  • Peaceful modern yurts in a scenic Herefordshire two-acre meadow
  • Hay-on-Wye 10 minutes' drive away; half an hour to Hereford
  • Private deck area, firepit and barbecue for each yurt; dogs welcome
Hankering after a Hay-on-Wye break? Head a little way across the English border into Herefordshire to Heart of the Wye for a glamping stay surrounded by gorgeous countryside, but still with easy access to the town when you want it. This peaceful location is just under 10 minutes’ drive from Hay-on-Wye in an elevated position that rewards guests with fabulous views over the green fields all around (lovely at any time but particularly excellent at sunset). Families, small groups of friends, couples and solo travellers are all equally welcome here – and as four-legged companions are likely to appreciate this setting too, you can bring dogs as well. Accommodation here is in modern yurts carefully located around a sloping two-acre meadow to give each one its own private space – each one has its own deck, firepit, barbecue and canvas-covered picnic bench. Inside they’re individually styled to reflect the natural surroundings and have been provided with a comfy double bed (made up ready for your arrival); two additional single beds can be added if needed. The shared facilities have been nicely thought out too, including eco-friendly waterless toilets, hot showers and a well-equipped kitchen shed that’s also got space for relaxed dining. The smallholding also hosts ‘Off Grid Gourmet’ supper clubs at the weekend, so you might like to sign up for one of their feasts before you arrive. For other meals, there are plenty of cafés, pubs and places to eat in Hay-on-Wye (as well as all the famed bookshops of course).

Local attractions

Hay-on-Wye (10 minutes’ drive) really bursts into life during the world-famous literary festival in early summer, but it’s a wonderful place to visit at any time of year, with lots of indie bookshops and galleries, a castle and a gin distillery. The area around Hay is also popular with walkers, who come here to walk the nearby Wye Valley Walk, climb Hay Bluff (20 minutes) or wander further into the northern parts of the Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons) National Park. From the glampsite you can also head to the Wye for wild swimming, paddleboarding and canoeing, or take a half-hour walk to Artistraw Cider for a tour and tasting. For a change of scenery, head to Hereford (half an hour) for a dip into urban life – the city’s cathedral, Black and White House Museum and Museum of Cider are favourite things to visit. En route to Hereford, the National Trust’s Weir Garden (25 minutes) is also a great place to visit.
