drive away, has an acclaimed market for the procurement of local produce, as well as waterside strolls from town all the way to Tetney Lock. Golf is available at Kenwick Park and Woodthorpe, both within 10 minutes of the site. Towards the coast, make for Mablethorpe (15 minutes), for the Mablethorpe Seal Sanctuary, the miniature railway, boating lake and small funfair… and perhaps you may care to follow in the poetic footsteps of Mr Tennyson and shout your verses out to the Mablethorpe sea…? No? Take the little sand train instead for a lyrically handsome journey to the north end of Mablethorpe's beach. The beach and pier of Skegness (30 minutes) have been a famed spot for British hols for generations; it's not for nothing that the town was the site of the first Butlin’s (and was once voted the best retirement spot in all the land)… There's loads to do here alongside the beach and pier, including a seal sanctuary (with tarantulas and penguins), the National Parrot Sanctuary, and the spectacular Gibraltar Point Nature Reserve. Sutton-on-Sea and Ingoldmells are within easy reach too: you should of course sample (more) fish and chips at each.
