  • Valley site a mile from the Peak District town of Buxton
  • Surrounded by woodland and with a gorge and viaduct at one end
  • Playground, games room, gas exchange and well-stocked shop
Travelling types, move Buxton to the top of your list. The Derbyshire spa town and gateway to the Peak District was once shortlisted as one of the top three most attractive places in the British Isles (Cork and Hastings were also acclaimed: move them to the top of your list as well). A mile from town and the closest site to Buxton is Lime Tree Holiday Park, in its own valley in a Special Landscaped Area, surrounded by farmland and with a wooded limestone gorge and old railway viaduct at one edge. (Maps, brochures and sheets of information on local attractions are at the Lime Tree reception, or ask one of the helpful staff for advice on things to see and do.) Facilities on site include an adventure playground; an indoor games room with pool table, kids’ corner and TV/DVDs; a well-stocked shop with local produce and an ice block freezing facility; gas cylinder exchange, and a microwave for heating babies’ or toddlers’ food. Among the amenities are a modern toilet block (in the centre of the field, no less), showers, a washing-up area and a launderette with ironing facilities.

Non-electric grass tent pitch (six person)

Liked: The staff were welcoming, the facilities were amazing, very clean and modern. We found a lovely spot to pitch our tent. It was a good hub to get to Buxton, Bakewell and Chatsworth House which was our main draw.

Disliked: The hill to drive up to the camping fields was a little uneven and bumpy and there were a few precarious rocks that I think our car may have scraped on.

Camping pod

Liked: An absolutely amazing stay. The camping pods were clean and had everything we needed for our 2 night stay. The wash blocks were spotless and staff very friendly. My two children can’t wait to return! Also an excellent location for exploring the Peak District. Thank you for a fantastic couple of days.

Non-electric grass tent pitch (two person)

Liked: Well kept grassy terraces for tent pitches, very clean shower/toilet block, hot water for washing up at the sinks. It was nice to have access to a picnic bench, there were several dotted about. Quite a peaceful site although with some background road noise, lots of birdsong morning & evening.

Disliked: Annoying radio 2 playing when you go into the toilet block, even in the dead of night. There was nowhere to plug in a phone charger or a fridge/freezer for campers.
No wifi

Non-electric grass tent pitch (six person)

Liked: Beautiful setting, lots of choice on where to pitch, some very secluded terrace areas, toilets warm with hot water and radio playing 24/7, EV charger which is easy to use and good value, will definitely stay again

Disliked: The main camping field is a slope but not terrible, not ideal.

Non-electric grass tent pitch (six person)

Liked: Great location close to Buxton. The toilet/washing facilities were very clean and modern. Lovely view of you can get a pitch at the top of the camping field.

Disliked: Camping field is on quite a slope!
Be prepared to roll away in your sleep.
Also the playground is next to the road in/off the site, not ideal for small kids.

Non-electric grass tent pitch (two person)

Liked: This site is a great location to do lots of beautiful walks and sightseeing. There are take aways and shops and cafes near by.

I stayed in the non-electric camping field which seemed to have a newly built shower block, I can't fault the cleanliness of this area. The site is peaceful and really well kept. Beautiful views of the railway bridge and surrounding fields full of cows.

I've not done much camping so I felt really safe here especially travelling alone.

Disliked: There were keypads on the toilet doors which felt a bit weird. When you're half asleep in the first morning and just need a wee it's annoying to have to go back to your tent and check the code. I've never known a site have this before. My friends were in a different field and the codes were different. Even from the normal loos to the children's changing area the codes were different so my friend had to remember two cldes. Also conflicting signs around the camp about dog fouling. One sign said there was CCTV and I'd be removed from site if my dog pooed. Another sign in a different field said clear up after your dog. I asked reception for clarification and it was sort of shrugged at, they doesn't matter if he pooped it was to keep static caravan owners happy, but also take him to the dog field and try not to let him poo at the same time. My dog ended up sitting in the car when I visited my friends in another field. On the last day I saw there were loads of dogs around that field so I let him sit outside with us. There are signs in the bathroom saying don't allow your dogs in the facilities. I travelled on my own so wasn't prepared to leave him outside or in the tent by himself. I wish it was made clear before I went there were some specific dog rules. It Didn't really feel like a dog friendly site. I took him in the shower block and he led on a towel on the seat whilst I showered, there wasn't a trace of him being there, which is more than I can say for some children who left grass everywhere one morning.

All the staff I spoke with were really friendly. Although I will say I got speaking to a camping neighbour and she was outraged because she watched two male staff enter two of the tents in our field when the occupants were out. I asked if they went into my tent she said no, it just feels really wrong and inappropriate to do that. She was going to speak to reception about it and I also was but I left the next day so there didn't seem much point.

The onsite shop is pretty basic and expensive. There is a farm shop also onsite which I didn't visit so there may be more in there.

I had a nice relaxed time and I would recommend staying here if you don't have a dog and put a padlock on your tent.

From the manager: Thank you for you review and glad your enjoyed your stay at Lime Tree. We want to assure you that none of our staff would enter a customer's tent without permission. In this instance a customer asked the staff to take their tent down and dispose of it as it was leaking. We respect privacy and take these matters seriously, thank you for your concern.

Local attractions

There’s quite a bit to immerse yourself in at the spa and market town of Buxton, one of the most popular destinations in the Peak District. Like Bath in the south, Buxton was founded as a spa town by Romans and became popular in Georgian times for the supposed health-giving properties of its spa water. Fill up your water bottle at St Anne's Well in front of the Crescent then go on a Buxton tour to see its Georgian architecture and smart landscapes including the award-winning ornamental gardens at the Pavilion, and the Buxton Opera House, the highest in the country. The Peak District as a whole is full of market towns stuffed with local produce and interesting attractions: go to Bakewell for the essential eponymous tart; Leek for Rudyard Lake and the steam train; Ashbourne for a couple of hundred listed buildings, and fellow spa town Matlock Bath. If you don’t mind travelling a bit further, Sheffield and Manchester can both be reached in an hour to an hour and a quarter. Also nearby is Castleton with Norman Peveril Castle and four show caves; if going underground is your thing, also check out the caves at Poole’s Cavern just outside Buxton. And there’s caving (and climbing) aplenty all around the Peak District National Park, along with stacks of outdoor pursuits like hot air ballooning, gliding, watersports and biking the Tissington and Manifold trails.
