  • Peaceful park near the Peak District
  • Easy access to Derby and Nottingham; two pubs five minutes' walk away
  • New toilet and shower block kept to immaculate standards
What a peaceful park this is for Peak District hols – on 11 acres of quiet woodland near the national park and set deep in the Derbyshire countryside with picnic areas peppered all around. And what a pleasing park this is for those who insist on amenities being immaculate and up to date – the toilet and shower block comes with disabled access, baby changing and showers with hot and cold water, and is kept in tiptop condition at all times by the friendly site team. Riddings Wood Holiday Park is a rural park but with easy access to urban centres like Derby and Nottingham as well as to the hikes, bike rides and canters of the Peak District. (If you're a bit bamboozled as to what to do first, have a look at the tourist info point in reception or ask the team for tips.) Campfires are allowed if you need a bit of warming upon return. And finally, what a pint-friendly site Riddings Wood is too – the only thatched-roof pub in Derbyshire, Moulders Arms (aka The Thack), is a short stroll away; and the Seven Stars, a community pub, is just across the road. Cheers…

What customers say

Friendly staff and clean facilities are frequently praised at this well-maintained campsite. Visitors enjoy the woodland setting, play area for children, and nearby pubs. However, some reviews mention issues with sloping pitches, mud, inadequate facilities during busy periods, and a need for general site maintenance. Despite some drawbacks, many guests found it good value and would return.

Electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Lovely clean site, has a nice play area that the kids seemed to all love. Nice woods alongside to walk the dog. Clean toilets with warm showers. Ice creams at reception to buy was a nice treat. Friendly guy on arrival joked about and engaged with people on site alot.

Disliked A bit of confusion on arrival with pitch size etc and saying no gazebo booked but sorted for us and we had a lovely pitch (maybe some teething issues with pitch up?)
In time a second toilet block, or even changing the middle cabin/waste unit to the main toilet blocks would be good 👍

Electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked We had a pitch on the bottom field right near the park. This was perfect for the kids and got lots of children playing games and having fun. Toilets/showers are clean and well kept. Friendly helpful staff. Ice creams and few drinks in the office.

Disliked Long walk up hill to the toilet from the bottom field which is where the kids park is
Pot washing is also near the toilet so you get your steps in! It’s a mix of disliked first thing in the morning or middle of the night but no issue in the day!

Shame somebody wasn’t picking their dog poo up in the bottom field!!

Electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Good levels of security with CCTV across the site, fences around the majority of the site, but there was a gap in the fencing in the bottom of the tent (non electric pitches) and electronic barriers in and out.
The shop sells reasonably priced ice creams, fire lighters and logs etc but nothing camping related (pegs, ropes etc).
The new and only toilet block, located next to the site office, is of good size; with 4 cubicles, and 4 showers plus 3 sinks inside and 3 big sinks outside for pot washing. The site is clearly marked with a 5MPH, 1 way system and there is ample parking for visitors too. There is a children’s park with barking chippings and ample grass space around it.

Disliked The toilet blocks appear to get cleaned once a day, as both I and my partner experienced no toilet roll or no soap in the toilets. Yet when they had been cleaned, they were immaculate inside. In the gents there was a massive puddle in the entrance, which I squeegeed in to the shower drain, but had been well trampled in before I went to use the toilet.
Whilst there are two areas which have a total of 7 big industrial bins, there was litter across the site that wasn’t collected over a 3 day period (ice cream wrappers, empty cans, crisp packets). Even though the warden does walk the site with his dog, it was a shame that this wasn’t ever picked up. Our pitch also had rubbish left on it from the previous guests, but given the 30min change over window I suppose the wardens might not be able to check all vacated pitches, and this is more lack of respect of those leaving. The pitches, except for handstanding are on quite a slope, so be prepared to adjust your usual sleeping configuration. The park has quite a lot of graffiti and damage, that if repaired would improve the safety of children using it.
There was also a “rubbish pile” that has a large burnt tree and then a pile of broken bricks, and broken pottery. This was approximately 60m away from the children’s park and wasn’t fenced off; it had some ticker tape on 3 sides but this didn’t prevent access and could have caused an injury should children inadvertently access it.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Friendly staff, reception and barrier, easy to find. Good bathroom and shower facilities and little park for the kids.

