  • Luxury shepherd’s huts on a Peak District National Park sheep farm
  • Tissington Trail 10 minutes’ drive; Chatsworth House half an hour
  • Adults-only wildlife haven with exclusive-use shower rooms
Adults-only getaways are the name of the game at New Hanson Grange Holidays, a gorgeous glampsite on a Derbyshire Dales sheep farm in the Peak District National Park. Your delightfully romantic accommodation is in cosily decked out shepherd’s huts on the edge of a small woodland and surrounded by greenery for privacy. Just the right size for solo travellers or couples, they each have a double bed with a comfy mattress and pretty linens, a woodburning stove for cooler weather and all the basics you need for cooking simple meals (camping stove included). As the huts are designed on eco-friendly lines, they have no electricity but they do have battery-operated lights. Outside each one is seating around a firepit to cuddle up around as you get supper going on the barbecue – or you might simply prefer to laze on your verandah, watch the sun set, listen to the birdsong and keep watch for hares, foxes, hedgehogs, owls, buzzards and pheasants on their evening walkabouts. Exclusive-use showers and loos are a few steps away in the Old Dairy, where there’s a washing-up sink, shared fridge and power points for charging phones. Although you’ll need to fend for yourselves food-wise most of the time (Ashbourne shops are 10 minutes’ drive away), your hosts can deliver breakfast hampers (for an extra charge) right to your door; just the job to set you up for hiking in spectacular Dovedale.

Local attractions

You’re staying in the Peak District National Park, where walking opportunities abound. Footpaths radiate out in all directions from the farm, whether you’re after a short stroll in Dovedale or hoping to yomp sections of the Tissington Trail (10 minutes’ drive) or the Manifold Way (15 minutes), which is also open to cyclists. If you need a rest from all that hiking and biking, tour subterranean caves and fossil displays at the Heights of Abraham (half an hour), reached by cable-car ride, or see crystals and limestone formations gleaming on guided tours of the Blue John Cavern (40 minutes). There’s plenty of culture to be had in these parts too; have a snoop around elegant Chatsworth House (half an hour) or Tudor-era Haddon Hall (20 minutes) with its gorgeous Elizabethan-style gardens. You can learn about the once-infamous (and now jolly pretty) plague village of Eyam at its namesake museum (35 minutes), and have a potter around the visitor centre and ruins at Peveril Castle (45 minutes), built by King Henry II in 1176.

Fern 1 bedroom shepherd's hut (no pets)

Liked: Peaceful area, beautiful clean hut and facilities were clean and well maintained. They had had thought of everything you could possibly need including games like drafts which I have not played in years so was fun for us to play again.

Disliked: Only issue for me was that I was unable to use my CPAP machine due to no electricity in the hut. However that is on me not the site as I hadn’t realised it had no electricity when I booked although it is clearly stated, I hadn’t read it properly. Will just have to get a battery pack for it when we come back
