  • Adults-only campsite in hilly countryside near Market Harborough
  • A 10-minute drive to Foxton Locks, and 20 to Lutterworth
  • Covered communal eating area; dark skies site and wildlife haven
Base yourself at Valley View Campsite for a peaceful, adults-only stay among Leicestershire hills and valleys near Market Harborough, or use the place as a base for day trips to the bright lights of Birmingham (an hour’s drive). Either way, those far-reaching rural views come as standard on all the spacious pitches. No-frills facilities cover spotlessly clean showers and loos (there’s no electricity by the way, so factor in torches for late-night trips around the site). Barbecues are allowed or you can pick up takeaways in Fleckney (five minutes’ drive) and eat in The Barn, an undercover communal dining area for unwinding, meeting fellow guests and doing the washing up. If the weather is behaving and conditions are right, you may catch some colourful sunrises and sunsets, and as the area has a low level of light pollution, some serious stargazing is possible on clear nights. The site is also something of a wildlife haven, so keep your eyes peeled for sparrow hawks and buzzards, rabbits and deer. Dogs are welcome at Valley View, and there’s a separate area where you can take them for exercise.

Electric grass touring pitch

Liked: Views were as lovely as described. Helen was lovely and super friendly. Large pitch on nice lush grass, fairly level and flat for the caravan. Didn't use the showers etc so can't comment. The three Red Kites were a lovely bonus, not seen those in real life before.

Disliked: Road at back of caravan pitches was a little noisy and busier on the Monday. No flush/tap at elsan point. Bin difficult to locate initially.

Liked: I booked Valley View Campsite as a last minute one night getaway and I’m so happy I did.
The campsite was immaculate and the facilities were great. The views, the peace and quiet and the stars were just lovely. Helen was very friendly and all the small touches in the barn area were really thoughtful.
I will be back for a longer stay!

Electric grass touring pitch

Liked: Lovely view across the valley. There was us and four other tents, so was nice and quiet. The site is basic, but perfect as you have everything you need and is kept nice and clean. There plenty to do in the area and places to eat or purchase food nearby.

Local attractions

Starting in the village of Mowsley, have a wander on foot around the Laughton Hills or do some exploring on horseback from the local riding stables (both five minutes’ drive). For a gentle stroll, follow the Grand Union Canal towpath out of the village – it’s an easy walk to Foxton Locks (10 minutes), where you can watch barges ascend a flight of 10 locks, hire a boat to chug along the canal yourself, or have a nose around Foxton Canal Museum (15 minutes). Exercise completed for the day? Foxton Locks Inn is the spot for a virtuous post-walk pint and a bite to eat. If you have the urge to spend some of your hard-earned cash, Market Harborough (15 minutes’ drive) is packed with antiques emporiums and unusual shops, or try Lutterworth (20 minutes) for its historic Thursday market and stick around for a tour of elegant 17th-century Stanford Hall (20 minutes, check opening dates before you visit).