Disliked As a family site could get a little noisy but did settle down at night. A little walk to the toilet and shower block from the lower camping field but nothing major.

Electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Good showers and toilets, plenty of loo roll! Plenty of hot water
Friendly and helpful staff.
About 20 minutes from Matlock and Cromford
Lower field looked really nice and open, play area is down there but appears to be all non electric pitches
Barrier security and cctv

Disliked Middle section feels cramped when full Needs a freezer for ice blocks
Toilets/showers could do with cleaning more often- mop available but always sat in filthy water - maybe more signs asking people to clean up after themselves!
No recycling points!

Fully-serviced hardstanding touring pitch

Liked We recently stayed at Riddings Wood Holiday Park and had the most fantastic first-time caravan experience. From the moment we arrived, we were made to feel so welcome by Liz and Gary, the park managers. Our jockey wheel was broken when we got there, but Gary kindly helped us park our caravan (“Peggy”) using a block – such a lifesaver!

We stayed on Pitch One, which had a stunning view of the woodland. The whole site has a really lovely, relaxed atmosphere and is perfect for families. Our kids spent most of their time making new friends at the park, giving us some time to relax and enjoy the peaceful surroundings.

The toilet and shower blocks were spotless throughout our stay, and the washing-up area was really handy. We also noticed that there are lodges with hot tubs available to rent, which looked ideal if you’re after a bit of extra comfort.

The on-site reception/shop is a great bonus too – they stock a nice variety of ice creams, cold drinks, logs, and even dog treats, which was such a thoughtful touch for pet owners.

Honestly, this was the perfect introduction to caravan camping. Friendly staff, clean facilities, great amenities, and a beautiful setting. We’ll definitely be back again soon.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked The campsite was lovely and facilities were clean, the staff were welcoming informative and helpful and it was good value for money. There is a good play area for children and plenty of space for the children to run around.

Disliked A couple of grumbles would be that the toilet blocks were very far away from the non electric campsite which isn’t great for anyone with mobility issues, also the waste disposal area was very smelly which could maybe benefit from being a bit more closed in.

From the manager: Thank you for taking the time to review your stay with us we appreciate all feedback.

We are glad you enjoyed your stay with but sorry you wont be returning.

The toilets are far from the none electric field but please feel reassured those with mobility problems are offered alternative pitches nearer to facilities and thank you for letting us know about the waste we will look into this.

Local attractions

To the Peak! The Peak District National Park is but a short drive from Riddings Wood Holiday Park, and has a bit of what you fancy for all ages and inclinations. If you're in the area to hike, there are more Peak District trails than you can shake a (walking) stick at, from the shorter treks of seven or so miles around the upper Dove Valley and Pilsbury Castle, to long-distance paths like the Limestone Way (46 miles), the Derwent Valley Heritage Way (55 miles) or the Peak District parts of the Pennine Way, running for 268 miles from the northern Peak District to just inside the Scottish border. Climbers and cavers also delve into all things Peak: thousands of routes for all abilities are all over the park for climbers, including Burcen Edge for beginners and more hair-raising ascents like Debauchery and Mad Dogs and Englishmen for the severely experienced. If you're of a cavernous disposition, make your way to the village of Castleton and its four show caves, Blue John, the Peak, Treak Cliff and Speedwell Cavern with underground boat trip. Matlock Bath has a cable car to take adventurers to limestone caverns The Heights of Abraham, and Poole's Cavern near Buxton has vast caves to explore before an above-surface walk around Buxton Country Park. Other attractions like Chatsworth House and Gardens and the old Crich Tramway are to hand for the historically-minded, alongside old Peak District villages and market towns for tearooms, restaurants, family pubs and lots of shopping: try Buxton, Ashbourne and Bakewell to start you off. Back at Matlock Bath, let the kids go large at the rides and attractions of theme and play park Gullivers Kingdom for ages two to 13; the 600-acre Matlock Farm Park nearby should keep them busy for a bit too.
