  • Spacious site on a farm 20 minutes’ drive from the Peak District
  • Chesterfield 20 minutes’ drive; Chatsworth House 25 minutes
  • Dogs welcome; within walking distance of two pubs
In the grounds of a listed farmhouse in the countryside between Chesterfield (20 minutes’ drive) and Sheffield (half an hour), Moor Top Farm is a 13-acre family-friendly site in a peaceful rural area. It is also only 20 minutes’ drive from the edge of Peak District National Park – and you know what that means: bagloads of potential for walking and cycling holidays or chilled-out country breaks. The farm, which is on the edge of the village of Apperknowle (a 15-minute walk), has two excellent pubs within walking distance (the nearest is just over a quarter of a mile from the site); other facilities, such as takeaways, convenience stores and small supermarkets, can be reached within a five-minute drive. There’s lots of room here for families to unpack all their gear and get up to outdoor activities – whether barbecuing dinner or building a campfire; and well-behaved dogs are very much welcome at Moor Top Farm. If you fancy stepping out for a walk (with or without your four-legged friend), just head west for a couple of miles and you’ll come to the Unstone Line, a flat former railway route with sections that run along the pretty River Drone. The facilities on site include a toilet and a cold-water tap.

Local attractions

Visit the tap room at Drone Valley Brewery (five minutes’ drive) to sample the home-made offerings and support this community-led business. The volunteers who run it also organise monthly music sessions under a heated marquee, and your dog is welcome, too. On the eastern fringes of Peak District National Park, Chatsworth House (25 minutes) has far-reaching views over the River Derwent and the hills beyond. The mansion’s opulent interiors include the Painted Hall, with gilded walkways and balconies, and the Oak Room, with ornate wooden panels and spiral columns. The expansive grounds were largely designed by 18th-century landscape gardener Capability Brown. Built over the course of several centuries, Sheffield Cathedral also includes elements added as recently as the 1990s, such as the stained glass of the spiky, angular Lantern Tower. Stock up on picnic essentials at the Moor Market, then head to one of the city’s green areas, such as Weston Park or Devonshire Green.
