  • Smart glamping site in Longtown, with views of the Black Mountains
  • A couple of miles from Offa's Dyke Path; half an hour from Hay-on-Wye
  • Local pub and well-stocked village shop a short walk away
A holiday taking in two countries – a tad ambitious? Not in the slightest. Take off to Offa’s Dyke Retreat and such escapades are very easy indeed, as you’re almost on the border of England and Wales, with plenty of gorgeous scenery and outdoorsy antics on both sides of the divide. You can start gazing at that scenery without even leaving this friendly glamping site in the little village of Longtown, for the outlook here is one of the Black Mountains and the Brecon Beacons National Park. Ready for a closer look? Get those boots on and set off for a wander: the Offa’s Dyke path passes nearby on its way from Pandy to Hay-on-Wye, and there are lots of little local paths to explore too. A stroll of a much less strenuous variety (barely a minute, in fact) takes you to the local pub for home-cooked meals. If you can manage a little further (well, a couple of minutes), you can get to a fab village shop stacked with fresh and frozen food, local tipples and homemade cakes. Stock up there and trot back to the site for a picnic or barbecue (barbecues and firepit provided, with firewood available to buy on site), or use the well-equipped communal kitchen to prep your eats. Other shared facilities on site include a toilet block with a couple of showers; no need to bring your own towels, as you’ll be provided with these when you get here, along with bedding for your cosy sleeping quarters.

Shepherd's hut (four person, hot tub, private bathroom amenities)

Liked: Great area with lovely views, fairly private but not yet fully and in a quiet area the host wasn't there on welcoming due to us getting there later on in the evening but didn't have to much properlys finding where we needed to be or how to get into our stay but had clear communication with them prior to arranging, hot tub was great lovely a hot/warm for us on arrival and ready to jump in with all amenities ready for use even one's we had forgotten which was a plus over all great layout site with fair good lighting along the main pathway, local pub was lovely a friendly great for a nice beer and food

Disliked: More recommendations then dislikes but as an disabled person this could help go along way for future stays.
Lighting from the main pathway to the cabin was solar lighting and wasn't on when we arrived so was abit different seeing where to go could do with a light system that's on a timer based relay or powered sensor.
Hot tub area could do with a bit more privately from the side that was viewable from the next cabin (trees just need to grow more) but in mean time could benefit from a screen or something to give it that privately while the greeny grows fully, would highly recommend hooks and shower curtain to go across the window for that extra bit of privacy (personal) but apart from that was great overall is an upcoming site and can see this being alot better as the site develops in the future

Shepherd's hut (four person)

Liked: Hut was cosy and bed very comfy and sheltered from the wind. Loved the fact you had your own little garden space. The shared facilities were amazing and we spent the evening chatting to other guests, cooking pizza and playing some of the board games and table football. Only came for one night but would definitely return for longer. Lovely location. Sampled the local for a quick pint and my kind of local, proper pub. All at a very reasonable price. Next time I want a hot tub!

Shepherd's hut (four person)

Liked: We really enjoyed our stay here , cute Shepards hut , pool table and games for kids ,clean showers ,toilet and Shepard's hut , has heating inside the hut for cold nights like when we stayed , local pub and shop within 5 minutes , large green area for kids to play , I like the layout of the cabins with your own garden , very well kept and stocked , has WiFi and is in the lovely countryside with animals in the field , peaceful

Disliked: 4pm check in time and then it was dark , as we only stayed the night but it is November now and gets dark early , so no fault of the owner

Shepherd's hut (four person, private bathroom amenities)

Liked: It is in a lovely spot. The roads aren’t very easy. My son and I were touring Wales to give him time driving getting ready for his driving test. We only stayed at the Offas Dyke Retreat one night.
The local shop has a great range of local and general groceries.
The communal space has a range cooker with 6 halogen hot plates and 3 good ovens. There is a large fridge/freezer all of which makes up for the hot plate and microwave in the shepherds huts. There are also several excellent family bathrooms for those huts that don’t have their own.

Disliked: The cookware is thin aluminium which never has a flat base after its first use and doesn’t work well on standard electric hot plates.
The single bed is transverse above the head of the double bed. That’s life in a small space. For almost all self catering places you need to travel with some of your own kit like your favourite saucepan, knife and pillow.

Shepherd's hut (hot tub, private bathroom amenities, three person)

Liked: Lovely quiet place to stay with our 7 year old and 2 dogs.
Clean communal spaces- fully equipped kitchen area was perfect!
Hot tub was well looked after and perfect for a cold autumn evening.
Joey was happy to supply us with some wood for the fire pit which our son loved as he was able to roast marshmallows.
Pub within walking distance was ideal!

Disliked: The local pub was very quiet and has limited opening hours so lacked a bit of atmosphere but it was within walking distance which was a plus!

Shepherd's hut (four person, private bathroom amenities)

Liked: The games room was lovely and the games outside for the kids, the bed was very comfy and it was spotlessly clean

Disliked: Only thing was no phone signal or WiFi, so had no TV and with an autistic boy with me I found that a bit hard, but apart from that the place was lovely

Local attractions

Options galore await if you’ve come this way for a walk. The big name nearby is Offa’s Dyke Path, which wends its way along the 177-mile England/Wales border and the course of the eighth-century Offa’s Dyke. Warm up for your longer walks on little local paths, including the 10-minute trot to the ruined Longtown Castle. Hikes aren’t the only way to get a bit of alfresco activity around here: a 10-minute drive gets you to a downhill mountain bike course, paintballing centre, laser clay pigeon shooting or llama trekking (yes) outfit, and within half an hour there’s pony trekking, golf, and canoe or kayak trips from Hay-on-Wye. Hay-on-Wye (half an hour’s drive) is worth a trip even if you’re not venturing out on the river, as the town’s stacked with bookshops of all stripes: kids’ books, antique books, poetry books, natural history books, crime fiction books – you’ll find a specialist supplier for all these in the town. If it’s foodie shops that get you going, head south to Abergavenny (20 minutes) instead – the independent shops here are full of tasty things to eat (and drink, of course).
