  • Peaceful South Ormsby Estate site a 15-minute drive from Louth
  • Sandilands and the coast 25 minutes’ drive; Lincoln 50 minutes
  • Fishing lake with brown trout; dogs welcome; pub a 10-minute walk away
If you want your holiday money to go towards sustainable initiatives for the environment and the local community, consider staying at Ketsby Lake Campsite. A 15-minute drive from Louth, Ketsby Lake sits within the Lincolnshire Wolds National Landscape, surrounded by stunning hills, peaceful rural landscapes and pretty stone villages. As well as non-electric low-impact grass pitches, the site comes with eco-conscious amenities such as composting toilets. There are also showers and a washing-up area. But the highlight of the site might be its spring-fed fishing lake, with quiet banks where anglers (and their dogs) might spend a few hours waiting for wild brown trout to bite or just making the most of the tranquil setting. If fish don’t bite (or even if they do), you might have to head to the pub for dinner: luckily, the nearest watering hole is just half a mile away (10 minutes’ walk down a country lane), and it serves locally sourced food and well-poured pints. There are miles of walking trails and cycling routes to explore within the estate, or you can head to Rigsby Wood - Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust (10 minutes’ drive), an area of ancient woodland with seasonal carpets of bluebells and wild orchids; or to Red Hill Nature Reserve (15 minutes), where colourful butterflies dart around among the wildflowers. Dogs are not allowed at either site, so if that’s a deal-breaker, make for the coast and National Trust - Sandilands (25 minutes). Due to the presence of nesting birds, though, you’ll still have to keep your canine buddy on a lead.

Local attractions

Whether you want to brave the North Sea waters for a swim, explore the coastline by canoe or face your fears on the thrill rides at Skegness Pleasure Beach, there’s plenty to do in Skegness (25 minutes’ drive). You might also want to visit the Natureland Seal Sanctuary, or check out the monster truck events at Skegness Raceway. One of the most popular attractions in Cleethorpes (40 minutes) is the Coast Light Railway, with a steam locomotive on a narrow-gauge track that circles a lake (where you can hire pedal and rowing boats). At Cleethorpes Country Park, your dog can have a splash in a designated canine swimming area. The university city of Lincoln (50 minutes) is renowned for its medieval cathedral and for Lincoln Castle, which houses a copy of the Magna Carta. Both structures were built by order of William the Conqueror in the 11th century. Afterwards, take a stroll up Steep Hill, a cobbled lane lined with independent shops.
