  • Luxury renovated double railway carriage on a small sheep farm
  • In the Wye Valley and a short drive from Forest of Dean attractions
  • Barbecue, picnic table and covered bicycle storage outside the unit
Keen to go cycling in the Forest of Dean or canoeing in the Wye Valley (or indeed both)? You’ll be in pole position at Hoarthorns Hideaway on the edge of the Wye Valley National Landscape. This is a top spot to consider if you prefer glamping to camping and you’re also keen to prepare your own food. Hoarthorns Hideaway is a luxurious renovated double railway carriage on a small working sheep farm near the Forest of Dean and surrounded by peaceful countryside. There are no noisy roosters around though – just the sheep, ducks, chickens and the family’s two border collies and cat. Through the hedge, there's a view towards cows and calves in the neighbouring field too. Inside the carriage, the open-plan living space has a Smart TV, a cosy dining area and a kitchen with a cooker, hob, microwave, fridge, kettle and toaster so you can sort your self-catering. A comfortable double bedroom and an ensuite shower room with a shower, toilet, heated towel rail and sink make up the rest of the indoor space. For alfresco meals, create a spread on the picnic bench or set up a barbecue on the electric grill. The enclosed paddock provides plenty of privacy, and there’s also an undercover area for storing bicycles (just bring your own lock). Location-wise, the site is in a small hamlet called Edge End, which is five minutes’ drive away from Coleford’s shops. Symonds Yat is a 20-minute drive away and the main part of the Forest of Dean (including the cycle centre) is a five-minute drive away. What might be on your to-do list in this part of the world? Walking, cycling, rock climbing, canoeing, golfing and fishing are all excellent options. Wildlife-watching, too – keep an eye out for wild boar, squirrels, deer and birds like Canadian geese.

1 bedroom shepherd's hut

Liked: I stayed here with my sister for two nights. We hiked locally and we shared the good size double bed. It was an idyllic rural retreat close to local walks in the Forest of Dean. We were made to feel welcome. The accommodation was private, in its own area of land with parking for two vehicles. It felt safe, secure, private and peaceful. We were self-catering and shared the food preparation. There was a choice to eat inside or outside, with excellent rural views.

The kitchen and dining area were equally set up for cooking from scratch if you wanted to, or heating up ready meals. The fridge/freezer was an adequate size for two people on a weekend stay. There were also ample recycling bins in a closed container near the parking area.

The whole place felt surprisingly spacious for easy living. Everything had been carefully thought out before we arrived, with heating and hot water ready. The view from the double french doors was inspiring, particularly at sunset. The WiFi signal was strong and there were two TVs (bedroom and living area).

Liked: Well appointed, unusual accommodation complete with all the standard facilities in a peaceful location.
Welcoming host who met us and showed us around the property. Left eggs (from her hens) and a pint of milk.

Local attractions

Those who like to pack your holidays full of activities have plenty of choices here. If you prefer to stay above ground, you can try the walking and cycling trails in the Forest of Dean. For cyclists without their own wheels, the Forest of Dean Cycle Centre (five minutes) is the place to go. Walkers may like to start out by touring the Forest of Dean Sculpture Trail (10 minutes). Some other splendid spots are the mossy woodland at Puzzlewood (10 minutes), the forest-based Perrygrove Railway Adventure (10 minutes) and the historic Tintern Abbey (half an hour). Raglan (half an hour), Monmouth (45 minutes) and Chepstow (half an hour) all have historic castles.
