  • Back to basics site on a peaceful family farm in the Peak District
  • Outdoor activity paradise; walks, climbs and cycle trails from site
  • Two pubs and a tearoom within walking distance of the site
From walking through the Deep Dale valley to pretending you’re on a film set in Chatsworth House, tear whichever piece of the Peak District you please from Wild Camping at Barkerfields Farm. This family-friendly back to basics site on a working farm is well-placed for concocting an action-packed plan in the national park. Leave the car behind if you wish, as the site is something of a walkers' paradise, with lots of footpaths and walking routes all around, plus climbs and cycle rides (with bike hire in the area too). What to do first? Sample a beer or two from the brewery in Thornbridge Hall (two and a half hours' walk)? The gorgeous loop towards Lathkill Dale’s waterfalls (half an hour's walk)? A dally along to the Deep Dale Nature Reserve (three hours and 20 minutes' walk) or the Magpie Mine (10 minutes’ walk) to learn about the industrial heritage? A Bakewell pudding in Bakewell (an hour and a half's walk)? If food is the first thing on your mind, there’s a restaurant near the waterfalls or two local pubs and a tearoom serving breakfast and ice cream in Monyash, 25 minutes’ walk away (that's not forgetting the supermarkets in Bakewell, which you can also drive to in five minutes). If you can't move that far, there are usually home-made cakes and snacks to purchase on site too. As the site is a working farm, there may be a few farm noises from time to time. Kites, drones and games in the sky are not allowed, but there’s plenty of space for fun in the peaceful, level-grounded field (cars are parked in a separate designated area for safety). As well as farm-themed activities on selected dates, there are basic facilities on site, including portable toilets (serviced several times per day) and clean running cold water (for drinking or washing your pots and pans).

Local attractions

If you feel like calling into the animal world, Peak Wildlife Park (half an hour's drive) has lemurs, penguins and wallabies. As you’d expect, there’s also plenty of wildlife around the national park and inside the National Trust’s Lyme Park (45 minutes). Down for some rock climbing? Hope Valley Garden Centre’s climbing wall (25 minutes) or The Foundry Climbing Centre (45 minutes) will help you get in some practice. For challenging outdoor walls, Hathersage (25 minutes) is a good spot. Meanwhile, for a traffic-free bike trail through tunnels and limestone valleys, make for the Monsal Trail (10 minutes). Down into the pits… Peak Cavern (35 minutes) has a natural amphitheatre, while Speedwell Cavern (half an hour) has a boat trip into the Bottomless Pit. The Treak Cliff Cavern (35 minutes) is home to the Blue John stone, while the Heights of Abraham (half an hour) has more caverns surrounded by woodlands and gorges (plus cable cars and a playground). And if the kids are looking for a thrill, Alton Towers (35 minutes) and Gulliver’s Kingdom (25 minutes) theme parks are both within easy reach.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Easy, no frills affair if you’re after a place to pitch up for a night or 2.
Not far from Bakewell.

Disliked: Could’ve done with a station to wash pots / pans if I was being overly critical

From the manager: Thank you for your review, we’re pleased you enjoyed your stay. We do provide a sink to wash pots etc, maybe you missed spotting it? It is cold water however but suitable for drinking too. Hope you’ll visit again next year.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Perfect off grid escape with beautiful views. Bags of space to pitch up. You can use your car to unload and then park a few 100m away or so. Having minimal cars made it perfect for my two young sons to crawl and run about without worry.

Facilities are basic (as advertised) but kept very clean. The owner popped round everyone early evening to offer firewood for sale if needed. We didn’t take this up as the kids were exhausted from the days fun and already in bed but lots of people did take up the offer and it was nice to see everyone with their little campfires.

Disliked: Nothing - just don’t expect phone signal or fancy facilities. This was a very peaceful off grid experience.

From the manager: We’re pleased you enjoyed your stay and like the feeling of the place. We do try to keep it basic as to keep the wild camping feel. We especially try to make it safe for children and pets to play as we are a family friendly campsite.
I’m pleased you found the facilities clean enough to comment on. We really do try to keep them clean and always stocked with loo roll.
Hope you’ll come again next year.

