Chilling back at camp

  • Almost-wild camping pitches in 47 acres of the National Forest
  • Twycross Zoo 10 minutes' drive away; pub across the road
  • Income from pitches supports the preservation of the natural habitat
Now here’s an intriguing prospect – a place where you can not only go camping in the woods but also contribute towards the long-term survival of the woodland in question too… Stays at Fire and Stars Woodland Camping, just outside the little Leicestershire village of Newton Burgoland, take you to 47 acres of National Forest woodland, and income generated on site goes towards supporting the ongoing protection of these natural habitats so that they can be enjoyed by future generations too. As befits such a mission, this is an eco-friendly place with an almost-wild camping setup. You’ll really have a chance to get to know your surroundings on a stay here, setting up right there in the forest on spacious pitches that have firepits already dug out for safe campfire building. Because it’s a proper eco-conscious site, there’s no mains water or electricity here, so you’ll need to bring torches, lamps and water supplies with you. It’s not entirely wild camping though, as you’ll have access to compost toilets and portable toilets (plus a shower at the nearby pub by arrangement and for a small extra charge). There’s much fun to be had on site and in the surrounding National Forest – looking out for wildlife, climbing trees and the like – and plenty more nearby. You can also easily get out to all sorts of family attractions including a zoo, a farm park and a watersports centre. If the only thing missing is a pint, you may well be pleased to hear that there’s a traditional pub just opposite the site that serves up evening meals and welcomes kids and dogs (with a play area and beer garden to top it all off).

Non-electric forest floor tent pitch (woodland)

Liked: I loved how each tent pitch area was it's own area, with the trees making a natural partition between them. All the tent pitches were a very short walk from the car park and there were carts etc to take kit, equipment, luggage to and from the pitch areas. The site is very well kept and managed and we were greeted very kindly by the owner/manager

Disliked: Just the weather as it rained on and off from mid evening throughout the night but nothing to dislike about the site.

Liked: Everything nice owners super helpful pitches aren't what I'd call pitches they are so far apart it really is your own private spot in the forest does not feel like a campsite

Non-electric forest floor tent pitch (woodland)

Liked: What a fantastic place. All pitches are spaced out nicely to give privacy, it’s like you’re in your own little magical forest. There’s a large size grass area where the children can play with gocarts, football net and a box full of toys. You can buy fire wood and water on site (there’s not running water on site so bring plenty). There’s a pub a few minutes walk away with a children’s play area. 5 minute drive to Tesco and co-op.

Disliked: The toilets aren’t nice and smell quite bad, there is a sign with a new design for ones that will be built.

Local attractions

You may well spot various wild animals while you’re staying in the forest – but for bigger beasts you’ll need to take an outing to Alpaca Park Farm (15 minutes’ walk) or meet the more exotic residents of Twycross Zoo (10 minutes’ drive). Need something a bit more active for energetic members of your party? There are lots of trails to walk along at Sence Valley Forest Park (10 minutes), or they may like to bounce themselves silly at Rebound Inflatable Park (10 minutes). The latter is a handy option for a damp day, as is Conkers (15 minutes), which has both indoor and outdoor play areas and exhibits to explore. It’s also worth dedicating a bit of time to the area’s history, perhaps stepping back in time to the 15th century with the interactive exhibits at Bosworth Battlefield Heritage Centre (20 minutes), riding on the Battlefield Line Steam Railway (10 minutes) or taking in the tower and tunnels at Ashby De La Zouch Castle (10 minutes).
