  • Quiet and comfy glamping on a Peak District farm
  • A 10-minute drive to Peak District National Park
  • Fishing lakes and local pubs a 15-minute walk away
Head to High Ashes Haven for a sniff of history: this site is part of a farm dating back to 1640. The staff might have had rather more spartan berths back then, but in the comfy digs here you'll feel just as close to nature (the farm's pet sheep may wander by, but you won't have to do any tending these days, just wave hi as they amble past). The units here are warm and brightly decorated spaces with a cosy bed, with linen, towels and a goose feather and down duvet all provided. Right next door is a bathroom with hot shower, toilet and sink. For eats, cook up a feast in the well-equipped kitchen area or sling a pizza into the woodfired oven. Logs are supplied for the firepit too so you can toast yourselves as you dine alfresco: peak relaxation. It's thirsty work of course, all that gazing at the scenery… Handily, the hostelries of Ashover dish up local ales (and home-cooked dinners should you tire of prepping meals), a 15-minute walk or a five-minute drive away. And if that local scenery looks a tad familiar to film buffs? That may well be because the area's used as the location for 2019 hit movie Mary Queen of Scots.

Haven bell tent

Liked: Amazing place, can’t fault it. Phil and Ness have thought of everything and are so friendly and accommodating. Tent was beautiful and cosy in the wet weather, outdoors chilling areas were gorgeous in the sun. Kitchen fully equipped and with bbq and pizza oven! We loved the ducks and the views the most. Will be back as soon as possible!

Haven bell tent

Liked: We have just returned from a 2 night stay in the Haven bell tent. The area is beautiful, even though we are fairly local, we had yet to explore this area of Derbyshire. There are walks from the farm.
The tent was so cosy and comfy, the kitchen had everything we needed and the site was spacious and well maintained. I loved the shower room, really well designed with unusual finishing touches.
Phil was so helpful and was a pleasure to chat with.

Disliked: Could possibly do with fencing off the individual camping areas so other families don't keep interrupting you (imagine this isn't usually an issue but the odd one-off)

Serenity bell tent

Liked: Phil and the owners were extremely kind and hospitable.
From extra wood for the fire to a full assortment of cooking dishes, they provided us with more than expected amenities and we relished our time at the High Ashes Haven. The campsite itself was beautiful, just the perfect setting to detach from the usual city atmosphere.

Haven bell tent

Liked: We had a a great time at High Ashes Farm. We went as two families and stayed in the bell tents. These were so well equipped, with literally everything you need..even a radio!

The site itself is basic but that's what we wanted. There is a separate shower room and toilet and a duck pond. There are a couple of swings, a dart board, swing shot set and a basketball net, so plenty to keep the kids entertained too...as well as running wild in the fields.

The host was very nice and present if we needed anything.
The setting is beautiful and we have already recommended it to people.

Thanks for a lovely stay.

Serenity bell tent

Liked: What a brilliant place! Stayed with with the family and we had a blast. We stayed in the tent and it was very well kitted and and supplied. The only thing we needed to bring was food and firewood. Everything else - gas BBQ, wood fired pizza oven, microwave, kettle, bedding, tables and chairs, fire pit - ws all provided. Phil was the consummate host and very generous, a top guy! The kids fed the pigs, sheed, chickens and animals and had a gold old device-free weekend of fun in the sun. Toasting marshmallows round the campfire and making pizzas was a highlight. The heater in the tent kept us warm and dry and the fact that there was an additional large tent for the kids to make dens in was great. Will definitely be back!

Local attractions

You can join up with the 34-mile Chesterfield Round Walk right from the site for a circular tour of southern Peaks countryside (it's split into sections with parking and bus links if you want to take it easy). A 10-minute drive takes you to the Peak District National Park, crisscrossed with walking and cycling trails for all levels of fitness or heroism. Even if you only make it down to Ashover for a pie and a pint, you'll see some classic countryside, so bring your camera along wherever you roam. Fishing enthusiasts can follow the stream out of the farm for a mile to Press Manor Lakes, where there's coarse and fly fishing for trout and carp as well as fishing lessons for those who want to hone their angling technique. Family days out nearby include Gulliver's Kingdom (15 minutes' drive), a dinosaur-studded theme park with log flumes and courage-testing rollercoasters. It's also worth taking the cable car from Matlock up to the Heights of Abraham, a hilltop park where you can venture into massive underground caverns or climb and swing in adventure playgrounds. Within a half-hour drive, you can see how the other half lives (or lived) at the historic estates of Chatsworth, Haddon Hall and Bolsover Castle. If you fancy galloping across the hills like country squires meanwhile, there's horse riding and pony trekking at Matlock Farm Park (10 minutes from the site).