Disliked: Road to walk to village is unlit

From the manager: Thank you for taking the time to write a review. It’s a shame that’s you’ve marked us down for something we had no control over : The road.
The road is a country road which often means that they are unlit at night.
We are pleased you enjoyed the village once you got there though.

Great site, needs to be monitored for the quiet times etc.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Location is fantastic.

Disliked: Site isn't monitored. Person was camped right next to the bathrooms (portaloos) which isn't too private. (Should be a cordoned area to give privacy) Ended up next too two couples who were drinking and playing music until 00:20. Site boasts quiet times etc. Such a shame because it's a great location.

From the manager: Thank you Peter for taking the time to leave this rather interesting review. I must say I’ve never had one like it before!
As a wild campsite we allow people to pitch up wherever they choose, something which everyone likes about the site. Maybe you need to consider why someone would pitch up so close to the facilities? Maybe they had mobility issues etc.
You are correct about a no music policy and quiet times and always have our phone number on our confirmation booking info and around our site so people can contact us if there are any problems including noise. No one contacted us that evening including yourselves to tell us about the noise. If I’d have known about the noise I would have asked them to be quiet
We are a working farm so do say on our site info that we are sometimes not on site. I always check on the campsite several times throughout the day though between farming jobs and when we check the facilities and sell firewood. I always check around 10pm to 10.30pm to check for noise etc.
We’re pleased you enjoyed the location which boasts 360 degrees countryside views though.

Simple, wild and great.

Liked: By far the best camp I’ve been too yet. The owners are absolutely fantastic, kind and attentive to the guests. Fire wood is sold at £5 a bag and the money goes to their children. Genuinely loved this place and I’m 10000% going back. Signal is abit patchy however not sure it’s an issue if you’re wild camping

Disliked: No shower ( not really an issue to be honest)

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for taking the time to leave us such a fabulous review. We’re thrilled that you’re hoping to come back next year.
We don’t provide a shower as we try to give a camping in the wild feel. Hopefully see you next year.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: WOW! What an incredible site and location. Views in the morning and evening were stunning, such a well kept field too for 'wild camping' and a great location for traveling and enjoying the surrounding. And a short 20min walk to an incredible pub! Fantastic value for money.

Disliked: It's always a difficult one this, but toilets. Portaloos kept clean and well stocked with toilet paper by owners and they were doing all they could to keep them pleasant. But talks with the owners in they are trialling companies to empty them and they aren't quite yet in a routine to when this gets done. So for our 'start of the week' stay they were full and very smelly which is never pleasant. BUT I'm confident that once they get into a routine of being emptied this would be a 5star site. And as advertised as wild camping, tbf having toilets at all is a luxury!

From the manager: Hello again and thank you for your review. Thank you also for appreciating what we’re trying to achieve with our site. Regarding toilets (as we talked about when we met) we are trying a new company this year as we always like to try and support local, small and independent businesses. The portaloo company is supposed to empty them on a Thursday but during your stay they missed us until a couple of days later. This did mean that the toilets got a lot fuller than ever before. Having talked to the company I’m assured it won’t happen again! Infact they have already been emptied ready for this weekend 🙂
We hope you’ll come again next year, you may even see the Aurora.

Liked: The freedom to pitch up where there was space, for kids to run around and play. Ability to have a fire if wanted. Peace, quiet and fantastic views. Excellent walks too.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Easy to access just drive on and pitch up. Nice big field, loved being able to make a campfire. Close enough to pubs while still feeling remote.

Disliked: The only thing I disliked was how filthy the portable toilets were. Portable toilets are usually not pleasant but these were next level. Urine all over the seat, lid, base, sides and walls. Nobody came to actually wipe them down in the time we was there. They wasn't suitable for my 2 young children (6 & 3) to use. As a woman I'd have rather have gone in the field if it wasn't for privacy.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for taking the time to write a review. We’re pleased you liked the idea of being able to have a campfire, it is one of the things people comment on the most.
Regarding the toilets, the toilets are always cleaned twice a day (morning and night) and then during the day I’ll pop up to check on them again and top up the loo rolls etc. I can’t help if they get dirty after I’ve cleaned them but it’s usually not long before I’m back checking them again in between the farming jobs. Many many past guests have commented on how spotless the toilets are and some even say they’re the cleanest they’ve seen.
I’m sorry they weren’t up to your expectations.
