  • Motorhome site adjacent to Lydney Harbour in the Forest of Dean
  • A 20-minute drive to the Wye Valley, and 25 minutes to Gloucester
  • Basic site with canalside pitches; pubs, shops and boats nearby
One for lovers of all things nautical, Marina Base Camp is a simple motorhome site adjacent to Lydney Docks in Gloucestershire’s Forest of Dean. It’s located in Lydney’s working marina, and pitches all have peaceful views over the canal, where you mght get to see ducks, swans and kingfishers. Directly behind the campsite is the River Severn and the Bristol Channel estuary, lined with public footpaths with clear views of the stately Severn bridges. You can also have a potter around Lydney Harbour, where boats are moored up waiting to pass through the sea lock, or follow trails directly from the site, leading through the Forest of Dean on foot or on two wheels. If you need to replenish supplies, there’s a supermarket in Lydney. For a change of scenery, there’s a café down by the harbour, and a couple of teashops and local pubs in the town itself, with a bigger choice in Cinderford (20 minutes’ drive), where you can often find live music in the evenings too. A speedy train service from Lydney station (five minutes’ walk) gives you fast and direct connections to Cardiff and Newport in Wales, Gloucester with its Georgian docks, and the spa town of Cheltenham if you fancy a fly trip further afield.

Electric optional motorhome pitch

Liked: Very basic site just what you need when you want to get away and see the stars. Nice easy walk to lydney harbour, very friendly owners. Waste disposal, nice toilet and very pretty view with the water and wildlife. Will definitely stay again if they'll have me.

Disliked: Nothing to dislike, its a basic site.... probably explains the name basecamp!

Electric optional motorhome pitch

Liked: Nothing

Disliked: We did not stay. Drove in and drove straight back out. Not a campsite, it’s an industrial car park with fake grass which is turning black laid down. Really nothing good about it. It felt creepy and there is no way we could’ve stayed there. No refund offered which is annoying. Waste of £16. Did not interact with owner so can’t comment on customer service or WiFi as it’s so awful we were there less than 10 minutes.

Local attractions

Find out more about the local area by jumping on the heritage steam train at Norchard Station (10 minutes’ drive) for a chug through the Forest of Dean, and then having a potter around the reconstructed cottages and workshops at the riverside Dean Heritage Centre (15 minutes). You can also follow the Forest of Dean Sculpture Trail (20 minutes) to spot multicoloured glass sculptures among the trees. Access the forest itself directly from the site, and if you’re mad-keen on walking and cycling, the Wye Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (20 minutes) offers you routes to Tintern Abbey (25 minutes), as well as canoeing and canyoning adventures on the river for the more intrepid among you. You can also use Lydney as a base to explore ancient Welsh castles: the landmark Chepstow Castle (15 minutes) offers spectacular views over the River Severn, while Norman-era Caldicot Castle has acres of landscaped grounds to discover, and Raglan (45 minutes) has an informative visitor centre.
