If you are looking for a ‘down on the farm’ experience – and a romantic one with some luxuries and rather special views thrown in too – well, you’ll find all that in spades at Weatherhead Farm Accommodation. Five minutes’ drive from the rural village of Leckhampstead in Buckinghamshire, your cosy berth for two is in a hand-crafted shepherd’s hut with spectacular views over fields from its private garden. Yes, you’ll have grazing cattle, sheep and horses for neighbours, and a backdrop of birdsong to accompany you as you have a wander around the fields and along the brook – keeping an eye open for red kites and pheasants as you go. And if you’re visiting in spring, you might get to see some lambing action, with newborn lambs jumping round in the neighbouring field. And what can you expect inside your shepherd’s hut? A bespoke, fully fitted oak kitchen (tea, Nespresso pods and milk provided) and a living area with an oak table for working or dining, plus a comfy double bed, a separate ensuite with a shower, and hanging space for all your gear. And outside, there’s seating on your private lawn – what a spot that is for enjoying a glass of wine and watching the livestock grazing. On cooler days, cosy up around the firepit and spark up the grill (buy stuff for the barbecue in Buckingham, 10 minutes’ drive). If you choose to linger outside after dark, chances are you may get to hear owls hooting in the distance.

Local attractions

Stay close to your cosy shepherd’s hut with a ramble along quiet country lanes, or have a wander around National Trust - Stowe (15 minutes’ drive) to see follies and temples scattered among landscaped gardens – pack a picnic to make the most of this pretty spot. There’s another fine garden to explore at Waddesdon Manor (40 minutes), with the added bonus of portraits by Gainsborough and Reynolds on display in the French-château-style main house. For sporting days out, book a round of golf (a couple of courses are within 10 minutes), and practise your parallel turns on the artificial slopes at Snozone. Prefer to watch someone (or something) else doing the hard work? Have a flutter on the greyhounds at Towcester Racecourse, or head to Silverstone Circuit (all 20 minutes) for the annual British Grand Prix in July and summer gigs by big-name bands. Keen to pick up a bargain or two? The discounted designer shops of Bicester Village (35 minutes) are for you. And if you’re more interested in fauna than fashion, then take a self-drive safari around Woburn Safari Park (half an hour) to see big cats, rhinos and wolves.
