  • Peaceful Peak District site two miles from Bamford Edge
  • A 10-minute drive to caverns; 25 minutes from Bakewell and Chatsworth
  • Children’s playground opposite; the Thornhill Trail and pub close by
Pretty is what you get at Hope Valley Campsite in the Peak District National Park. It’s pretty in the way of scenery… but also pretty darn peaceful, as the site rolls out over six acres and looks over a valley and the river Derwent. It’s also two miles from Bamford Edge (which, by the way, is half an hour’s walk away when you fancy an uphill hike above a reservoir). Surrounded by the national park’s slopes but flat around the site, things are quite simple here in the way of facilities. There’s a water supply and portable toilet, and opposite the site are a playground and some space to get some games going next to the river. There’s good access to the road when you’re ready to set off somewhere just as nice. When you’re going on foot, the Thornhill Trail might attract your attention. It starts near the site and leads the way to Ladybower Reservoir in around 40 minutes. Pubs are pretty plentiful around this area too. You might like to stop off at the pub down in Bamford (it’s just a ten-minute walk away) or head into Castleton, where there are a larger handful of pubs 10 minutes’ drive away. Don’t worry about searching far and wide for food supplies, as there’s a farm shop and a small food shop five minutes’ drive away from the site too.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked Easily accessible. Nice friendly warden. Loads of space - I was miles away from the nearest tent. Nice and quiet on the field with the pleasant sound of water flowing. Water bowser and toilets.

Disliked Fairly close to a road and there were some noisy vehicles from time to time.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked My very favourite Peak district campsite.
Great value for lone travellers, fresh drinking water and clean loo's.
There's nothing else you need for a great weekend away,!
Being in Bamford, there are so many hikes you can do from the campsite.
Lovely pub in the village and great breakfast rolls at Bamford bakery.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked Nice grounds, beautiful views and quiet campsite.

Portaloos cleaned sufficiently, and fresh water available.

Playground for the kids just across the road.

Nice sounds of the river.

Disliked A fair bit of traffic noise. Not the fault of the campsite obviously, just situational.

Non-electric grass touring pitch

Liked The camping field was level and it was nice not to have regimented pitching. The location is beautiful and still I’m easy reach of the village and its amenities. Although only portaloos they were kept clean and the water supply was always available. We had our own shower facility so the fact that there are none on site did not affect us.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked arrived on the thursday and had the whole field to ourselves for the first night which was a lovely experience! great views and location. bamford edge and stanage edge is a great walk very close by and rock climbing at the adventure hub was a fun cheap activity nearby.

Disliked rang both numbers on the gate multiple times when we first arrived and no one answered.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked Great basic campsite , it has toilets , water and bins. Plenty of space and a lovely river nearby

Disliked Rules state - it’s a quiet campsite - no fires no music etc , a good few did which I didn't see as a massive problem But i also had a large family pitch up near us who drunk and made a load of noise until early hours waking you up and they managed to fall out with each other and packed up at 6am shouting and swearing. I would definitely stay again and hope there’s less idiots next time.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked Excellent location right in the heart of Hope Valley. It was lovely to see Stanage Edge from the campsite. It was great that there was wifi and water (it said this wasn't available on the website so this was a great surprise.) Debbie was friendly when she came around to say hi to us all. It was clean and well maintained. Good amount of space. We had a barbecue and brought our dog - no issues. Had a lovely stay. Thank you!

Disliked Nothing

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked The site is in a brilliant location and has pubs and shops all within walking distance. The field is really level which makes getting a good spot super easy.

Disliked Whilst it is advertised and I was fully aware, the porta loo’s aren’t ideal. There was four or five I think but these got really unpleasant to use due to how many people had to use them and whilst they remained relatively clean there was no hiding the smell. If this site investigated in better facilities it would be hard to knock it

From the manager: It’s great you enjoyed your stay
We advertise ourselves as exactly what we are a 60 day pop up site with simple facilities
We are farmers that open up the field for the public to come and enjoy the beautiful area
Thank you for the feed back but it’s impossible for us to add better facilities we would need planning g permission from the local authorities which is impossible to get and the cost to put mains water I. Would be astronomical and something we can’t do
The field goes back to been agricultural land for the rest of the year
You paid £20 for a night for two adults two children which I would say is reasonable these days £ 5 par person

Local attractions

An afternoon by the lido? It’s only a five minutes’ drive to reach such a place from Hope Valley Campsite. Add five to 10 minutes onto your journey time and you could be on an underground boat trip at Speedwell Cavern (10 minutes) or taking a tour around the slate, stalagmites and stalactites at Blue John Cavern (15 minutes). For a little stroll and some fur (or in the alpacas’ case, wool) therapy, Mayfield Alpacas Animal Park (15 minutes) may be your next stop – the animal park has skunks, meerkats and other creatures too. As for those staple activities associated with the Peak District, a cycle down the disused railway on the Monsal Trail (20 minutes) is nicely followed by a brew and Bakewell pudding along the riverbank and medieval bridge in Bakewell (25 minutes). There’s a stepping stones walk at Chee Dale (half an hour) or the huge grounds at Chatsworth House (25 minutes) when you’re in need of more wanderings (or time with the playgrounds and farmyard animals, in the case of the latter). Buxton (half an hour), a thermal spa town, is equal parts peaceful and historic, with a heritage trail you may want to follow instead.
